Thesis: Solving our environmental problems is more difficult than many environmentalists believe. A
thesis statement is the main idea, not the title. It must be a complete sentence that explains in some
detail about what you expect to write. Title: Social Security and Old Age Thesis: Continuing changes in
the Social Security System make it almost impossible to plan intelligently for one 's retirement. A thesis
statement is narrow, rather than broad, so that it can be fully supported. Broad: The American steel
industry has many problems. Narrow: The primary problem of the American steel industry is the lack of
funds to renovate outdated plants and equipment. A thesis statement is specific rather than vague or
general. Vague: Hemingway 's war stories are very good. Specific: Hemingway 's stories helped create
a new prose style by employing extensive dialogue, shorter sentences, and strong language. A thesis
statement has one main point rather than several main points. More than one point may be too difficult
for the reader to understand and the writer to support. More than one main point: Stephen Hawking 's

"Making Inference"
An Inference Defined
In order to knock the verbal section of your standardized test or even the reading portion of your test in
school right out of the ballpark, you need to know what an inference is, first. An inference is an
assumption made based on specific evidence. We make inferences all the time in real life. For instance,
your girlfriend might say to you, "Nice hair," and you could make the inference that she is being rude
because she was smirking when she said it. In life, it's pretty easy to infer the implied meaning – the
meaning not stated directly – because you can use context clues like body ... Show more content on

You'll have to actually infer that you need to make an inference about the passage. Sneaky, huh? Here
are a few that require inferencing skills, but don't use those words exactly. * "With which of the
following statements would the author most likely agree?" * "Which of the following sentences would
the author most likely use to add additional support to paragraph three?"
Step 2: Trust the Passage
Now that you're certain you have an inference question on your hands, and you know exactly what an
inference is, you'll need to let go of your prejudices and prior knowledge and use the passage to prove
that the inference you select is the correct one. Inferences on a multiple–choice exam are different from
those in real life. Out in the real world, if you make an educated guess, your inference could still be
incorrect. But on a multiple–choice exam, your inference will be correct because you'll use the details
in the passage to prove it. You have to trust that the passage offers you the truth in the setting of the
test, and that one of the answer choices provided is correct without stepping too far outside the realm of
the passage.
Step 3: Hunt for Clues
Your third step is to start hunting for clues – supporting details, vocabulary, character's actions,
descriptions, dialogue, and more – to prove one of the inferences listed below the question. Take this
question, for example:
Based on the information in the

Usage of punctuation marks in academic writing
Introduction
These are symbols which indicate the organisation in written language, structure and the intonation to
be observed in a sentence when it is read aloud. In the written English, It has been necessary to
eliminate the ambiguity existing in a sentence. For this reason, punctuation marks have been in used to
bring out the intended meaning of a sentence rather than the variations that can be gotten from it.
The punctuation practice had not been embraced in fully but not long after printing was invented, many
of these marks have been added till to date. As of now, the number of the punctuation marks has
reached fourteen, but many are yet to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
E.g. Jacob and Hildah went to the Chinese department to ask for more information regarding their
brother who studies in Hong Kong, China. It is also used in abbreviation: E.g. Her Apr. honeymoon
went sour. Here the word Apr. has been abbreviated to mean the month "April."
The hyphen (–) also known as the en dash. It is slightly the width size of an 'n' and it is slightly long
when compared to a hyphen. It is used in joining compound modifiers having open compound
elements. E.g. In the New–York city, the guy was named in the latest journal produce by the leading
writer. Or, He went to North Carolina–Virginia boundaries to see his fiancée who live there. Also, it is
used when expressing time periods. E.g. He will be in Nigeria in the time between Jan–May this year. It
is also employed between the parts of a name which are compounded or a word or syllables of a word
(Michael, 55). E.g. (a) The woman who addressed the crowd at the ceremony was going by the name:
Mrs. Holt– Raymond. (Used as a compound name). (b) He laid the two tables back–to–back in the van
when they were as to arrange the furniture. (used as a compound word). And the last example shows the
use of a hyphen between syllables of a word. i.e. When we went to our grandpa, we were able to meet
with the disputed thought–full couple.
The semicolon (;) is used as a connector of independent group of words while indicating a relationship
which is closer to the

