2. Gucci is an Italian luxury goods firm based in
Florence, capital of the Tuscany region of Italy. It is
dedicated to the design and manufacture of fashion
items such as clothing, shoes, jewelry, handbags,
watches and perfumes. Its leather goods stand out.
3. ORIGINS:
The beginning dates back to
1920, and takes us to
Florence, where a young man
named Guccio Gucci opened
his first store. This cocktail of
ingredients was the key to the
success of that small
Florentine store on Via della
Vigna Nuova, whose identity
was bags, tricolor belts and
his iconic moccasins.
With the arrival of the 1950s and an
economy in full recovery, the firm went
international, reaching New York and
Hollywood, where the jet set went crazy for
the Gucci symbol, a synonym of global
luxury.
4. Dawn Mello, director of a famous
New York department store, who
landed at the firm to get it afloat,
hired Tom Ford, unknown at the
time, who would become one of
the biggest revolutions in fashion.
With Ford at the helm, Gucci
opted for clothes with a strong
sexual character whose best
showcase to display them was
among the Hollywood hills. Ford
left Gucci in 2004 after the group
was acquired by the Pinault-
Printemps-Redoute company.
5. Gucci's third golden age came with
Frida Giannini, the brand's
accessories designer and later in
charge of the ready-to-wear line. After
a few years of faltering success,
Giannini left Gucci in 2014. At the
beginning of the next year, the
previously unknown Alessandro
Michele, born in Rome and trained at
Fendi but working for Gucci since
2002, is confirmed as the brand's
new creative director. Michele, under
his retro aesthetic, has achieved
unexpected success at the helm of
the Italian luxury brand.
