Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss. It is typically caused by abnormally high pressure within the eye. There are several types of glaucoma including primary open-angle glaucoma, acute-angle glaucoma, and normal-tension glaucoma. Treatments include eyedrops, oral medications, laser therapy, surgery, and drainage tubes. Glaucoma is diagnosed through tests that evaluate optic nerve damage and eye pressure, and people with risk factors like increased age, ethnicity, eye or medical problems, or a family history are more likely to develop glaucoma.
