2. Napoleon Bonaparte
• Napoleon Bonaparte was the greatest military
leader in the history of France, but he was not
from France. Napoleon was born on the island of
Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea.
• He attended military school in France and
became a lieutenant shortly before the French
Revolution.
• The Revolution allowed him to advance in the
ranks.

3. Napoleon Takes Over
• In November of 1799, Napoleon carried out a
coup d’ `etat and took control of France.
(A coup d’ `etat is a sudden seizure of power)
• A new constitution was approved by a
plebiscite that gave Napoleon the powers of
a dictator.
( A plebiscite is a YES or NO vote by the people)
• Napoleon signed a concordant with the Pope
that restored Catholicism in France.
