The ET-IT is a PhD Program developed by the Department of
Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering (DEI) of
the University of Bologna, Italy. It is a joint PhD course with
the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, an institute devoted to high
quality research based in Trento, Italy.
ET-IT offers a 3-years course, which includes:
- a 6 months internship period in a partner institute
outside Italy;
- an international and exciting environment;
- placement support, thanks to the numerous research
projects jointly developed by the DEI Professors and
many private companies based all over the world.

3. ET-IT is a PhD course that prepares young
researchers to be part of both research
teams or industrial R&D units, providing
the ability to innovate, manage projects,
and lead research groups. ET-IT deals
with the research areas related with the
Information and Communications Society.
In particular, the scientific topics are
Electronics, Electromagnetic Fields, and
Telecommunications
A course internationally oriented
ET-IT is taught completely in English, opening its
research groups to international students and to
invited researchers and professors from the major
Universities around the world, and increasing the
spread of the research outcomes and the placement
opportunities. Every year a large number of partnership
agreements are drawn up with a large number of
foreign Universities and Research Institutions making
available joint supervision and the awarding of joint
PhD diplomas. Finally, each PhD student spends at
least six months in a research internship abroad.
A cutting-edge research activity
Three main research areas are covered:
Electronics: study of devices, circuits and electronic
systems, with specific emphasis on microelectronics,
micro and nano-technologies, intelligent sensors,
electronics for telecommunications, electronics,
digitalsystems,electronicsystemsforimplementation
and monitoring, modern computing systems, both
software and hardware.
Electromagnetic fields: research activities related
to microwaves and optical systems, antennas and
propagation, and the theory of Electromagnetics
fields applied to electronics and telecommunications
systems and devices.
Telecommunications: study of systems and
networks, and associated components and devices.
In this context, the PhD program addresses issues
related to the architectures of telecommunications
systems and networks (wireless, cellular, fixed/mobile
terrestrial/satellite, wired and optical networks) as
well as information technology such as multimedia
applications and services, Smart cities, smart grids,
etc.
Apersonalizedstructuredlearningprogramme
The educational path consists in a common program,
aimed at providing the fundamental research enablers
to every student along with networking opportunities,
and an ad-hoc designed path for each individual PhD
strictly related to the selected research topic.
In the common program PhD students perfect their
language skills (expression and argumentation),
mature an original investigation methodology, interact
with PhD Students in other subjects, create life lasting
interpersonal relationships .
A cultural rich environment rooted in the
history of the ICT world and projected into the
future
The PhD in Electronics, Telecommunications,
and Information Technologies belongs to the DEI
Department. It roots in the cultural heritage of
Guglielmo Marconi and projects itself in the future
through its deep involvement in research and

Bologna and Cesena are located in the Emilia-Romagna Region, one of the wealthiest and most
developed regions in Europe, with the third highest GDP per capita in Italy. Emilia-Romagna

Trento is a city rooted in art and history, where the Italian and Mitteleuropean cultures meet.
Unique amongst the Alpine cities, the City of the Council (1545 - 1563) still keeps its precious
monuments as tokens of its rich artistic and historic heritage.
Trento is located in the Trentino Province (part of the Trentino Alto-Adige Region), where
approximately 49,000 enterprises are active. From the industrial point of view, Trentino is
characterized by a highly diversified system: from ICT to mechanical engineering, from the food
and agriculture chain to sustainable building and the timber industry. In Trentino the natural
environment really does make the difference: 60% of the territory is covered by forests, and
there are 200 alpine lakes, 3 nature parks and the Dolomites.
6. GRANTS
15 admitted candidates will receive a financial support package which includes a grant of approximately 13,650€
(yearly) to cover living expenses during the 3 years of the degree.
All admitted candidates will receive up to 1,343 €/year (for the second and third year of the degree) to cover their
participation to meetings; furthermore, a grant (up to 2,050 €) will be available if they spend a visiting period
abroad up to six months.

The Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering (DEI) started its activities
in October 2012, when the former Department of Electrical Engineering (DIE) joined part of the former
Department of Electronics, Computer Sciences and Systems (DEIS). The department is located on two
campus branches (Bologna and Cesena) and consists of around 120 scientists, whose research and
education activities cover the following fields of Industrial and Information Engineering: Automation,
Bioengineering,ElectricDrivesandSystems,ElectricalandElectronicMeasurements,ElectricalEngineering,
Electromagnetic Fields, Electronics, Operations Research, Telecommunications.
The Fondazione Bruno Kessler
Based in Trento, Italy, Since 2007, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler promotes cultural activities, scientific
research, technological development. FBK is devoted to the exploration of innovative frontiers of knowledge
with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches and on the applications area. It is also actively
involved in the transfer of research results: support for new entrepreneurship, for the growth of brand-new
professional skills and for the improvement of public administration structures. More than 350 researchers
