Rhetorical Analysis Of One Second Every Day By Cesar Kuriyama
After watching all our TED talk candidates for our rhetorical analysis, I believe I had a better
connection with the filmmaker Cesar Kuriyama's One second every day, because his message was
geared more towards a technological approach to memory. Kuriyama first begins his TED talk by
referencing fellow TED talker Stefan Sagmeister's The power of time, telling us that Sagmeister
works in a span for seven years and then takes one off, dedicating that year to projects of his
interest. Kuriyama then reflects on Sagmeister, saying he was inspired by his philosophy to record
one second of each day of his life, starting from the age of thirty, and later compacting his daily
videos into one continuous video, because he now sees an importance for each day of his life. ...

The reason I believe he used a visual is that, as Kuriyama says, "...visualization is a way to trigger
memory..." While I did feel that the usage of his video was an example of what the app, 1 Second
Everyday, was capable of and that he was advocating for it, I believe his main purpose was to
inform his audience that a visual representation of memory, in general, would have more accuracy
and "live" passed a future where he is unable to recall who he is and his loved ones (by sickness like
Alzheimer's'.) However, if Kuriyama was not promoting the app, then maybe he really believes
technology can be instrumental to the legacy of ourselves and our family and friends. However, if
Kuriyama was not promoting the app, then maybe he really is since, believing technology can be
instrumental to the legacy of ourselves and our family and friends. "There are so many tiny,

around 65 inch sq. In 1960s, Wilson produced the T2000 which was made out of steel that featured
a wire wound around the frame to make string loops (tennisracketsuk.com). In 1975 aluminum

Literary Analysis : Stefan Sagmeister
Stefan Sagmeister, born in Austria in 1962, is famed for his ability to provoke a strong reaction
through the images and techniques he uses in his work. His hand rendered typography and use of
controversial imagery also make up the identity of Sagmeister's work. Sagmeister pushes his
audience to something of an ethical limit with his spreads, which is sometimes unsettling. His work
is renowned for focusing on strong themes such as sexuality, humor and in some instances slightly
disturbing imagery and human emotion (Heller (1).
Sagmeister first ventured into the visual arts world writing for an Austrian magazine called Alphorn,
as well as creating illustrations and designing layouts. This experience prompted him to abandon his
engineering studies and pursue a career in graphic design. Upon his exceptance, to a private art
school Sagmeister designed a posters for the Schauspielhaus theatre group. This poster was dark and
brooding. He intentionally diverted from the bright colors popular during that time in Vienna. His
use of humor in his work started to appear in these posters as they often parodied the traditionally
'tacky' theatre posters (Present (2).
Stefan Sagmeister continued his artistic education when he was awarded a scholarship to Pratt.
During his time at Pratt, Sagmeister dreamed of working at Tibor Kalman's graphic design studio
M&Co,. Sagmeister names Kalman as his most, and only, influential and inspirational mentor.
Kalman had a similar attitude toward design

Early Life
Sagmeister started out in the world of graphic design at the young age of fifteen, when he worked
for Austrian magazine 'Alphron'. He started out writing pieces for the magazine, but soon came to
learn that he much preferred deciding on the layout in opposed to writing articles. It was also here
that he discovered his love for hand–driven typography:
"We were setting headlines with Letraset sheets donated by friendly design studios, and as they
invariably had all the "e 's" missing, it was easier to write that headline by hand than reconstructing
the missing "e". That 's where my love for hand writing stems from." (Stefan Sagmeister, 'Answers:
Being a Design Student') This discovery led him away from his original path of education in
engineering, and brought him to study graphic design
Sagmeister studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, there he was introduced to
Schauspielhaus theatre group. For them, he designed grungey posters, heavy on the anarchist
graphics, with a theatrical twist.
He later received a Fulbright scholarship – a highly competitive grant – to move his studies to the

