5. Deafhood
• Total sum of all positive meanings of “Deaf” past, present
and future.
• Lifelong search to explain our existence
• Internal/external dialogue re: what being a Deaf person in
a Deaf community and the world may mean
• Becoming and maintaining largest “Deaf” self possible
6. We believe…
• The emergence of each Deaf child is a cause for
celebration for their family and the Deaf world.
7. ~Marilyn Cassidy, Hearing Mother
and Grandmother of Deaf Children~
“Every Deaf baby is born to two sets of
parents – biological/adoptive parents and
the Deaf community.” (paraphrased)
8. We believe…
• Every Deaf child born provides the world with a deeper
appreciation of language and humanity.
10. We believe…
• Being Deaf is just another way to access a language
naturally.
11. “The human brain does not discriminate
between the hands and the tongue.
People discriminate but not our
biological human brain.”
Ladd P. (2003). Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood. Clevedon, England: Multilingual Matters Ltd., p. 129.

12. We believe…
• A worldview embracing Deaf people, traditions,
languages, gifts and capacities create a healthy
environment for the Deaf child with themselves, their
families, education and those different than themselves.
13. We grieve with a heavy
heart because…
• The current practices of “early detection and intervention”
systematically deprives the child from being joyfully,
unashamedly Deaf and from acquiring an awesomely
natural language and instead obsesses negatively on their
tiny ears and mouth.
14. "I admit the ease with which a deaf child
acquires sign language and its perfect
adaptability for the purpose of
developing his mind; but after all it is not
the language of the million of people
among who his lot is cast."
Ladd P. (2003). Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood. Clevedon, England: Multilingual Matters Ltd., p. 129.

15. “The deaf believe that they are our
equals in all respects. We should
be generous and not destroy that
illusion. But whatever they believe,
deafness is an infirmity and we
should repair it whether the person
who has it is disturbed by it or not.”
Prosper Meniere
1855
17. We grieve with a heavy
heart because…
• The Deaf child is taught to forget they are Deaf, and those
responsible for their well-being believe they must try to
forget the child is Deaf.
18. "We should try ourselves to forget
that they are deaf. We should try
to teach them to forget that they
are deaf."
Ladd P. (2003). Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood. Clevedon, England: Multilingual Matters Ltd., p. 129.
Alexander Graham Bell

19. We grieve with a heavy
heart because…
• The massive “hearing loss” industry masks power, greed
and financial benefits in name of benevolence.
20. Unpeeling the Mask
• Since 1880’s- Oralism dominated
• Oralism “all-encompassing set of policies &
discourses aimed at preventing [ASL]”
• control framing “helping poor deaf & dumb”
21. Unpeeling the Mask
• Really? Actually help those folks? Nope.
• Since 1980’s recognition of signed languages
increased, hearing lay people more open
• But still get mixed and contradictory messages
about the Deaf experience
• Importance of REFRAMING
22. Unpeeling the Mask
• Important to understand “culture” & its
importance for identity and political unity
• no culture, difficult to resist oppression
• Search for meanings of Deafhood could be
mankind’s final frontier. (9)
23. We demand…
• A total TRANSFORMATION of the Early Hearing Detection
and Intervention system to one that utilizes the Early
Healthy Deaf Identity framework.
25. We demand…
• EHDI commit to an audism-free* environment, be led by a
majority of Deaf people, and use signed language, i.e.
American Sign Language, as the most accessible
language in all EHDI activities.
*Audism is the attitudes and practices based on the assumption that behaving in the
ways of those who speak and hear is desired and best. It produces a system of privilege,
thus resulting in stigma, bias, discrimination and prejudice—in overt or covert ways—
against Deaf culture, Sign Language, i.e. ASL, and Deaf people from all walks of life.

26. ACADEMICALLY
INVALID!
Suppose…
• Anti-feminist male PhDs conducted research on
women’s leadership styles?
• Monolingual English speaking PhDs interviewed
Japanese-speaking students’ reasoning abilities?
• Racist white PhDs studied African-Americans’
employment skills?
• Knee surgeons advised car mechanics?
27. Deaf Research?
• If the culturo-linguistic center, with…
•Historical
•Psychological
•Sociological
•And so on…
• …dimensions…
• …is not used =
ACADEMICALLY
INVALID!
28. Deaf Research?
• Funding determined by non-Deaf or audists
• Non-Deaf and/or audists refereeing deafness
issues
• The entire research superstructure (priorities,
power, values, etc.)ACADEMICALLY
INVALID!
29. We demand…
• EHDI promote equitable resources, funds and Deaf
professionals to expand innovative Deaf and ASL-
centered materials for families and other professionals
working with Deaf babies.
