2. This presentation will describe the following events in my
life:
• My life before I was required to provide for myself
• During the transition of being out on my own
• My life now; after my experiences of being out on my own
• How my mindset about success and working toward success has
changed
• How I have informed others of my experiences
• How others have responded to these experiences
3. “Destiny is not a matter of chance;
it is a matter of choice. It is not a
thing to be waited for; it is a
thing to be achieved.”
-William Jennings Bryan (America’s Mission)
4. Before my experiences
As a child:
• I thought that everything in life was handed to me
• I never had to work toward anything
• I could always take the easy way out and still come
out ahead
• Thought that I had a predetermined path to success
5. During My Shift
My parents gradually cut me off financially
I had to learn how to provide for myself
Everything became very tough for me
Was forced to get a job
Had to learn how to balance many different tasks
effectively
6. After My Change
I have a much different mindset toward life in
general
Realize I really have to work hard toward success
Am much more appreciative of the things I have
Have all the knowledge I need in order to succeed
Am now on the right path
7. How I Shared My Experiences
My Friends:
• I told my friends all about what I was going through during my
shift. Many of them were experiencing the same thing, so we
could help each other.
• Other friends learned more from my experiences by the change
in my attitude and my actions.
• All of my close friends helped me get through this shift. They
were respectful towards me and always were willing to listen to
me.
8. How I Shared My Experiences
My Family:
• My family was the most helpful during this time of change.
• They were the most attentive to me, and always listened to
anything I had to say.
• Without them I wouldn’t have the job I do now.
• My dad put me in contact with his executive coach, which
helped me tremendously.
9. How I Shared My Experiences
My Co-workers:
• My co-workers really learned of my experiences through action.
• They all noticed a change in attitude toward work and how my
work ethic greatly improved over the time of my shift.
• I would still talk to many of them about what I was
experiencing and some would help me by explaining their
similar experiences.
10. Other’s Responses to My Shift
My Friends:
• My friends responded very positively to me explaining my
experiences to them.
• Many of them used what I learned to help them get past certain
obstacles that they were facing.
• They were glad to see that I had overcome my problems and I
think it gave them motivation.
11. Other’s Responses to My Shift
My Family:
• My family was very proud to see me become more mature and
motivated
• They were really excited to see that I was capable of achieving
things on my own.
• They also noticed how I seemed much happier and more
confident all the time.
12. Other’s Responses to My Shift
My Co-workers:
• My co-workers, although helpful to me, were the least
impressed by my change.
• I’m not as close to them as I am my friends and family, so I
didn’t expect them to be as moved.
• If I had to change one thing about how I presented my
experiences to others it would be to become closer to my co-
workers so that my experiences would leave a bigger impact on
them.
13. Conclusion
I am now more motivated
More positive and willing to accept new challenges
Have the knowledge I need to succeed
I am now on the right path and working toward a
successful future