Essay on Stefan Sagmeister, an Influential Designer
Libby Castellani Holly Vaughn GRA 1109C 17 October 2012 Stefan Sagmeister: An Influential
Designer In today's art world there seems to be a large gap that separates fine art from commercial
art. Often there is a disconnected coldness associated with those who work in communications art
and produce art for clients. As if all emotion and feeling is stripped from commercial artwork
merely because it was created with the intention of pleasing a client. Stefan Sagmeister bridges the
gap in the art industry by redefining commercial design as a personal, emotional, and deep art.
While Sagmeister's work encompasses a vast spectrum of mediums such as, album covers, logos,
installations, and posters it is his philosophy on design that ... Show more content on

The poster displays the midsection of Sagmeister's nude body, stretching from the top of his lip all
the way down to where his pubic hair begins. The audacity of his brazen body is accompanied by
harsh lettering that has literally been carved into his skin by his intern with a razorblade (Heller
& Vienne, 10). While the broad reception to this poster can be attributed to its shock–value,
Sagmeister's self–mutilation was a commentary on the absurdity of inking the body with tattoos
(Heller & Vienne, 10). The scratches in his body display the details of the lecture as well as
Sagmeister's words pertaining to his philosophy on design, Style=Fart. This philosophy, which he
has now put to rest, translates as his conscious effort to not get wrapped up in fashion statements or
trends; design that is defined by a temporary style is meaningless (Designboom). Sagmeister
explains why he relinquished the philosophy in an interview with Designboom: I discovered that
this is simply not true. Through experience I found that if you have content that is worthwhile the
proper expression of that content, in terms of form and style is actually very important. It can be a
very useful tool to communicate that content (Designboom). Stefan Sagmeister also has two
published books under his design belt (Sagmeister). Made You Look, Sagmeister's first book was

Sagmeister Essay
Introduction How art is presented in a museum is based off guidelines. The shows cannot be too
crowded, there has to be a flow to the pieces, and there has to be a concept behind the curation of
the art. This process can take years depending on the size of the show; both floor plans and 3D
models are created to curate shows. Shows in other countries and cities will follow similar
guidelines. Some exhibits may have more money put into them and more thought about the
curation, but generally there will be a concept, and flow to the pieces shown. I walked around the
impressionist and post–impressionist exhibit in the Chicago Institute of Arts, passing wildly famous
pieces such as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and countless ... Show more

Sagmeister is famous for his installation artwork that is shown all over the world. Sagmeister is
Austrian born, whose career started at age 15 writing for a magazine, leading to his interest in the
layout of his articles instead of actually writing them. As a student, he studied in both Vienna,
Austria and New York City, USA. The thought put into his installations revolves around the idea of
happiness and one's self where not only is his goal to make others happy with his work, but also to
make himself happy. Sagmeister works famously with typography in his pieces as well as the color
yellow. The goal of his art is to invoke a response from the audience, to make them have strong
feelings about his art, which is expressed in his series of works "What I've Learned in my Life So
Far". The works shown in his booklets highlight the creative process of his works. In his pieces,
there is ultimately a story behind them; a story that drives the piece to become what you see on the
wall, billboard, sign, etc. The stories inspire the installation but despite each story being vastly
different, there is a common theme throughout most of his works, what is important in life and what
makes you

The World Of Yesterday, By Anthea Bell
Stefan Zweig's The World of Yesterday originally published in 1942 and translated into English in
2009 by Anthea Bell is a perceptive memoir that skillfully recounts the life of Zweig (a Jewish
middle class male) beginning with his childhood in Vienna, Austria pre–World War I and ends right
before Zweig's suicide in 1942. During his account, Zweig provides critical commentary on various
historical events that is invaluable when it comes to putting these events in the context of the
everyday life of the individuals living through them. He also provides accounts of many societal
structures as well as of interesting individuals that are not necessarily important in the grand scheme
of things but help the reader build a more complete picture of the period. Throughout the book,
Zweig maintains a cautionary as well as a didactic tone that attempts to caution the reader about
how society can change so drastically and rapidly. Overall, Zweig's book is an excellent memoir that
helps put major historical events into context; however, the book also has some problems that
undermine the delivery of the cautionary message of the book. This book is a memoir by Stefan
Zweig that recounts his life and critically analyses some of the major world events that Zweig lived
through. The setting at the beginning of the book is Vienna, Austria in the Pre–World I years, by the
end of the book the setting has changed many times because the author travels throughout Europe
namely to Paris, Berlin,

