Rational/Purpose: Creating safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environments for
all students, including those with exceptionalities is a key component of a teacher’s
responsibility. It is imperative that teachers understand the components and process of
establishing and maintaining safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environments to
ensure that students have the opportunity to become active and effective learners and develop
emotional well-being, positive social interactions, and self-determination. Novice teachers also
need to understand how to collaborate with colleagues to use motivational and instructional
interventions to teach individuals with exceptionalities how to adapt to different environments,
as well as how to intervene safely and appropriately with individuals with exceptionalities in
crisis.
Creating safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environments concentrates on
teachers setting the tone for the expectations of their classrooms all while considering the diverse
backgrounds, interests, personal experiences, etc. of the students. Teachers must be able to
demonstrate the ability to establish a safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environment
that aligns with Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions (PBIS) by: creating the physical
arrangement, establishing positively stated rules and procedures, planning for building a rapport
with students and families, and establishing a class wide behavior management plan that includes
hierarchy of reinforcement and consequences.
Collaborative special education candidates must demonstrate competency in instructional
design and implementation to ensure that instructional goals are being met. This assignment will
allow candidates to meet criteria related to each of the following Council for Exceptional

I. Overview
Co-teaching is designed to meet the educational needs of students with diverse learning options. It allows teachers to focus on more intense and individualized instruction in the general education setting for students with special needs. However not all schools have the ability to effectively co-teach and co-plan. Schools are not equipped to offer professional support and co-planning sessions for general education and special education teachers. Not many schools understand effective co-teaching models.
My role is to research effective co-teaching models and present this information to staff during an in-service training.

a. Research co-teaching strategies with documented effectiveness by locating at least 5 recent journal articles.
b. Survey present teachers across two schools (building-wide) and determine what types of co-teaching is implemented in the respective classrooms.
c. Survey student and teacher feedback regarding the effectiveness of present co-teaching design.
d. Assist co-teachers with co-planning sessions and differentiation strategies.

- 1. Details: Family and community engagement is critical to the success of all students. Including family and community members can be challenging because of the many dynamics, such as time, communication, and engagement issues. Educators must create engagement strategies that are purposeful and thoughtful to the community demographics. Part 1: Family and/or Community Assignment Research and develop a homework assignment/learning activity for the content area that will engage the family and/or community. Your homework assignment/learning activity should include: A learning objective describing the desired learning outcome of the activity. (For example, “Students will design and implement a composting program in their community that aligns to the United States Environmental Protection Agency composting guidelines.”) In 100-250 words, describe the homework assignment/learning activity, and how the assignment/learning activity engages the family and community. Detail how family and/or community can be involved in establishing a positive learning environment, describing collaborative strategies.
- 2. Part 2: Reflection In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on the homework assignment/learning activity that engages family and/or community. Address the following: Methods to communicate with families and other stakeholders about the needs of students. Challenges teachers face when creating homework, and activities that engage family and/or community. The importance of engaging family and community in students’ education. How you will deal with concerns or issues with parents and the possible solutions to support positive collaboration. Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