A glance at the table of contents is enough to show that the sequence of chapters is erratic and closer
inspection reveals that the scope of individual chapters is far wider than appears at first sight.
Philosophic doctrines (which, according to the author, are the basis of the talismanic art), theory of
magic, astronomical, astrological and physical lore, extensive directions for the practice of the art, and
accounts of the peoples by whom it is employed are jumbled together throughout the book, with no
discernible guiding principle. If a systematic arrangement is anywhere perceptible, it is in the
astrological and astronomical material, though even this is far from selfcontained or methodically
ordered. Subjects which belong together are separated (e.g., the geographical sections on pp.171 ff. and
394 ff.), long, discursive definitions, appearing in unexpected places, further break the sequence (e.g.,
pp.78 and 343)–. and there is a great deal more to make the reader's task more difficult. This manner of
writing may well be intentional, whether to make the magical sections appear less suspect by
interlarding them with theoretical passages, or to make certain doctrines seem less strange by
administering them in small doses, or to demonstrate the equal validity of the magical and
philosophical material, or for a combination of all three reasons. At all events, a similar method of

And memo is one of the tools used for precise and distortion free communication. The topic of our
report is "Office Memo: Contrast between Theoretical Concept and Actual Practice". In this report, we
showed the differences as well as the similarities between theoretical concept and actual practice. At
first, we gathered theoretical knowledge about the office memo such as– its layout and functions from
several books. Than, we entered into the practical field and collected two samples of office memo and
information about its functions from two renowned organizations. This organizations are– 1. Sonali
Bank Limited 2. Social Islami Bank Limited After that, we analyzed both theoretical knowledge and
practical information about memo and contrasted between the two. We mainly focused on the layout of
memo, but also illustrated functions of memo. In case of Sonali Bank Limited, we found that more
elaborate layout of memo are used in communication. This layout is different in many ways from the
theory such as– ornamental language is used. But the layout of the memo used by Social Islami Bank is
close to the theory to an extent. But in this organization, memo is used for functions that are different
from the theoretical ones. In our research, we found that every organization does not necessarily follow
the theoretical concept in case of forming and using memo.

WHAT IS LANGUAGE?
Language is the most important aspect in the life of all beings. We use language to express inner
thoughts and emotions, make sense of complex and abstract thought, to learn to communicate with
others, to fulfill our wants and needs, as well as to establish rules and maintain our culture.
In a sense, animals talk to one another. But it is different from human talk. Every human language uses
sounds. Not all animal languages do, however. The language of the bees and some other kinds of

PURPOSE AND COLLECTION METHODS
The English which is spoken in India is different from that spoken in other regions of the world, and it
is regarded as the unique variety which is called Indian English. The purpose of this folklore project is
to show some of the various ways Indians have intentionally and unintentionally customized English to
better suit their needs and to discuss some of the problems and situations which can and do arise when
Indians use or experience English in different settings. Attitudes about English and English speakers in
India are also explored.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIAN ENGLISH
Indian English is a distinct variety of the English language. Many Indians claim that it is very similar to
British English, but this opinion is based on a surface level examination of lexical similarities. Of
course, one must keep in mind that not every linguistic item is used by every Indian English speaker
and that a great deal of regional and educational differentiation exists. Even so, items can be identified
which are indicative of Indian English speech and which are widely used.

Essay Standard English
In contemporary society the Standard variety of English is the most commonly used as it is respected
and associated with a higher prestige. Its usage is also advocated by prescriptivists who believe that it is
the 'correct' and only variety that should be used. Standard English is usually seen in formal settings,
where its usage is necessary for official and public purposes. However, contextual factors play a vital
role in determining the most appropriate variety to be used, which is supported by the Principle of
Appropriateness. Certain contexts where a non–standard variety is necessary are in social media
settings and in communities of different ethnicities, where they are undeniably required to create
solidarity between speakers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A number of students also tried to make the contention that Standard English was not necessary,
without appreciating the irony they were discussing the topic using Standard English. Standardisation
and codification were often not well understood. Few students explored the importance of orthography
and grammar in maintaining a Standard English and why these combine to create a variety of English
that is understood by most of the population. The following extract provided a broad range of relevant
and contemporary examples that enabled the student to provide strong evidence in support of why other
varieties of English have a value and place in Australian society. There is good use of metalanguage
and the paragraphing is structured and cohesive. There are many people in society, especially those
with a prescriptivist attitude, who strongly believe that the Standard is 'intrinsically superior to other
varieties', as stated by K Burridge. It is clear however that this is not true, when one considers the
ability of ethnolects and Aboriginal English to express identity and finer nuance. Ethnolects occur when
features of someone's first language or 'mother tongue' are adopted into their second language, in this
case English. Features can include the phonological addition of vowel sounds to the ends of nouns e.g.
bread /_/ (common to Greek and Italian); the