The Sports Gene Analysis
We Determine Our Own Destiny
How much of our lives do we actually control ? Everyone has and will always have different
outlooks on this question that can't possibly be proven, we can solely try to persuade and convince
each other otherwise. For example two authors had two different viewpoints on this controversial
question.David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene, argues that physical ability formed at birth out
ways hard work and success achieved through years of practice. The opposing author William Ernest
Henley wrote a poem called Invictus that is strong and powerful to anyone that reads it, claiming
that you are the master of your own destiny. These are both reasonable claims but I believe William
Ernest Henry has a more convincing argument therefore he better answers the question, How much
of our lives do we actually control ?
In The Sports Gene, David Epstein compares two high jumpers and their success, arguing that
physical ability is the leading cause of an individual's success. David Epstein uses Donald Thomas
as an example to support his claim by comparing his success to Stefan Holm. Donald Thomas was
an inexperienced high jumper who had an incredible amount of success leading him to participate
and eventually win the 2007 World Championships. Stefan Holm was the reigning Olympic
champion of the high jump which used discipline and many years of practice to achieve success but
was defeated by a neophyte. Epstein provides information about studies conducted on

Graphic Design has become very popular career these past few years. By competition in the design
community, it is pushing designers to think outside the box. One designer that spiked an interest in
society is Jessica Walsh. Walsh couples her innate talent with an energetic drive for success.
Continuing with this strong work ethic, it helped Jessica accomplished many things before the age
of 30. She travels the world, creates amazing designs, and became partner of a prestigious design
firm. Walsh was born in New York City on October 30, 1986. She is the daughter of entrepreneurs
who owns a software company. Even though most of her family is business oriented with little
background in art, she strived in dexterity. When she was a little girl, Walsh was always compelled

she had a short live entrepreneurship. Her first business was selling Magic Moss Rocks with her

for Levi's. After two years as an employee, she was ready to move on; however, Sagmeister had
other plans. He offered Walsh a partnership in his company at the age of 25 (Rodd,

Fine Art And Commercial Art
Fine Art and Commercial Art With rapid economic growth and improving technologies, many artists
are increasingly become interested in commercial art. This trend is mainly influence by the fact that
the financial gains in commercial art are much greater than in fine art. Since the designers are
instructed on what to do by their clients, their level of creativity and ingenuity is minimized. This is
partially attributed to the fact that many people have misunderstood the true meaning of fine art.
However, other factors include market preferences and tastes. The corporate world wants to produce
products and services that will be easily understood and liked by the public. Nonetheless, there are
those who still adhere to the purity of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case, the artist is hired and is subjected to the employers' preferences and constraints. In most
cases, the artists are not credited for the work. The main purpose of commercial art is
communication. A commercial artist organizes information in an effective visual presentation to
portray the virtues of a particular service or product. In most cases the employers hire commercial
artists to create advertisements, animations and illustrations, which conveys a message intended for
consumers. Communication is therefore decisively important in this field. Conversely, the definition
of fine art has been generally misunderstood to mean artistic works that are of high quality.
However, an important aspect that should be included in the definition of fine art is that the artists
adhere to the purity of their style or discipline. This implies that fine art should be judged based on
its aesthetic value, meaningfulness and beauty. Notably, unlike commercial artists, fine artists are
self–motivated and decide on what they want the artwork to look like. Furthermore, they are
motivated by the desire to express their ideologies rather that communication. Due to the lucrative
nature of art commercialization, many fine artists prefer to practice both disciplines. Artists, such as
Bob Gill, Ben Shahn, Robert Weaver and Robert Peak,

