He must go through 3 phases of recovery. Phase I – The first phase of his metamorphosis is the disabled phase . He resists and resents the intrusions on his humanity. The technologies seemed like such inferior substitutes for what nature had given him and the accident had taken away. Phase II – This second phase was the mechanical phase . Austin used the technology to get around and began to realize some of its potential. The technology often made him feel constrained when he tried to do things he used to do so easily and comfortably with this human parts. Phase III – The third phase was the bionic base . Austin realized that first and foremost he was still a human being; not a machine.