Marketing consists of all the activities to facilitate the exchange. Within this societal perspective, then
(1) the makers (2) what they are marketing and (3) their potential markets all assume broad dimensions.
The category of marketers might include, in addition to business firms, such diverse social units as (a) a
political party trying to market its candidate to the public (b) the director of an art museum providing
new exhibits to generate greater attendance and financial support (c) a labor union marketing its idea to
members and to company management; and (d) professors trying to make their courses interesting for
students. In addition to the range of items normally considered as products and services, what is being
marketed might include (a) ideas such as reducing air pollution or contributing to the red cross (b)
people, such as new football coach or a political candidate and (c) places, such as industrial plant sites
or a place to for a vocation. In a broad sense markets include more than the direct consumers of
products services and ideas. Thus a state university's market includes the legislators who provide funds,
the citizens living near the university who may be affected by university activities and the alumni. A
business firms market may include government regulatory agencies, environmentalists, and local tax
assessors. Definition of Marketing As you already know there are

How to Make Project Report
How To Prepare a Project Report Report writing is one of the primary objects of any student who are in
the threshold of completing their graduation. It is to be noted that the final report is not to be done for
sheer formality. This report acts as a tool for judging the professional skill of the new engineer. It is also
considered to be an extended service for the engineering students who might require information.
Remember this report will be subjected to critical analysis by many readers. Hence to prepare the final
report, an engineering graduate must have good knowledge about the practical skills that will be
required to solve an engineering problem. All sorts of resources must be compiled to create a report.

Each chapter on quantitative methods describes key theoretical choices and how these are executed in
IBM SPSS Statistics. Unlike most other books, we do not discuss theory or SPSS, but link the two. This
is a book for non–technical readers! All chapters are written in an accessible and comprehensive way so
that non–technical readers can also easily grasp the data analysis methods. Each chapter on research
methods includes simple examples to help the reader get a hands–on feel for the technique. Each
chapter concludes with an illustrated real–life case, demonstrating the application of a quantitative
method. We also provide a second, real–life case with an accompanying dataset, thus allowing readers
to practice what they have learnt. Other pedagogical features such as key words, examples, and end–of–
chapter questions support the contents. This book is concise, focusing on the most important aspects
that a market researcher, or manager interpreting market research, should know. Many chapters provide
links to further readings and other websites besides that of the book. Several mobile tags in the text
allow readers to quickly browse related web content using a mobile device (see section "How to Use

additional and readily accessible information. A comprehensive Web Appendix with further analysis
techniques, datasets, video files, and case studies is included.

Hedging Currency Exposures in a Multinational Corporation
ABSTRACT OF THE MASTER'S THESIS Financial theory offers several rationales for financial risk
management. Hedging enables firms to maintain their access to internal funds as well as reduces the
costs of financial distress. The theoretical framework offers, however, few tools for currency risk
identification and for choosing a proper hedging instrument. This Thesis seeks to help firms manage
risks better by defining the currency risk exposures of a multinational corporation, by describing their
effects on the cash flows, profit and loss and balance sheet of the corporation as well as by comparing
the applicability of currency forwards and currency options in hedging these exposures. The exposure
framework is constructed based on an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Literature and Language
Chapter 9 Language and Literature There is a very close relationship between language and literature.
The part of linguistics that studies the language of literature is termed LITERARY STYLISTICS. It
focuses on the study of linguistic features related to literary style. 9.1 Theoretical background Our
pursuit of style, the most elusive and fascinating phenomenon, has been enhanced by the constant
studies of generations of scholars, "Style", the phenomenon, has been recognized since the days of
ancient rhetoric; "stylistic", the adjective, has been with us since 1860; "stylistics", the field, is perhaps
the creation of bibliographers. (Dolores Burton, 1990) Helmut Hatzfeld was the first biographer of
stylistics and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this section, we shall briefly discuss the grammatical and semantic aspects. 9.2.1 Foregrounding and
grammatical form Consider the following examples, both of which describe inner city decay in the U.S.
The first is from the Observer (29 November 1995) : ex.9–1 The 1960 dream of high rise living soon
turned into a nightmare. In this sentence, there is nothing grammatically unusual or "deviant" in the
way the words of the sentence are put together. However, in the following verse from a poem, the
grammatical structure seems to be much more challenging, and makes more demands on our
interpretative processing of these lines: ex.9–2 Four storeys have no windows left to smash But in the
fifth a chipped sill buttresses Mother and daughter the last mistresses Of that black block condemmed
to stand, not crash. The sentence in line 2 of this verse that starts with But in the fifth is unusual in that
the predicate of the sentence is made up of a sequence of embedded elements, as we can see if we write
them out in a full form: "A chipped sill buttresses mother and daughter who are the last mistresses of
that black block which is condemned to stand, not crash." Furthermore, the main verb in this sentence
is buttress. This word can be either a noun or a verb, but we would argue that it is more likely to occur
as a noun in less literary contexes. In literary texts,

