Nehemiah 13:
Forever Vigilant
“The
beginning of
evil is the lack
of vigilance.”
St. Poimen
(Shepherd)
First Point
Vigilant
concerning
God’s House
Nehemiah 13
1 On that day they read from the
Book of Moses in the hearing of the
people. And in it was found
written that no Ammonite or
Moabite should ever enter the
assembly of God,
2 for they did not meet the people
of Israel with bread and water, but
hired Balaam against them to curse
them—yet our God turned the
curse into a blessing. 3 As soon as
the people heard the law, they
separated from Israel all those of
foreign descent.
4 Now before this, Eliashib the
priest, who was appointed over the
chambers of the house of our God,
and who was related to Tobiah,
5 prepared for Tobiah a large
chamber where they had previously
put the grain offering, the
frankincense, the vessels, and the
tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which
were given by commandment to the
Levites, singers, and gatekeepers,
and the contributions for the priests.
6 While this was taking place, I was
not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-
second year of Artaxerxes king of
Babylon I went to the king. And after
some time I asked leave of the
king 7a and came to Jerusalem,

7b and I then discovered the evil that
Eliashib had done for Tobiah,
preparing for him a chamber in the
courts of the house of God. 8 And I
was very angry, and I threw all the
household furniture of Tobiah out of
the chamber.
Nehemiah 13
9 Then I gave orders, and
they cleansed the chambers, and I
brought back there the vessels of the
house of God, with the grain offering
and the frankincense.

Second Point
Vigilant
Concerning
God’s Workers
Nehemiah 10
32 “We also take on ourselves the
obligation to give yearly a third part
of a shekel for the service of the
house of our God… 39b We will not
neglect the house of our God.
10 I also found out that the portions
of the Levites had not been given to
them, so that the Levites and the
singers, who did the work, had fled
each to his field. 11 So I confronted
the officials and said, “Why is the
house of God forsaken?” And I
gathered them together and set
them in their stations.
12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of
the grain, wine, and oil into the
storehouses. 13 And I appointed as
treasurers over the storehouses
Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe,
and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their
assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son
of Mattaniah, for they were considered
reliable, and their duty was to
distribute to their brothers.
A Lesson in Effective Action
11 So I confronted the officials…
11b And I gathered them together
and set them in their stations.
13a And I appointed as treasurers
over the storehouses… 13c for they
were considered reliable…
14 Remember me, O my God,
concerning this, and do not wipe out
my good deeds that I have done for
the house of my God and for his
service.
Nehemiah 13
Third Point
Vigilant
Concerning
God’s Sabbath
Nehemiah 10
31 And if the peoples of the land
bring in goods or any grain on the
Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy
from them on the Sabbath or on a
holy day.
15 In those days I saw in Judah people
treading winepresses on the Sabbath,
and bringing in heaps of grain and
loading them on donkeys, and also
wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of
loads, which they brought into
Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I
warned them on the day when they
sold food.
Nehemiah 13
16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city,
brought in fish and all kinds of goods
and sold them on the Sabbath to the
people of Judah, in Jerusalem
itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles
of Judah and said to them, “What is
this evil thing that you are
doing, profaning the Sabbath day?
18 Did not your fathers act in this
way, and did not our God bring all
this disaster on us and on this city?
Now you are bringing more wrath on
Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
“Those who cannot
remember the past are
condemned to repeat it.”George Santayana
19 As soon as it began to grow dark at
the gates of Jerusalem before the
Sabbath, I commanded that the doors
should be shut and gave orders that
they should not be opened until after
the Sabbath. And I stationed some of
my servants at the gates, that no load
might be brought in on the Sabbath
day.
20 Then the merchants and sellers of
all kinds of wares lodged outside
Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I
warned them and said to them,
“Why do you lodge outside the wall?
If you do so again, I will lay hands on
you.” From that time on they did not
come on the Sabbath.
22 Then I commanded the
Levites that they should purify
themselves and come and guard the
gates, to keep the Sabbath day
holy. Remember this also in my
favor, O my God, and spare me
according to the greatness of your
steadfast love.
Colossians 2
16 Therefore let no one pass
judgment on you in questions of
food and drink, or with regard to a
festival or a new moon or a
Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of
the things to come, but the
substance belongs to Christ.
Fourth Point
Vigilant
Concerning
God’s Standards
Nehemiah 10
30 We will not give our
daughters to the peoples of
the land or take their
daughters for our sons.
23 In those days also I saw the
Jews who had married women of
Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And
half of their children spoke the
language of Ashdod, and they could
not speak the language of Judah, but
only the language of each people.
Nehemiah 13
“For a religion in
which Scripture
plays a central part,
grasp of language is
vital.”
H.G.M.
Williamson
25 And I confronted them and cursed
them and beat some of them and
pulled out their hair. And I made
them take an oath in the name of
God, saying, “You shall not give your
daughters to their sons, or take their
daughters for your sons or for
yourselves.
26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin
on account of such women? Among
the many nations there was no king
like him, and he was beloved by his
God, and God made him king over all
Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women
made even him to sin.
27 Shall we then listen to you and do
all this great evil and act
treacherously against our God by
marrying foreign women?”
Nehemiah 13
28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada,
the son of Eliashib the high priest,
was the son-in-law of Sanballat the
Horonite. Therefore I chased him
from me. 29 Remember them, O my
God, because they have desecrated
the priesthood and the covenant of
the priesthood and the Levites.
Nehemiah 13
30 Thus I cleansed them from
everything foreign, and I established
the duties of the priests and Levites,
each in his work; 31 and I
provided for the wood offering at
appointed times, and for the
firstfruits.
Remember me, O my God, for good.
Nehemiah 13
This makes a point vividly
clear: the law – that is, rules,
vows, promises, covenants,
and the such, are all ultimately
powerless to stop sin. Only the
grace of God, alive and flowing
in our lives, can give us the
power to truly overcome sin.
David
Guzik
If we could be saved by
our own promises, by
our own commitment to
Jesus, then His death
would have been noble,
but unnecessary.
David
Guzik
We aren’t saved by
some vow we make, or
some leaf we turn over,
but by trusting in who
Jesus is, and what He
has done to save us.