Characteristics Of Postmodernism In Graphic Design
"Form follows emotion" is a practical postmodernism idea in graphic design to adapt to the current
society (Staniscia). This idea is practiced by lots of graphic designers, but probably the most evident
one is Stefan Sagmeister. The essay will start with a brief introduction on history and characteristics
of Postmodernism in graphic design, from that how graphic design responded to its current society
as well as how the world has been effected by graphic design are elaborated. Then it will dive into
one of Postmodernism's ideas "form follows emotion" by examining work and design practice of
Stefan Sagmeister. He believes good design to this current society means touching and emotionally
communicative design, therefore the design must bear the voice and individuality of the designer to
a certain extent (Sagmeister, 2012) .
Postmodernism embraces many ideas in respond to its previous art movement: Modernism.
Modernism's concept "From Follows Function" encourages designers to put simplicity, legibility as
first priorities, reject personal traits, aim at "impersonal creativity" like Jan Tschichold has described
(Fiell, 2003). Modernism began at the end of the 19th Century and was influenced by the new
technologies and the industrialized world which was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his 1993 essay, Cult of the Ugly, Stephen Heller has referred to postmodernism as " ugly graphic
design" "appeals to anyone without the intelligence, discipline, or good sense" (Bierut 159). (cite).
However, over time Heller's critics has softened, Heller and Scher regarded postmodernism is as
experimentation and it is the first step to progression in design (cite, website). The fact that critics
like Heller had a change of heart to Postmodernism suggests a positive signal to the potential,
feasibility of Postmodernism to contemporary design culture. (cite,

eyes of the public. This poster is famous for drawing attention and causing a split between people
loving or hating it. On one side, people believed this poster was an unconventional way of depicting
a message. People thought this kind of design would negatively encourage others, and normalize
self–harm. However, others praised this project by Sagmeister. People thought this work truly

Contemporary Artists : Art No Authority Can Tell Your Own...
So much more can be conveyed in artwork when a finite canvas doesn't imprison an artist. Pushing
the boundaries of artwork from previous time periods allows new artists and graphic designers to
experiment with, challenge, and/or destroy the rules of graphic design. This allowed for designs that
truly challenge the audience, as well as other designers. Take for example the grunge artwork of
David Carson who broke most compositional and legibility rules of graphic design – his style can be
summarized by the phrase "expressive deconstruction." Anything from grunge, to street art, to
carving writing into your own body with a knife is considered Contemporary Design. In this world
of art no authority can tell you what you're allowed to do. With the definition of art so stretched, it
really gives a lot of freedom to those of the contemporary time period to express a wide range of
ideas. Contemporary Artists are becoming more popular in today's culture; however, there were
some back in the early 1930s and late 1940s that started the contemporary movement such as Bruce
Nauman, Stefan Sagmeister, and Christo & Jeanne–Claude. Bruce Nauman is considered to be the
most influential contemporary artist. Nauman expresses his idea using diverse materials and media,
which is why it's hard to recognize his work as one particular style. His contemporary artwork
reflects how old modernists have disappeared and clearly states that the graphic design community
has moved on. One of his most

