The BJP dashed the hopes of former Union minister Daggubati Purandeswari on
Wednesday, giving her the Rajampet Lok Sabha seat, as against the Visakhapatnam seat that
she was aspiring for.
Straight from Vizag, she has been displaced to YSR district’s Rajampet by her new party
BJP. Ironically, neither BJP nor TDP have any base in Rajampet. Rumor in political circles
is that Purandareswari has been given a seat where she has scant chances of success. She has
already changed two constituencies – Bapatla in 2004 and Vizag in 2009. So, she has been
shunted to Rajampet this time.
Although the BJP was keen to field her either from Vijayawada or Ongole Lok Sabha seat,
its electoral alliance partner Telugu Desam did not oblige and the party finally opted for
2. Rajampet seat. She would be facing her former Congress colleague Sai Pratap, a six-time
winner from Rajampet who was re nominated by the Congress after he rejoined the party.
She also facing stir competition form Mr Mithun Reddy, son of former P. Ramachandra
Reddy, of the YSRC.By expressing her views on party decision Ms Purandeswari said, “I
will take it as a challenge and prove myself.”
Sources close to Ms Purandeswari say that she felt seriously let down as the state BJP
leadership did not insist on more Lok Sabha constituencies, knowing fully well the
machinations of Mr Naidu, who was bent upon snubbing her politically.
A key leader who participated in the seat-sharing talks on behalf of the Telugu Desam said,
“They (BJP) asked us for Visakhapatnam, we did not object to it and gave it to them. It is for
the BJP leadership to decide their candidature, not us.”
