This document provides a summary of settled land claims data in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It finds that the average time to settle a claim was 9 years, with ranges from 6 to 15 years depending on the district. The majority of settled claims were cash settlements for urban residential land. Challenges in analyzing the data included misclassified files, missing reference numbers, difficulties cooperating with project officers, and limited communication channels. The document recommends addressing these issues to improve analysis of land claims outcomes in the province.

Land base system

Electronic Data Management (EMD)
Scanned files
Used for Unsettled Claims
Challenges with EDM:
Not all the settled claims are available in the system.
Not all the necessary information needed is available in some instances Research Assistants would find a claim
with only valuation report or validation report no Gazette form nor Section 42D in some cases project name are
available but are un-accessible.
Missing documents both electronically and in hardcopy files.
Repetition of information in some claims
