positive and negative impact on effective
  leadership
• Explore ways to use ‘High Tech’ to be
  ‘High Touch’
• Identify danger signs & strategies for
overcoming the negative impacts of virtual
  communications
• Use a simulation to hone your leadership 1
Name that 70’s show!
We can rebuild him. We have the
              technology.
We have the capability to make the
      world's first Bionic man.
Steve Austin will be that man. Better
        than he was before.
   Better . . . stronger . . . faster.

                                         2
Becoming Bionic
Steve Austin’s future looks grim.
Scientist implant a computer chip, and a bionic eye, arm and legs.
Technology is forced upon him; not by his choice.

3 phases of recovery.
• Phase I – Disabled phase.
    – resists & resents the intrusions on his humanity
    – sees the Technologies as inferior substitutes
• Phase II – Mechanical phase.
    – uses the technology to get around
    – begins to realize some of its potential
    – Is often constrained by the technology in things he used to do so
easily and comfortably with his human parts
• Phase III – Bionic phase.
    – realizes first & foremost he was still a human being; not a machine
    – uses his techno-charged capabilities to pursue success and
      happiness for himself and others
    – is in touch with both his humanity and his technology 3
• Teamwork isn’t a technology.
• Teamwork is a human process, a human
  connection that creates magic.
• Cohesiveness is about the team’s humanity-it’s
a sense of team, level of trust, and degree of
  unity.
• use technology to stay tightly linked by trust,
  teamwork, and mutual success.
• 2001 worldcom American study 7 out of 10 work
  virtually
                                                    4
The challenges of this millennium
           Bill Gates:
Business at the speed of thought
• 80’s = quality
• 90’s = reengineering
• 00’s = velocity

We need results that are a magnitude faster
 than teams can create today

                                              5
Will we become bionic?
What if Being Bionic means:
• being human & effectively using
  technology
• using technology in creative ways to
  create, maintain & extend
     • our human connections
     • and our human capability.

                                         6
E-teams & the 3 phases
Phase I – Disabled phase
  −resists & resents technology
  −sees technologies as inferior substitutes

Phase II – Mechanical phase
−uses the minimum capability of the technology
−begins to realize some of its potential
−often feels constrained by the technology

Phase III – Bionic phase teams prepared to
  −use techno-charged capabilities to pursue
  success for self and team
  −accepts technology as a surrogate
                                                   7
−is in touch with humanity through technology
Face to Face Advantages
• 55% of our ability to understand & create
  rapport comes from visual cues
• 25% of our ability to understand comes
  from feeling cues
• 20% comes from audio cues

                                              8
New Rhythms?
• How do we help our work teams to choose the
  best communication methods, practices &
  patterns?
• How do will we use these communication
  technologies to:
  – Improve our relationships
  – Improve our pace of life
  – Engage in healthy technology use
  – Drive employee, client & customer satisfaction to
      achieve business success
                                                          9
Success rests on
1. How we prepare people to use technology in human
         ways
2. Have champions who inspire people to wisely use the
technologies as a bridge (not a barrier)
3.       Expectations - set the bar;
− use tech to be more effective in contact & teamwork. (not to
           avoid)
− have real-time contact periodically to improve rapport not to do
           the work.
− highlight the human impact/emotion of the work accomplished
4. Training & involvement
     - train people to be aware of differences & needs in self &
           others
     - train people in the key technologies & features they will need
5. Evolution – hone the saw (skills & tools)

                                                                            10
Supplements
• Shipping same support items to each site
• Use technology to
   – recognize good work with joy
   – have frequent contact
   – engage & align people
   – Share information, learning, insights, excitement, negative news
   – Simplify & speed collaboration
• Build trust, loyalty & self-management
• Use humor & warm; casual language
• express respect, understanding, caring unity trust,
  motivation, acknowledgement,
• Express subtle correction only on a personal basis
                                                                      11
Summary
Consider:
• the target person/people (temperament, learning style,
  emotional intelligence, generational preferences)
• the leader
• the task
• The best venue or media
• Consider the needs of your key people what are their
preferences in terms of contact - frequency, duration,
  content media
• The tools do not create teamwork
• How your team uses them does (or does not – are virtual
  tools avoidance tactics?)
                                                       12
Shared moments of truth
• Successful e-teams focus on the key behaviors
that are critical to individual and organizational
  success
• SAS moments of truth
• Behaviors win customers or turn them away;
  make teams or break them
• Carlzon ‘change random acts of excellence into
consistent, conscious acts of excellence by
  everyone’
• Moments of truth are there when leaders are not

                                                   13

Editor's Notes

  1. Steve Austin’s future looks grim. Scientist decide to implant a computer chip, and a bionic eye, arm and legs incorporated into his body; Technology is forced upon; him not by his choice. He must go through 3 phases of recovery. Phase I – The first phase of his metamorphosis is the disabled phase . He resists and resents the intrusions on his humanity. The technologies seemed like such inferior substitutes for what nature had given him and the accident had taken away. Phase II – This second phase was the mechanical phase . Austin used the technology to get around and began to realize some of its potential. The technology often made him feel constrained when he tried to do things he used to do so easily and comfortably with this human parts. Phase III – The third phase was the bionic base . Austin realized that first and foremost he was still a human being; not a machine.
