This document provides instructions for a lesson in which students will use Adobe Photoshop to merge an image into text on a layer. The objectives are for students to learn how to change text effects and use tools like layers, text, colors, and clipping masks. Students will open an image, add text on one layer and a solid color on another, then create a clipping mask to make it appear the image is inside the text. Optional advanced steps show how to copy the text selection to a new background image. The lesson allows for modifications to meet student needs.

7. ACCOMMODATIONS AND MODIFICATIONS
Teacher can pre-download optional
background images for students to use
or let students download or bring their
own picture to work with. The text can be
changed from their name, a place, a new
vocabulary word, any word or text that
inspire the student. If students find the
assignment challenging, or do not have
previous knowledge of how to use the
program, they can look their peers’ work
or ask for help.
8. INSTRUCTIONS
1. Open the desired image.
2. Add a white solid color to new layer.
3. Drag the new Layer between the two image layers and release.
4. Go to layer 1 and then press T (text tool).
5. Click anywhere on the image and type your name.
6. Resize and move the entered text.
7. Go to Layer 1 again and create a Clipping Mask and save.
9. 1. OPEN THE DESIRED IMAGE.
Open the desired background image and make a copy of this layer using
Ctrl+J or Command+J

10. 2. ADD A WHITE SOLID COLOR TO NEW LAYER.
Add a white solid color to this new layer (this will be the background of the
final piece) by clicking on the New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon. Select
Solid Color and choose white (or the desired color) and Enter.
11. 3. DRAG THE NEW LAYER BETWEEN THE TWO
IMAGE LAYERS AND RELEASE.
Drag the recently created Solid Color Layer (on the left color swatch icon)
and drag the layer down until it appears between the two image layers
and release.
12. 4. GO TO LAYER 1 AND THEN PRESS T (TEXT
TOOL).
Go to layer 1 and then press T (to select the text tool), if desired, select
color and font from the Tool Options Bar (it is easier if selected color
contrast the colors from the image).

13. 5. CLICK ANYWHERE ON THE IMAGE AND TYPE
YOUR NAME.
Click anywhere on the image and type your name (or desired word) and
click the checkmark to accept the text.
14. 6. RESIZE AND MOVE THE ENTERED TEXT.
Go to the layers panel and select the
Type layer. Press Ctrl+T or
Command+T to select the Free
Transform tool and be able to
resize and move the entered text.
Click and drag the corners that
now surround the text and drag it
into the desired position. When
done, press Enter.
*NOTE: if students want to keep the
text as it is and avoid any
distortion, they should hold the Alt
or Option key while dragging and
resizing their text.

16. 7. GO TO LAYER 1 AGAIN AND CREATE A
CLIPPING MASK.
Select the new text layer and drag it
down just below Layer 1. Go to
Layer 1 again and create a
Clipping Mask by clicking on the
small menu icon on the top right of
the Layers panel.
*NOTE: This clips the image, only the
area of the image that is above the
text will be visible, making it seem
that the image is inside the text.
Save image as a new document

18. EXTRA STEPS (OPTIONAL)
If students want to go
beyond the assignment
steps and already dominate
the previews Photoshop
tools, they can take a step
farther.

1. Merge layers.
2. Select background and inverse selection.
3. Copy selection.
4. Open new background image.
5. Paste selection and resize.
6. Save new image.
* NOTE: these few extra steps are optional and up for any changes and
modifications that teacher or student may want to, to ensure creativity
exploitation.

Select the Magic Wand tool to select the white background.
Type and hold the SHIFT key, to add selections (like the inside of certain
letters and vowels.)
