Sustainability is a very subjective term and very vast that can be related to many dimensions, like physical, social, economical, welfare and many more dimensions. We generally use it very small to very large contexts. However, when it comes to the development of the building , it is not a very small term and simple consideration as a small deviation from the perfection could impact the environment potentially. Statistics say, over 45% of the carbon emissions in UK are caused from built environments. Not only that, 73% of the domestic emissions in UK are because of the space heating along with the hot water provision. Building construction and demolition cause over 32% of the carbon emission, in the form of landfill waste.

The Open Compute Project Foundation is a community of engineers around the world, whose mission is to design and enable the delivery of the most efficient server, storage, networking and data center hardware designs for scalable computing. We believe that openly sharing ideas, specifications and other intellectual property is the key to maximizing innovation, accelerating market change and reducing operational complexity in the scale compute space. The Open Compute Project Foundation provides a structure, in which individuals and organizations can share their intellectual property as new or existing projects. The Open Compute Project has demonstrated value creation, as exampled by the adoption of open compute product, the contribution of technologies from the hardware supply chain and the genesis of new companies taking advantage of the opportunity. The Open Compute Project is focused on creating an incubation channel that will host an IP library lowering barriers to entry into the enterprise hardware market and enabling a next generation of hardware companies.

Presented at JAX London 2013 Agile methodologies have had us moving away from Big Up Front Design to evolutionary, emergent design. But how does that work in the real world? Using experiences gained when creating the new Java driver for MongoDB, Trisha takes us on a design journey, where the answer to every question is "It Depends", the users of the system and their use cases are unknown, and lurking at the back of every decision is the question “but will it be backwards compatible?” We’ve all been there, trying to work out how to implement requirements, but have we really thought about the process of design?

The digitization of advertising hasn’t just changed the work that we do. It has also changed the way that we work and the kind of talent needed to succeed. There is no such thing as a standard unit anymore. It takes a team of specialists to develop a campaign that 20 years ago took a handful of people. Agencies can’t use the same model and expect to be successful. The best teams are made up of those who invite others in to make their ideas bigger and better. To succeed in this environment, campaigns must be developed as open source so that other team members can add to and improve ideas.

I spoke to students in the "Introduction to User-Centered Design" class at University of Washington's Graduate School of Communications. As a product manager with a UX background, this was a fun one! I covered my career path and tips, how agile teams work, how Product Managers & UX work together on agile teams (lots of overlap), and a few case studies showing the range of UX & PM involvement depending on the project.

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.