Rhetorical Analysis Of One Second Every Day By Cesar Kuriyama

  • 1. Rhetorical Analysis Of One Second Every Day By Cesar Kuriyama After watching all our TED talk candidates for our rhetorical analysis, I believe I had a better connection with the filmmaker Cesar Kuriyama's One second every day, because his message was geared more towards a technological approach to memory. Kuriyama first begins his TED talk by referencing fellow TED talker Stefan Sagmeister's The power of time, telling us that Sagmeister works in a span for seven years and then takes one off, dedicating that year to projects of his interest. Kuriyama then reflects on Sagmeister, saying he was inspired by his philosophy to record one second of each day of his life, starting from the age of thirty, and later compacting his daily videos into one continuous video, because he now sees an importance for each day of his life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason I believe he used a visual is that, as Kuriyama says, "...visualization is a way to trigger memory..." While I did feel that the usage of his video was an example of what the app, 1 Second Everyday, was capable of and that he was advocating for it, I believe his main purpose was to inform his audience that a visual representation of memory, in general, would have more accuracy and "live" passed a future where he is unable to recall who he is and his loved ones (by sickness like Alzheimer's'.) However, if Kuriyama was not promoting the app, then maybe he really believes technology can be instrumental to the legacy of ourselves and our family and friends. However, if Kuriyama was not promoting the app, then maybe he really is since, believing technology can be instrumental to the legacy of ourselves and our family and friends. Wilson's tennis racket differs from other company's tennis racket in the sense that no other company has been as influential and intimately involved in the shaping the game of tennis (Wilson.com). Wilson is the true American icon in the world of sports equipment (Wilson.com). Wilson has grown to be the world's leading manufacturer of ball sports equipment, but originally their company started in 1915 by Thomas E. Wilson. Wilson & Co. was originally named Thomas E. Wilson Company named after the president of the company Thomas E. Wilson. The name was changed to Wilson & Co. after Thomas E. Wilson left the company (Wikipeadia.com). The first tennis racket produced by Wilson was produced in 1949 (tennisracketsuk.com). It was made out of laminated wood, with heads of around 65 inch sq. In 1960s, Wilson produced the T2000 which was made out of steel that featured a wire wound around the frame to make string loops (tennisracketsuk.com). In 1975 aluminum tennis racket were introduced. This material was lighter than steel and allowed the construction of the oversized tennis rackets. This racket made the tennis player hit with more spin or slice on the ball with their 100+ in sq head sizes (tennisracketsuk.com). 1980's was the introduction to the first graphite tennis rackets. • 3. Literary Analysis : Stefan Sagmeister Stefan Sagmeister, born in Austria in 1962, is famed for his ability to provoke a strong reaction through the images and techniques he uses in his work. His hand rendered typography and use of controversial imagery also make up the identity of Sagmeister's work. Sagmeister pushes his audience to something of an ethical limit with his spreads, which is sometimes unsettling. His work is renowned for focusing on strong themes such as sexuality, humor and in some instances slightly disturbing imagery and human emotion (Heller (1). Sagmeister first ventured into the visual arts world writing for an Austrian magazine called Alphorn, as well as creating illustrations and designing layouts. This experience prompted him to abandon his engineering studies and pursue a career in graphic design. Upon his exceptance, to a private art school Sagmeister designed a posters for the Schauspielhaus theatre group. This poster was dark and brooding. He intentionally diverted from the bright colors popular during that time in Vienna. His use of humor in his work started to appear in these posters as they often parodied the traditionally 'tacky' theatre posters (Present (2). Stefan Sagmeister continued his artistic education when he was awarded a scholarship to Pratt. During his time at Pratt, Sagmeister dreamed of working at Tibor Kalman's graphic design studio M&Co,. Sagmeister names Kalman as his most, and only, influential and inspirational mentor. Kalman had a similar attitude toward design ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Early Life Sagmeister started out in the world of graphic design at the young age of fifteen, when he worked for Austrian magazine 'Alphron'. He started out writing pieces for the magazine, but soon came to learn that he much preferred deciding on the layout in opposed to writing articles. It was also here that he discovered his love for hand–driven typography: "We were setting headlines with Letraset sheets donated by friendly design studios, and as they invariably had all the "e 's" missing, it was easier to write that headline by hand than reconstructing the missing "e". That 's where my love for hand writing stems from." (Stefan Sagmeister, 'Answers: Being a Design Student') This discovery led him away from his original path of education in engineering, and brought him to study graphic design Sagmeister studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, there he was introduced to Schauspielhaus theatre group. • 6. Essay on Stefan Sagmeister, an Influential Designer Libby Castellani Holly Vaughn GRA 1109C 17 October 2012 Stefan Sagmeister: An Influential Designer In today's