2. WHO WERE JOHN’S PARENTS?

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the
division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her
name was Elizabeth.

3. WHO NAMED JOHN?
Luke 1:13, 19 (ESV)
verse 13; But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer
has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call
his name John.
verse 19; And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of
God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

4. WHY WAS ZACHARIAS MADE SPEECHLESS?

verse 18-22; And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an
old man, and my wife is advanced in years." And the angel answered him, "I
am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to
bring you this good news. And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak
until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words,
which will be fulfilled in their time.” And the people were waiting for Zechariah,
and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. And when he came out, he
was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the
temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute.

sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to
a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph,

wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

verses 10-13; And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah
must come?" He answered, "Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. But I tell
you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him
whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.“ Then
the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. What then did you go out to see? A
prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is

no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of
heaven is greater than he.

waist and ate locusts and wild honey.

verses 3-5; For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for
the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because John had been saying to
him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." And though he wanted to put him to
death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.

word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall
we look for another?"

16. TELL OF JOHN’S DEATH.

verses 3-12; For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his
brother Philip's wife, because John had been saying to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." And
though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. But
when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, so
that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give
me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his
guests he commanded it to be given. He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and his head was
brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took
the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.