Guzik

iLEAD_Nehemiah 13_Forever Vigilant

  • 1. A Study in Nehemiah iLEAD Nehemiah 13: Forever Vigilant
  • 2.
  • 3.
  • 4. “The beginning of evil is the lack of vigilance.” St. Poimen (Shepherd)
  • 6. Nehemiah 13 1 On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God,
  • 7. 2 for they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them—yet our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 As soon as the people heard the law, they separated from Israel all those of foreign descent.
  • 8. 4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah,
  • 9. 5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.
  • 10. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty- second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7a and came to Jerusalem,
  • 11. CHRONOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EZRA-NEHEMIAH & ESTHER 538-515 BC 483-473 BC 457 BC EZRA 1-6 ESTHER EZRA 7-10 First Return of the Jews from Babylonian Exile 58 Year Gap Second Return of the Jews from Babylonian Exile 13 Year Gap 444-425 BC NEHEMIAH Third Return of the Jews from Babylonian Exile
  • 12. CHRONOLOGY OF NEHEMIAH 12- Year Gap 445-444 BC NEHEMIAH 1-12 Third Return of the Jews from Babylonian Exile REBUILDING OF THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM 432 BC NEH. 13 Nehemiah’s Reforms
  • 13. 7b and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. Nehemiah 13
  • 14. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. Nehemiah 13
  • 16. John 2 17His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
  • 18. Nehemiah 10 32 “We also take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly a third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God… 39b We will not neglect the house of our God.
  • 19. 10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field. 11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations.
  • 20. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers.
  • 21. A Lesson in Effective Action 11 So I confronted the officials… 11b And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 13a And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses… 13c for they were considered reliable…
  • 22. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service. Nehemiah 13
  • 24. Nehemiah 10 31 And if the peoples of the land bring in goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day.
  • 25. 15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food. Nehemiah 13
  • 26. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?
  • 27. 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”George Santayana
  • 28. 19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day.
  • 29. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.
  • 30. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.
  • 31. Colossians 2 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
  • 33. Nehemiah 10 30 We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons.
  • 34. 23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. Nehemiah 13
  • 35. “For a religion in which Scripture plays a central part, grasp of language is vital.” H.G.M. Williamson
  • 36. 25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.
  • 37. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin.
  • 38. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?” Nehemiah 13
  • 39. 28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. Nehemiah 13
  • 40. 30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work; 31 and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good. Nehemiah 13
  • 41. This makes a point vividly clear: the law – that is, rules, vows, promises, covenants, and the such, are all ultimately powerless to stop sin. Only the grace of God, alive and flowing in our lives, can give us the power to truly overcome sin. David Guzik
  • 42. If we could be saved by our own promises, by our own commitment to Jesus, then His death would have been noble, but unnecessary. David Guzik
  • 43. We aren’t saved by some vow we make, or some leaf we turn over, but by trusting in who Jesus is, and what He has done to save us. David Guzik
  • 44. A Study in Nehemiah iLEAD Nehemiah 13: Forever Vigilant

