What is the difference between a Dream and a Goal. Goals are in Writing. We all have dreams. Very few of the dreams come true. When you put it in writing, you can focus on attaining the goal. Describe your Dream Home. Would you have given me the same description 10 years ago? Our dreams are constantly evolving/changing. How do you aim at a moving target? When you put it in writing using SMART criteria, it becomes a stationary target….Much easier to hit!
Earlier, I suggested that you set down and decide what is important to you. What values do you have in life? Set Smart Goals that will improve your life in these areas. Is your Health important to you? Then you should set Smart Goals in that area. No ones “wheel” will look the same because everyone has different interests and different priorities. If you have never set goals before, start out slow. Don’t overwhelm yourself by setting more goals then you can concentrate on. Pick a couple of core values and set a couple of goals that are congruent with them. This is like working muscles that haven’t been in use for a while. You start off slowly and as you gain muscle you gain the ability to work on more goals.
Goal Setting is picking a destination (where do you want to be). Goal Planning is choosing how you will get to the destination. Leaving either out of your Life Plan vastly diminishes your chances of success.
Look at Business planning as a trip. Not setting goals is like leaving on a trip and not having a destination. You might make it somewhere you want to be, but the chances are slim. Not Goal planning is like taking a trip to Houston and not planning a route. You might get there, but the chances are slim. Lets look at Goal Setting and Goal Planning techniques.
Today we are going to talk about some of the basics of Goal Setting and Goal Planning, then we are going to go through an exercise that will start you on Life Planning.
Goal Setting is probably the most written about and talked about of the two parts to Life Planning. It is also the most practiced of the two. The acronym “SMART” best describes the process that we need to take to set our Goals. The “S” stands for Specific Goals You goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are not achievable because they don't provide sufficient direction. You should be able to picture the goal in your mind. Vague goals are difficult to picture. To have a fun vacation, is hard to picture. What does the vacation look like? A cruise of 7 days and 6 nights on the Disney ship Magic. Staying in a state room with a balcony overlooking the Blue ocean. Stuffing myself 4 times a day in the dinning room. Parasailing off the beach of Disney’s island and things that I can picture. Get as many senses involved in your goal as possible. Can you see it, smell it, taste it, feel it? The more senses you can involve in your goal the harder your sub-conscious mind will work to achieve it. Set Measurable Goals Be precise in the dates, the amounts, the length, so you can measure your success. If you can’t measure it, how do you know when you get there? How do you know when you can start celebrating your success? We need to experience these successes to motivate us to succeed on out other goals. To lose some weight is too vague. Will you ever be satisfied? To lose 20 pounds is measureable. I know when I have reached it and I can track my journey. Set Attainable Goals If you set goals that you can’t make, you will be demoralized by them rather than encouraged by them. It is easier to give up on your goals if you have been unable to achieve the goals you set in the past. Set Relevant Goals What is important in your life. The first step to getting what you want is in knowing what you want. Take the time to set up the priorities in your life. Once you do this, then be sure the goals you set are congruent with these values. If you value Family, then don’t set goals the conflict with that value. If Family is a value and you set a monetary goal then it should relate to Family. Does making that amount of money contribute to the things you can do for and with your family. If you look at working towards making that amount of money as taking time away from your family then you don’t have relevant goals. Pickle Jar example Set Time-Bound Goals When specifically will you attain your goal. Without a specific date, we will tend to procrastinate. Also we miss the excitement of accomplishing something in the time set forth.
Determine the tasks that you need to accomplish to attain the goal. Be sure you believe they will get you to the goal and that you can do them. Without the belief, you will falter when obstacles arise or when your are experiencing successes as quickly as expected. Put them in writing. When they're accomplished, check them off. As more and more Tasks are successfully accomplished, and checked off, you'll find yourself becoming more encouraged, and more confident about your abilities. The more you believe, the more you will strive to accomplish, and the more you will enjoy completing even more Tasks. And the more Tasks you complete on time, the closer you'll be to that success. Just as we break large or long-term Objectives down into smaller supporting elements called Major Goals, we further break our Major Goals down into even smaller elements. These small elements are called Tasks, and accomplishing them is what makes the practice of goal setting really work. Tasks are usually the simple things you must do to accomplish a Major Goal. If you've set a Major Goal, for example, to have a complete understanding about investing in bonds by next June 15th, you will have to accomplish a number of Tasks for acquiring that knowledge. Choosing to go to the library and get a book on bonds would be a Task. Reading the book for one hour each this Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, could be three separate Tasks. Visiting the Investors Skills' website for their bond information, would be another Task. Calling your buddy who's had success in the bond market would be a Task as well. All of these Tasks, which should be written down on the same paper as the Major Goal they support, must be set with an Accomplishment Date, for if you procrastinate calling your buddy, never get around to completely reading the book, or don't even bother checking the website, you won't reach your Major Goal of learning about bonds, or won't meet it by its Accomplishment Date. And this, unfortunately for you, will turn your $5 Million by retirement Objective back into the pipe dream it didn't have to be. By focusing your mind on the easy-to-accomplish Tasks, and completing those Tasks, you'll be making great progress towards your Major Goals and Objectives without feeling overwhelmed. Make sure to write down all Tasks, even those that take only minutes to complete. Then, when they're accomplished, check them off. As more and more Tasks are successfully accomplished, and checked off, you'll find yourself becoming more encouraged, and more confident about your abilities. The more you believe, the more you will strive to accomplish, and the more you will enjoy completing even more Tasks. And the more Tasks you complete on time, the closer you'll be to that success you have real Reasons for wanting. The success you originally defined as your Objectives.
How have you done on the tasks. What task do you need to accomplish next. Get someone who you trust to hold you accountable. This can be anyone who believes in you and will be willing to hold you accountable for the tasks that you commit to.
