2. Preliminary task
• We shot our preliminary task at the beginning
of the school year.
• Although we had some knowledge obtained
from gcse media, when compared to now, it
was miniscule due to what we have learnt.
3. What we have learnt-
cinematography
• During the period between our preliminary task
and our construction text, we learnt a huge
amount when concerning cinematography, we
learnt more sophisticated camera shots (angles
and lengths). Thus there is a noticeable
difference in quality between the two texts.
6. • These shots show the development in quality
and knowledge during the time period between
the two texts.We incorporated more
challenging angles and distances in our final
text, using our research into the horror genre as
inspiration and reference to the selection
process of the shots. The preliminary task’s
cinematography is basic in quality in
comparison.
7. Mise-en-scene
• Although we had a relatively strong understanding of mise-en-
scene at the time of the shooting of the preliminary task, we did
not translate this knowledge into the actual text, we did not focus
on the setting or the costume, ignoring mise-en-scene essentially.
• However our final piece, we focused heavily on the mise-en-scene,
as it is a significant and vital component of all forms of visual
media. For example the dad wears a Barbour jacket, as many men
from the south of England choose this attire. We also focused
heavily on lighting, with extreme contrasts being shown
throughout the sequence.
8. Our skills of mise-en-scene and cinematography have developed immensely, this can be
seen in this shot, I chose to position the camera, so that the dolls forehead is at the top of
the frame, so her hair cannot be fully seen, this allowed me to position my hand on top of
the doll’s head to be able to move it, to resemble it coming to life. This greatly helped the
narrative become clear, as it clearly showed why the man went insane, but it also scares the
audience, as the matter of inanimate objects coming to life is horrific due to its unlikely
nature. This technique would’ve not been possible at the beginning of the year, and only
through the development of our camera skills and the increase in our knowledge of the
conventions of horror, were we able to do this sequence.
9. Editing
• Throughout the time period between the two texts we have constantly
being improving our Adobe premier skills and our understanding of the
components of premier. (i:e effects and layers.) we have also become
more precise and professional with our editing, something that is vital
when creating a good piece of visual media text.
10. Sound
• A component of mise-en-scene and editing, we since the
preliminary task have increased our knowledge of sound ten fold,
our preliminary task suffers form white noise disturbance in the
background, something that we insured would not occur in the
final construction piece, also we included music into our final piece,
editing it into the sequence at the right time, creating atmosphere
and suspense. We also included a mixture of diegetic and non-
digetic sound, something that we did not do in the preliminary
task.