Editor's Notes

  1. “Phones for you” “If it’s my brother in Florida, I don’t want to talk to him.”
  2. First Point
  3. Nehemiah 13 1 On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God,
  4. 2 for they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them—yet our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 As soon as the people heard the law, they separated from Israel all those of foreign descent.
  5. 4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah,
  6. 5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.
  7. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
  8. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
  9. 8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.
  10. Tobiah’s Track Record He accused the Jews who were planning on rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem of rebelling against the king in order to stir up trouble. (Neh. 2) Tobiah mocked the builders on the wall, saying that if a fox climbed on their wall it would crumble. As the work continued to progress, he was one of three men who plotted to fight against Jerusalem. Nehmiah needed to arm the workers in response. They worked with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other hand, thanks to Tobiah. Tobiah hired a false prophet, Shemaiah, who tried to get Nehemiah to enter the forbidden parts of the Temple in order to seek sanctuary. It was an attempt to discredit Nehemiah and expose him to God’s wrath. Upon the completion of the wall, Tobiah used his marital connections with Jewish nobleman in order to curry favor and extend his influence. Many Jewish nobles were also indebted to him and he used their debt as leverage. He got these nobles to try to twist Nehemiah’s arms to treat him preferentially. (Neh. 6) Tobiah sent intimidating letters to Nehemiah.
  11. Second Point
  12. Nehemiah 10 32 “We also take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly a third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God… 39b We will not neglect the house of our God.
  13. 10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field. 11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations.

  15. A Lesson in Effective Action 11 So I confronted the officials… 11b And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 13a And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses… 13c for they were considered reliable…
  16. Nehemiah 13 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.
  17. Second Point
  18. Nehemiah 10 31 And if the peoples of the land bring in goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day.
  19. Nehemiah 13 15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. 20. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?
  21. 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
  22. 19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day.
  23. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.
  24. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.
  25. Colossians 2 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
  26. Second Point
  27. Nehemiah 10 30 We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons.
  28. Nehemiah 13 23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people.
  29. H.G.M. Williamson “For a religion in which Scripture plays a central part, grasp of language is vital.”
  30. 25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.
  31. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin.
  32. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”
  33. Nehemiah 13 28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
  34. 30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work; 31 and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
  35. David Guzik This makes a point vividly clear: the law – that is, rules, vows, promises, covenants, and the such, are all ultimately powerless to stop sin. Only the grace of God, alive and flowing in our lives, can give us the power to truly overcome sin.
  36. If we could be saved by our own promises, by our own commitment to Jesus, then His death would have been noble, but unnecessary.
  37. We aren’t saved by some vow we make, or some leaf we turn over, but by trusting in who Jesus is, and what He has done to save us.
