Course Professor Date 2 Spirituality in the Healthcare Setting Question 1 Current Method of
Assessment I assess the spiritual needs of my patients using an acronym tool identified as
FICA.The FICA tool relies on four domains of spiritual evaluation. The domains are
identified as faiths or beliefs, importance and influences, community, and address. This tool
is patient-centered and is guided by how the patient selects to disclose his spiritual needs.
The spiritual assessment questions are structured in a way that they are non-judgmental or
bias. Time is a key aspect considered when using this assessment tool since it lays the
foundation for spiritual assistance and reflection. How well the patient will respond to my
open-ended questions depend on our relationship. Response to Assessment My patients
respond to the assessment positively, especially after I have formed a strong bond with
them. In most cases, they reveal their physical challenges such as limited sleep, nausea, pain,
and many others. Besides, some even reveal their emotional problems such as nervousness
and fear. As the discussion prolongs via a holistic dimension, I bring up spiritual issues that
the patients further respond to positively. For instance, they reveal that the community
plays a pivotal role in strengthening their spiritual believes through fellowship
programs. They also state that prayers and meditation enable them to be close to their
Spiritual Beings. Furthermore, the patients state that they require spiritual help from their
spiritual leaders. 3 Question 2 How Spiritual Consideration Impacts Patient’s Health
Spiritual considerations impact the health of the patient in profound ways. First of all, it
enables a patient to enjoy life even if he or she is in the middle of infection symptoms such
as pain. Secondly, it enables a patient to have a better quality of life and a more optimistic
outlook. For instance, a patient suffering from cancer will feel more comfortable and happy
in the presence of his spiritual leader as compared to other individuals. Furthermore, a
patient can come up with good decisions in situations that ethical judgments are required.
For example, if the doctor reveals to his family members that he should be euthanized,
spiritual belief can enable him to perceive that he might be healed. It also enables the health
care providers to coordinate with the hospital chaplains to provide spiritual care to the
patient (Jarvis, 2008). Finally, patients determine the worth of their lives through spiritual
considerations. Question 3: List of Questions 1. What do you perceive gives meaning to your
life? (Minton et al., 2018). 2. How has hospitalization or infection affected your personal
beliefs? (Timmins & Caldeira, 2017). 3. Which way do you think your spiritual demands
might be improved? 4. Does the community provide any spiritual care to you in any way? 4
