William Levitt was known as "The Henry Ford of Housing" for his mass production techniques that made homes affordable for many after World War 2. Levitt built entire suburbs quickly and cheaply using standardized designs and building methods. His developments in Levittown, New York helped address the postwar housing crisis but also helped create modern suburbia and car-dependent sprawl.
