Mumbai Coastal Road information
The Mumbai government started the impressive Mumbai Coastal Road project in an effort
to greatly alleviate transportation-related problems like traffic and pollution. The 10.58
kilometre coastal route connects to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) at Worli and begins
at BD Somani Chowk, 280 metres before the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive. At the
moment, it takes more than 40 minutes to travel this distance. But once the planned project
is finished, the travel time will be roughly 12 minutes.
A stilted bridge, an elevated road, & twin tunnels that cut through the Malabar Hills are all
part of the project. Additionally, there will be open green spaces, a sea wall or breakwater,
and different crossroads to divert traffic. Additionally, an eight-lane sea-recovered road is
included. Trees will be planted along the path as part of the landscaping, and seating areas
2. for tourists and visitors will be constructed. Additionally, there will be the construction of
bike lanes, open theatres, parks, playgrounds, and public restrooms.
The longer Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which aims to link Marine Drive and Kandivali,
includes the 10.58 kilometre section. A toll-free motorway connecting South & North
Mumbai would be built as part of this master plan, easing traffic in one of the world's most
crowded cities. The entire motorway will be about 26 km long and have three 16 km-long
interchanges.
The BMC intends to expand the city after phase one is finished with an 8.5 km long and 20
m wide sea promenade. Priyadarshini Park at Napean Sea Road and the Worli side of the
Bandra Worli Sea Link will be connected by this spacious walkway. Phase 1 aims to speed
up transport to and from South Mumbai, and Phase 2 links Bandra Sea Link to Kandivali
Junction.
Mumbai Coastal Road Ran Into Serious Resistance
Construction on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) got underway in October 2018.
But encountered fierce opposition from the Koliwada community of fishermen,
conservationists, and locals. Environmental campaigners questioned the project's
environmental impact. The local fishing community was concerned about how the project
might affect their way of life. The villagers worried that they wouldn't be able to see the
ocean anymore.
The construction work was halted in April 2019 by the Bombay High Court following the
receipt of numerous petitions. In May 2019, the Supreme Court eventually gave BMC
permission to proceed with the project.
The proposed project requires 111 hectares in total from the sea, according to the BMC. Of
the overall amount of land, about 70 hectares will be used for recreation. No commercial
work would be permitted in this area of the site, according to the BMC.
Details of Mumbai Coastal Road
Twin tunnels with a 12 metre width would be built as a part of the project's initial phase.
The Girgaum Chowpatty tunnel will be 25 metres deep, but the Malabar Hill tunnel will be
75 metres deep. Marine Drive & Priyadarshini Park in South Mumbai will be connected by
these two tunnels. Priyadarshi Park and Chhoti Chowpatty on Marine Drive, which is close
to the well-known Chowpatty beach in Girgaum, are separated by 2.07 kilometres.
3. Seven destinations will be connected by the tunnels, four of which will be for automobiles.
Additionally, these tunnels will include automatic emergency control centres. For the first
time, 176 single pillars with a single column extending from bottom to top will be built
using Monopille technology.
Phase 1 is expected to cost Rs 12,700 crore.

located in Worli. This freeway will be about 26 kilometres long overall. As part of the
project, two subterranean tunnels will also be constructed at Malabar Hill & Girgaum
Chowpatty.

Coastal Road in Mumbai in a Nutshell
The 10.58 km Mumbai Coastal Road project would improve vehicle circulation between the
motorway and the local roads and offer much-needed relief from the heavy traffic. In
addition to generating 70 hectares of new green space, the initiative will reduce pollution
in the city.
Investors think the project, which spans several important residential centres, has the
potential to enhance the city's real estate market. In addition to enhancing transportation
options, this will boost demand for housing in the surrounding areas.