art world there seems to be a large gap that separates fine art from commercial art. Often there is a disconnected coldness associated with those who work in communications art and produce art for clients. As if all emotion and feeling is stripped from commercial artwork merely because it was created with the intention of pleasing a client. Stefan Sagmeister bridges the gap in the art industry by redefining commercial design as a personal, emotional, and deep art. While Sagmeister's work encompasses a vast spectrum of mediums such as, album covers, logos, installations, and posters it is his philosophy on design that ... The audacity of his brazen body is accompanied by harsh lettering that has literally been carved into his skin by his intern with a razorblade (Heller & Vienne, 10). While the broad reception to this poster can be attributed to its shock–value, Sagmeister's self–mutilation was a commentary on the absurdity of inking the body with tattoos (Heller & Vienne, 10). The scratches in his body display the details of the lecture as well as Sagmeister's words pertaining to his philosophy on design, Style=Fart. This philosophy, which he has now put to rest, translates as his conscious effort to not get wrapped up in fashion statements or trends; design that is defined by a temporary style is meaningless (Designboom). Sagmeister explains why he relinquished the philosophy in an interview with Designboom: I discovered that this is simply not true. Through experience I found that if you have content that is worthwhile the proper expression of that content, in terms of form and style is actually very important. It can be a very useful tool to communicate that content (Designboom). Stefan Sagmeister also has two published books under his design belt (Sagmeister). • 7. Sagmeister Essay Introduction How art is presented in a museum is based off guidelines. The shows cannot be too crowded, there has to be a flow to the pieces, and there has to be a concept behind the curation of the art. This process can take years depending on the size of the show; both floor plans and 3D models are created to curate shows. Shows in other countries and cities will follow similar guidelines. Some exhibits may have more money put into them and more thought about the curation, but generally there will be a concept, and flow to the pieces shown. I walked around the impressionist and post–impressionist exhibit in the Chicago Institute of Arts, passing wildly famous pieces such as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and countless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sagmeister is famous for his installation artwork that is shown all over the world. Sagmeister is Austrian born, whose career started at age 15 writing for a magazine, leading to his interest in the layout of his articles instead of actually writing them. As a student, he studied in both Vienna, Austria and New York City, USA. The thought put into his installations revolves around the idea of happiness and one's self where not only is his goal to make others happy with his work, but also to make himself happy. Sagmeister works famously with typography in his pieces as well as the color yellow. The goal of his art is to invoke a response from the audience, to make them have strong feelings about his art, which is expressed in his series of works "What I've Learned in my Life So Far". The works shown in his booklets highlight the creative process of his works. In his pieces, there is ultimately a story behind them; a story that drives the piece to become what you see on the wall, billboard, sign, etc. The stories inspire the installation but despite each story being vastly different, there is a common theme throughout most of his works, what is important in life and what makes you ... • 8. The World Of Yesterday, By Anthea Bell Stefan Zweig's The World of Yesterday originally published in 1942 and translated into English in 2009 by Anthea Bell is a perceptive memoir that skillfully recounts the life of Zweig (a Jewish middle class male) beginning with his childhood in Vienna, Austria pre–World War I and ends right before Zweig's suicide in 1942. During his account, Zweig provides critical commentary on various historical events that is invaluable when it comes to putting these events in the context of the everyday life of the individuals living through them. He also provides accounts of many societal structures as well as of interesting individuals that are not necessarily important in the grand scheme of things but help the reader build a more complete picture of the period. Throughout the book, Zweig maintains a cautionary as well as a didactic tone that attempts to caution the reader about how society can change so drastically and rapidly. Overall, Zweig's book is an excellent memoir that helps put major historical events into context; however, the book also has some problems that undermine the delivery of the cautionary message of the book. This book is a memoir by Stefan Zweig that recounts his life and critically analyses some of the major world events that Zweig lived through. The setting at the beginning of the book is Vienna, Austria in the Pre–World I years, by the end of the book the setting has changed many times because the author travels throughout Europe namely to Paris, Berlin, ... Everyone has and will always have different outlooks on this question that can't possibly be proven, we can solely try to persuade and convince each other otherwise. For example two authors had two different viewpoints on this controversial question.David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene, argues that physical ability formed at birth out ways hard work and success achieved through years of