2. Key Terms
We:
Christians, Children of God, Followers of Jesus
Respect:
Show regard for or consideration to
Authority:
Those that have been given the power to
control, judge, or prohibit the actions of
others for a given area or domain
4. Our primary reason
We are afraid of what those in
authority are able to do to us
and/or those we love.
We want to gain the favor or
friendship of those in authority.
We love our Father in Heaven
and believe His way is best.
5. Romans 13
1 Let every soul be subject to the
governing authorities. For there is no
authority except from God, and the
authorities that exist are appointed by
God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the
authority resists the ordinance of God,
and those who resist will bring judgment
on themselves.
7. 1 Peter 2
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every
ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake,
whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to
governors, as to those who are sent by
him for the punishment of evildoers and
for the praise of those who do good. 15 For
this is the will of God, that by doing good
you may put to silence the ignorance of
foolish men—
8. Jesus respected authority
The Son of God, the King of Kings, and
the Lord of Lords respected authority.
• He respected his parents.
• He gave the Jewish leadership as much
respect as possible without compromising
the work his Father had given him to do.
• He obeyed the laws of Rome.
10. Jesus is our final authority
Matthew 28:18-20:
And Jesus came and spoke
to them, saying, “All authority
has been given to Me in
heaven and on earth. Go
therefore and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing
them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, teaching them
to observe all things that I
have commanded you; and
lo, I am with you always,
even to the end of the age.”
Amen.
