Gifted Education in
Chatham County Schools
       Plan Overview
         2010-2013
AIG Plan in Place
The three-year Plan for Gifted Education
was approved in July 2010 (This is Year 1)
The program is based on the philosophy of
differentiation
The responsibility for providing gifted
services is shared by the regular education
teachers and the AIG teachers through
collaboration and consultation
Major Goals:
Articulates and disseminates clear, comprehensive, and
equitable screening, referral, and identification processes
to school personnel, families and the community
Ensures collaboration among AIG personnel and other
professional staff to develop and implement differentiated
curriculum and instruction.
Informs parents/families and the community of
opportunities available to AIG students on and ongoing basis
and in their native language.
Use ongoing assessment to develop and implement
differentiated instruction.
Academic Components: Nurturing
This is for non-identified students in
grades K-3
The goal is to develop potential in students
from different socioeconomic and cultural
backgrounds
   • High-level literacy materials
   • Thinking Skills curriculum
   • Problem Solving
Academic Components: Screening
Any student in K-12 may be referred by a teacher, a
parent, or by self-nomination
All third graders are screened each spring
The AIG teacher completes an Individual Student
Identification Profile for each referred student
All data is presented to the school’s Needs
Determination Team (NDT) who determines if the
student meets district criteria for AIG identification
Academic Components: Screening
The following information is reviewed:
Classroom performance
Student work products
DRA in English and Spanish
Standardized achievement test scores
Standardized aptitude test scores
AIG identification from another district
Academic Components: Identification

 Students demonstrating 3 or more of these criteria
 will receive services in reading and/or math:
    87% or higher on standardized aptitude test
    87% or higher on standardized achievement test
    93% or higher in specific subject area(s)
    Portfolio of student work products demonstrating
    above-grade level performance
    Two grade levels above (math and/or reading)
    AIG identification in another district
Academic Components: Placement
Identified students are matched with
options to best meet individual needs
A Differentiated Education Plan (DEP) is
developed
Services offered to all AIG students are
reviewed annually and parents are notified
of any changes
Program Service Options
In-class flexible grouping
Cluster grouping (dual language)
Content acceleration
Grade acceleration/grade skipping
Early admission to kindergarten
Resource classroom
Plus time groups
Independent study
Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses
Online courses
PLUS Time
A common block of time when all students
in one grade level go for remediation or
acceleration.
K-3 (Math Stars/Challenge Math and
Literacy)
4-5(Mon. and Tues.)- Math
    (Wed. and Thurs.)-Reading
Communication
Conferences/AIG Parent Night
DEPs
Progress reports
Web pages at district and school levels
Newsletters
Parent Handbooks and Brochures
Chatham County School Notebook
All forms and letters in English and Spanish
