TOLA THE UNKNOWN
1. Tola the Unknown
Text- Judg 10:1-2
1) And after Abimelech there arose to defend
Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a
man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in
mount Ephraim.
2) And he judged Israel twenty and three years,
and died, and was buried in Shamir.
Abimelech
Son of the judge, Gideon, by his
Shechemite concubine. Judges 8:31. (B.C.
1322-1319). After his father's death, he
murdered all his brethren, 70 in number,
with the exception of Jotham, the youngest,
who concealed himself; and he then
persuaded the Shechemites to elect him
king. Shechem now became an
independent state.
2. After Abimelech had reigned three years,
the citizens of Shechem rebelled. He was
absent at the time, but he returned and
quelled the insurrection.
Shortly after, he stormed and took Thebez,
but was struck on the head by a woman
with the piece of a millstone, compare 2
Samuel 11:21 and lest he should be said to
have died by a woman, he bade his armor-
bearer slay him. (much like Saul will do
later)
Judg 9:56
Thus God rendered the wickedness of
Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in
slaying his seventy brethren:
And after Abimelech there arose to defend
Israel Tola-
Who were his enemies?
3. What were his conquests?
How did the people like him?
I. His Alias
Tola
Tola means, “a worm.”
What a contrast with the proud, and
wicked, Abimelech!
Ps 22:6-8
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach
of men, and despised of the people.
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn:
they shoot out the lip, they shake the head,
saying,
4. 8 He trusted on the LORD that he would
deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he
delighted in him.
Job 25:4-6
4 How then can man be justified with God?
or how can he be clean that is born of a
woman?
5 Behold even to the moon, and it shineth
not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight.
6 How much less man, that is a worm? and
the son of man, which is a worm?
Isa 41:14
Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of
Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and
thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
5. Phil 2:8
And being found in fashion as a man, he
humbled himself, and became obedient unto
death, even the death of the cross.
Tola, no doubt, typifies our Lord in His
humiliation.
The judge next judge after Tola is Jair.
His name means, “enlightener.”
This pictures Christ’s coming as “the Sun of
Righteousness.”
The thirty sons, who rode on thirty ass-
colts and had thirty cities, must mean
the rule of that kingdom to come in
which His sons, His co-heirs, will have a
part, as Jair’s sons had authority over
these cities.
6. II. His Ancestry
son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of
Issachar
Pu'ah - He was scattered
John 1:11
He came unto his own, and his own
received him not.
Do'do - His beloved
Matt 3:17
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is
my beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased.
Is'sa char - he will bring reward
7. Acts 17:31
Because he hath appointed a day, in the
which he will judge the world in
righteousness by that man whom he hath
ordained; whereof he hath given
assurance unto all men, in that he hath
raised him from the dead.
Gen 30:18
And Leah said, God hath given me my hire,
because I have given my maiden to my
husband: and she called his name Issachar.
Gen 49:14-15
14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down
between two burdens:
15 And he saw that rest was good, and the
land that it was pleasant; and bowed his
shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto
tribute.
8. Ps 18:27
For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but
wilt bring down high looks.
III. His Address
Shamir in mount Ephraim
Sha'mir. (point or thorn)
Prov 2:6-8
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his
mouth cometh knowledge and
understanding.
7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the
righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk
uprightly.
8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and
preserveth the way of his saints.
9. Jer 4:22
For my people is foolish, they have not
known me; they are sottish children, and
they have none understanding: they are wise
to do evil, but to do good they have no
knowledge.
IV. His Agenda
arose to defend Israel
Acts 10:38
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the
Holy Ghost and with power: who went about
doing good, and healing all that were oppressed
of the devil; for God was with him.
Isa 1:17
Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the
oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the
widow.
10. Isa 1:23
Thy princes are rebellious, and companions
of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and
followeth after rewards: they judge not the
fatherless, neither doth the cause of the
widow come unto them.
Ps 82:3
Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to
the afflicted and needy.
Gal 1:4
Who gave himself for our sins, that he
might deliver us from this present evil
world, according to the will of God and our
Father:
John 17:18-19
18 As thou hast sent me into the world,
even so have I also sent them into the world.
11. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself,
that they also might be sanctified through
the truth.
V. His Appointment
he judged Israel twenty and three years
(Late start, he judges till death)
Acts 20:24
But none of these things move me, neither
count I my life dear unto myself, so that I
might finish my course with joy, and the
ministry, which I have received of the Lord
Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of
God.
2Tim 4:7
I have fought a good fight, I have finished
my course, I have kept the faith:
12. Heb 12:1
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed
about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let
us lay aside every weight, and the sin which
doth so easily beset us, and let us run with
patience the race that is set before us,
VI. His Burial
and was buried in Shamir
Heb 11:38
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they
wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and
in dens and caves of the earth.
Matt 7:22-25
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord,
Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name?
13. and in thy name have cast out devils? and in
thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I
never knew you: depart from me, ye that
work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these
sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken
him unto a wise man, which built his house
upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods
came, and the winds blew, and beat upon
that house; and it fell not: for it was founded
upon a rock.
Conclusion-
Tola, also spelt as tolah or tole, is a Hindi term
which is used in India amd other Asian
countries to measure gold. At present, one tola
gold is = 10grams of gold.
14. Tola was officially replaced by metric units in
1956, however, it is still in use as the
denomination for gold bars in countries like
India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and
Singaport. Among these, ten tola bar is the most
common traded metal.
Tola appears to have been distinguished in
Israel all along, beginning with the ancestor
(Gen. 46:13; Num. 26:23), and going on to
the days of David
Gen 46:13
And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and
Job, and Shimron.
Num 26:23
Of the sons of Issachar after their families: of
Tola, the family of the Tolaites: of Pua, the
family of the Punites:
15. 1Chr 7:1
Now the sons of Issachar were, Tola, and Puah,
Jashub, and Shimron, four.
Prov 22:1
A good name is rather to be chosen than great
riches, and loving favour rather than silver and
gold.
Rev 22:12
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is
with me, to give every man according as his
work shall be.
