Covetousness
1. Covetousness The
Disappointing Pursuit of
Pleasure
Intro:
1Tim 5:5-6
5) Now she that is a widow indeed, and
desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in
supplications and prayers night and day.
2. 6) But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while
she liveth.
In 1898 a struggling author named Morgan
Robertson concocted a novel about a fabulous
Atlantic liner, far larger than any that had ever
been built. Robertson loaded his ship with rich
and complacent people, and then wrecked it one
cold April night on an iceberg. This somehow
showed the futility of everything, and, in fact,
the book was called Futility.
Fourteen years later a British shipping company
named the White Star Line built a steamer
remarkably like the one in Robertson’s novel.
The new liner was 66,000 tons displacement;
Robertson’s was 70,000 tons.
3. The real ship was 882.5 feet long;
Robertson’s was 800 feet.
Both vessels were triple screw and could make
24–25 knots.
Both could carry about 3,000 people,
and both had enough lifeboats for only a
fraction of its occupants.
But then, this didn’t seem to matter because
both were labelled ‘unsinkable’.
On 10 April 1912 the real ship left Southampton
on her maiden voyage to New York.
4. Her …list of passengers [had a collective net]
worth of 250 million dollars.
On her way over she too struck an iceberg and
went down on that cold night of April 10, 1912.
Robertson called his ship the Titan;
the White Star Line called its ship the Titanic.

Text: Luke 12:16-21
I. Classified- rich man
Luke 12:16
And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The
ground of a certain rich man brought forth
plentifully:
5. He was rich, but there was no harm in this.
If capitalism was to be condemned Christ
would have done it right here.
He was known as rich; he had no other
impact on the world than that he was
wealthy.
II. Confined- I have no room
6. Luke 12:17
17 And he thought within himself, saying,
What shall I do, because I have no room where
to bestow my fruits?
“my barns,” “my fruits,” “my goods,” and in
Luk. 12:19 “my soul
He thought within himself; he had a fool for
a counselor.
7. The gathering together of his wealth, and his
schemes for hoarding it (Luk. 12:17), had
disquieted him; he would now make his
wealth the basis of rest and enjoyment when
that had already proven to leave him
unfulfilled.
III. Conned- Soul, thou hast much
Luke 12:18-19
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down
my barns, and build greater; and there will I
bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast
much goods laid up for many years; take thine
ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
8. There was no wickedness, no depravity
about him.
He imagined that material things would
satisfy his soul.
Luke 12:15
And he said unto them, Take heed, and
beware of covetousness: for a man's life
consisteth not in the abundance of the
things which he possesseth.
9. IV. Condemned- thy soul shall be required
Luke 12:20
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night
thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose
shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
“Shall be required of thee” —As compared
with “v19 I will say to my soul.”
10. He completely ignored his responsibility to
God.
Men do not live by their abundance.
Life is short.
Luke 12:39-40
39 And this know, that if the goodman of
the house had known what hour the thief
would come, he would have watched, and
not have suffered his house to be broken
through.
40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son
of man cometh at an hour when ye think
not.
11. V. Consecrated- rich toward God
Luke 12:21
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself,
and is not rich toward God.
Mark 4:19
19) And the cares of this world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of
other things entering in, choke the word,
and it becometh unfruitful.
12. Prov 8:18-21
18 Riches and honour are with me; yea,
DURABLE riches and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than
fine gold; and my revenue than choice
silver.
20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the
midst of the paths of judgment:
21 That I may cause those that love me to
inherit substance; and I will fill their
treasures.
Balaam, Achan, Nabal, Gehazi, Judas, Ananias,
These men were fools, utterly being
overwhelmed in their covetousness.
13. Rev 3:17-18
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and
increased with goods, and have need of
nothing; and knowest not that thou art
wretched, and miserable, and poor, and
blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in
the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white
raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and
that the shame of thy nakedness do not
appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve,
that thou mayest see.
1Pet 1:7
7) That the trial of your faith, being much
more precious than of gold that perisheth,
though it be tried with fire, might be found
unto praise and honour and glory at the
appearing of Jesus Christ:
