Importance of Saindhav lavana (Rock Salt) as per Ayurveda
1. IMPORTANCE OF SAINDHAV
LAVAN IN PRESENT TIME
Presented by:-
Dr. Vivek Singh
Guided by:-
Prof. P.K.Goswami
Dept. of Samhita & Sanskrit, IMS, BHU
2. Nutrition and dietics
In Ayurveda trya upstambh tells about importance of food
in our daily life.
The question arose by Kashipati Vamak were -
( ch.su st.25)
(i) Is human and diseases formed by same bhavas?
(ii) What are the reason which produces diseases?
Aatrya also indicates that, (ch.sh st 25)

All the bhavas which are present in this world also
present in human body.
Now question arises what are these bhavas?
3. BHAVAS
The answer is panchmahabhuta .our food is also formed by
panch bhautika bhava which nourish our panch bhautick
body by its bhavas.
The answer given by aatreya
by using hitakar aahar a person can gain a healthy body
and improper, unbalanced, unhygenic food produces
severe diseases.
4. MODERN POINT OF VIEW
Acc. to modern science
modern periodic table
contains about 126
elements, some are
microelements and some
are macro elements.
Most of these elements
consumed either by food
or medicines or in other
forms.
5. WHAT TYPE OF FOOD SHOULD
BE TAKEN
According to Caraka Samhita, the substances that can be taken
on daily basis.

• Food is composed of wide distribution of nutrients, which have very
specific metabolic effects on human body.
• 2 categories are:-
1- Macronutrients 2. Micronutrients
In my opinion we can categorised under
Macronutrients:-shali, yava, mudhga.
Micronutrients:-saindhav, sarpi, madhu
6. MACRONUTRIENTS MICRONUTRIENTS
1. Relatively higher in quantity.
2. Contain protein, carbohydrate,
fats.
3. Helps in energy formation.
And structural unit.(A.T.P,
G.T.P )
4. Contain mainly C, H, N, O
molecules.
1. Relatively smaller quantity.(in
mg or micro gm)
2. Vitamins Minerals
(i)water soluble (i) major
(ii) fat soluble (ii)trace
3. Major minerals are the ones that
are required in amount of at
least 100mg./day.
Eg. Na, K, Cl, P, Ca, Mg, S
4. Trace minerals that the body
requires less than 100mg.
Eg. Cr, Cu, F, I, Fe, Zn.
7. Macronutrients are those nutrients, which are required in
large amount.
Micronutrients are essential for assimilation, absorption and
utilization of the macronutrients.
Among Indian pre adolescent boys of 5 years of age to 18 years
showed that boys who were nutritionally deficit, were less tall
and entered late into puberty.(satyanaryana et.al.27 )
A survey conducted by NNMB. Showed that Indian diets were
adequate in proteins but deficit in micronutrients.
This proves that micronutrients are
essential for life. Lavan is considered under
mineral.
8. LAVAN
A no. of salts are described in various
ancient texts ,but panch lavana are
mainly used in medicinal purposes.
In caraka samhita mainly 5 types of lavan
is specified.
Lavanam anna dravya ruchikarnam,
Lavan is that which is best in adding taste
to food materials .
Saindhav is the most useful amongest all
varieties of salts.
9. SALT MODERN REVIEW
Lavan is generally called as salt,it is a mineral
primarily composed of Nacl.
Salt is a compound which is essentially made
up of one acid radical and one basic radical. It
is an end poduct.
It is an essential element in the diet of not only
human but of animals and plant.
Water molecules makes salt hydrous.
Acc. to charak the salt is made up of agni and
jal mahabhuta, which makes it so specific
from other rasas and indicates that when used
in proper amount will be beneficial.
10. WHAT TYPE OF SALT WE
COMMONLY USE
A survey conducted by American heart
assosication,61% of respondents
incorrectly agreed that sea salt is a low
sodium alternative to table salt.
Sea salt is directly obtained through the
evaporation of sea water .it is usually
less processed and retain trace levels of
other mineral like Mg, Ca, K .
Table salt is mined from salt deposit
and then processed to give a fine
texture.
11. Why Saindhav Lavan
As per caraka samhita ,saindhav lavan is one
of those ingredients, that can be taken on
daily basis.
Table salt contain about 3-4 elements,
having highest concentration of Na(98%)
and chlorine. Iodine is further added.
(A) While Scientific study shows that
Saindhav lavan containg about 84 elements
out of the known 126 elements in periodic
table and these are homologous to the
element present in human body.
Which follows the Lok-Purush samya
concept of Caraka.
12. SAINDHAV LAVANA
While describing the property and
benefits of saindhav lavan , it is really
amazing.
Rochana:- increase salivation.
Deepan :- increase the secretion of
gastric juices .
Vrishya:- due to madhur vipaka.
Avidhai:- due to sheet veerya, i.e.
regulating water content throughout
the body.
Tridoshghan.
13. SAY NO TO USE OF COMMON SALTS
In ayurvedic contexts
In limited quantity it is beneficial.
By excessive use it causes:-
(A) Durbalta:- loss of tremendous amount of
energy.
Excessive A.T.P. loss from our body to
cause weakness in our body.
14. (B) RAKTA SHITHILATHA:-
to accompalish the excess use of salt, water is taken from
our cells( either from rasa dhatu, rakta dhatu etc.) in order to
neutralise the unnatural Nacl.
This results in a less than ideal fluid balance in our body.
(c) TRIDOSHKARAKA:-
table salt very often contains pottentially dangerous
preservatives and taste enhancer. These are often added to
improve the ability of table salt.
This results, a production of severe (tridosh) disorders.
Eg. Alzheimers diseases, C.A.H, Cystic fibrosis.
16. SOME OF WONDERFUL BENEFITS OF
SAINDHAV LAVAN
Crystal salt has spent over 250 million years maturing
under extreme tectonic pressure.
The salt unique structure shows vibrational energy. All
the trace elements are available in colloidal forms i.e. they
are so small as your cells can readily absorb them.
This property coreleates with laghu guna in ayurveda.
• It is the highest grade of natural salt.
• It contain no enviornmental pollutants.
17. Stablize irregular heart beat.
Regulate your B.P. in conjuction with
water.
Generate hydroelectric energy in body
cells.
Increase conductivity of nerve cells.
Enhances absorption through intestinal
tract.
18. WHAT EXACTLY IS HIMALAYAN
ROCK SALT
A natural and ridiculously substance and gathered
from Himalayan mountain has been used for
thousand and thousand of years as a natural
medicine.
Provide 84 minerals for human body.
Used for detoxicification :-
water and salt have always played on vital role in human
body.
Lowering B.P.
19. Fullfillment of loss of electrolyte and salt in our body when
we are feeling fatigued.( hygroscopic and sheet veerya.)
Restore your organ readily.
Banish sinus issues and respiratory conditions.
when mixed with hot water it can clear up sinuses issues
and improve any respiratory system.
• Natural hypnotic.
• Maintain acid and alkali balance.
• This salt is tremendously effective in cleaning your arteries
and improve blood circulation.
20. IMPORTANCE OF LAVAN
FOR THE CELLS
Function of our body depends on an efficient flow and
distribution of water.
Water moves into the cell by the process of osmosis and
osmosis is managed by the salt concentration present in the
cells .
The broad spectrum of mineral found in original Himalayan
salt are ideal nutrients to aid the cell in attracting water.
(The essence of life by peter ferreira and Dr.
barbara )
21. CONCLUSION:-
With some 89% of all the sea salt
producers now refining , this salt
simply is not as healthy as it used to
be.
Be of crystalline structure it is not
isolated from 84 inherent minerals .
Saindhav molecules connected in a
harmonious state , this means energy
content in the form of minerals can
be easily metabolised in our body.
Our body gets an ample net gain
with little energy loss.
