Activities
Starter
Present PowerPoint with the logos of various well known brands. Students
identify as many as possible. Reveal the answers and briefly discuss why
companies have brands.
Main
• Present the e-bay scenario on the PowerPoint. Students identify factors
they would like to know before buying the item. (Some anticipated
answers are shown on the next slide which could be used to prompt
discussion)
• ‘Which trainer’ activity. Follow instructions on ‘Teacher notes’.
• Present PowerPoint slide with brand logos. Students think about what they
all have in common and feedback. Discuss the fact that all brands are
owned by the same company. Discuss why these brands compete against
each other if they are owed by the same company (If a consumer doesn’t
like Calvin Klein, they will probably select another brand, like DKNY. This
means the company that owns them all still gains the consumer’s money).
• Students consider the price difference over a year of not buying branded
biscuits and whether they would be persuaded to buy non-branded
biscuits. Students work out the price difference over a year (final slide on
PowerPoint). Discuss the idea that supermarket brands could be made by
the branded company.
Plenary
Students complete spending choices sheet. Discussion points: Were you
2. happy with your decision? Would you want to change your mind and why?
What influenced your choice? Would you make a different decision if you had
more information? What else would you want to know about the goods and
services chosen?