practice. The opposing author William Ernest Henley wrote a poem called Invictus that is strong and powerful to anyone that reads it, claiming that you are the master of your own destiny. These are both reasonable claims but I believe William Ernest Henry has a more convincing argument therefore he better answers the question, How much of our lives do we actually control ? In The Sports Gene, David Epstein compares two high jumpers and their success, arguing that physical ability is the leading cause of an individual's success. David Epstein uses Donald Thomas as an example to support his claim by comparing his success to Stefan Holm. Donald Thomas was an inexperienced high jumper who had an incredible amount of success leading him to participate and eventually win the 2007 World Championships. • 11. Fine Art And Commercial Art Fine Art and Commercial Art With rapid economic growth and improving technologies, many artists are increasingly become interested in commercial art. This trend is mainly influence by the fact that the financial gains in commercial art are much greater than in fine art. Since the designers are instructed on what to do by their clients, their level of creativity and ingenuity is minimized. This is partially attributed to the fact that many people have misunderstood the true meaning of fine art. However, other factors include market preferences and tastes. The corporate world wants to produce products and services that will be easily understood and liked by the public. Nonetheless, there are those who still adhere to the purity of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case, the artist is hired and is subjected to the employers' preferences and constraints. In most cases, the artists are not credited for the work. The main purpose of commercial art is communication. A commercial artist organizes information in an effective visual presentation to portray the virtues of a particular service or product. In most cases the employers hire commercial artists to create advertisements, animations and illustrations, which conveys a message intended for consumers. Communication is therefore decisively important in this field. Conversely, the definition of fine art has been generally misunderstood to mean artistic works that are of high quality. However, an important aspect that should be included in the definition of fine art is that the artists adhere to the purity of their style or discipline. This implies that fine art should be judged based on its aesthetic value, meaningfulness and beauty. Notably, unlike commercial artists, fine artists are self–motivated and decide on what they want the artwork to look like. Furthermore, they are motivated by the desire to express their ideologies rather that communication. Due to the lucrative nature of art commercialization, many fine artists prefer to practice both disciplines. Artists, such as Bob Gill, Ben Shahn, Robert Weaver and Robert Peak, ... • 12. Characteristics Of Postmodernism In Graphic Design "Form follows emotion" is a practical postmodernism idea in graphic design to adapt to the current society (Staniscia). This idea is practiced by lots of graphic designers, but probably the most evident one is Stefan Sagmeister. The essay will start with a brief introduction on history and characteristics of Postmodernism in graphic design, from that how graphic design responded to its current society as well as how the world has been effected by graphic design are elaborated. Then it will dive into one of Postmodernism's ideas "form follows emotion" by examining work and design practice of Stefan Sagmeister. He believes good design to this current society means touching and emotionally communicative design, therefore the design must bear the voice and individuality of the designer to a certain extent (Sagmeister, 2012) . Postmodernism embraces many ideas in respond to its previous art movement: Modernism. Modernism's concept "From Follows Function" encourages designers to put simplicity, legibility as first priorities, reject personal traits, aim at "impersonal creativity" like Jan Tschichold has described (Fiell, 2003). • 15. Contemporary Artists : Art No Authority Can Tell Your Own... So much more can be conveyed in artwork when a finite canvas doesn't imprison an artist. Pushing the boundaries of artwork from previous time periods allows new artists and graphic designers to experiment with, challenge, and/or destroy the rules of graphic design. This allowed for designs that truly challenge the audience, as well as other designers. Take for example the grunge artwork of David Carson who broke most compositional and legibility rules of graphic design – his style can be summarized by the phrase "expressive deconstruction." Anything from grunge, to street art, to carving writing into your own body with a knife is considered Contemporary Design. In this world of art no authority can tell you what you're allowed to do. With the definition of art so stretched, it really gives a lot of freedom to those of the contemporary time period to express a wide range of ideas. Contemporary Artists are becoming more popular in today's culture; however, there were some back in the early 1930s and late 1940s that started the contemporary movement such as Bruce Nauman, Stefan Sagmeister, and Christo & Jeanne–Claude. Bruce Nauman is considered to be the most influential contemporary artist. Nauman expresses his idea using diverse materials and media, which is why it's hard to recognize his work as one particular style. His contemporary artwork reflects how old modernists have disappeared and clearly states that the graphic design community has moved on. One of his most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