Using this way of errors correction students usually realize that their teacher is not the only source of
correction and they can learn a lot from one another. The author of the book `Error Analysis and
Interlanguage` S.P.Corder states that " when a learner has made an error, the most efficient way to teach
him the correct form is not by simply giving it to him, but by letting him discover it and test different
hypotheses." Mistakes are OK, everyone makes them. The role of the teacher is not only to correct the
mistakes but also prevent them. But how to correct mistakes? There are several ways of error
correction. 1. Students are writing a paragraph about a holiday in ones or twos. – We know very well
that a paper that is returned with red markings all over is quite discouraging for the student. The most
important aspect while giving feedback is adopting a positive attitude to student writing. Feedback
sessions must be a beneficial experience for the student if the teacher shows the strong points as well. If
the teacher tries to make comments and corrections on the final version of the student paper, the teacher
would be exhausted and the student would be discouraged. One alternative can be giving feedback
through the process of writing. That is, while the student is planning and organizing his ideas, the
teacher can comment on the unity and coherence of ideas. Or while the student is writing his draft, the
teacher can proofread for word–order,

To incorporate the quotation smoothly into the sentence, writers can use what is called an identifying

Emily Dickinson's Capitalization and Punctuation
The poetry of Emily Dickinson is one of the most recognizable of the 19th century. Dickinson's poetry
stands out because of its unconventional use of capitalization and punctuation. Her poems contain
capitalized words which are not normally capitalized. Her poems are noted for the frequent use of the
dash. Literary scholars have attempted to interpret Dickinson's unconventional capitalization and
punctuation. Some believe that it was merely part of Dickinson's penmanship (Weisbuch 73). They
therefore edit Dickinson's poetry and publish them in standardized form. Others believe that the
capitalization and punctuation were a conscious effort on Dickinson's part. These scholars notice the
little nuances of Dickinson's dashes, such as whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Dickinson is not consistent in her capitalization (Porter 140). She does not capitalize every
single noun. As demonstrated above, the word "light" is not capitalized. Furthermore, Dickinson also
capitalizes words which are not nouns, as seen in lines 4 – 6 of "He fumbles at your Soul". The word
"ethereal" is an adjective, but Dickinson chooses to capitalize it.
He stuns you by degrees – Prepares your brittle Nature For the Ethereal Blow
The capitalized words are the key words of the poem. They add weight to the lines, tipping the balance
of the poetic rhythm. The reader is invited to ponder over their meaning and significance (Miller 59).
The capitalization gives Dickinson's poems concreteness and symbolism (Miller 58). The reader's
attention is drawn to these capitalized words. They form an image in the reader's mind. For example, in
the first example, the capitalized words are Slant, Winter, Afternoons, Heft, Cathedral, and Tunes.
These words alone evoke the image of a cold and lonely day which burdens the heart like the heavy and
mournful tones of an organ. Just words "Winter Afternoons" carry sensations of frigidness, bleakness,
and loneliness. "Winter Afternoons" set the scene and describe the mood (Porter 141). The words
"Ethereal Blow" strike the reader as an oxymoron. Ethereal implies something light, delicate, and

Carol Ann Duffy Poems Analysis
Originally Introduction Memories play a significant role in the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, particularly
her recollections of childhood places and events. The poem Originally, published in The Other
Country (1990), draws specifically from memories of Duffy's family's move from Scotland to England
when she and her siblings were very young. The first–born child, Duffy was just old enough to feel a
deep sense of personal loss and fear as she traveled farther and farther away from the only place she
had known as home and the family neared its alien destination. This sentiment is captured in
Originally, in which it is described in the rich detail and defining language of both the child who has
had the experience and the adult who recalls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 'hate name' of the racists is sprayed on a 'brick wall' the harshness and unyielding nature of which
is symbolic of the mentality of those who do such things. The unfamiliar, snowy weather and artificial
'neon lights' create the impression for the immigrant that the country moved to is 'coming to bits'. This
image of fragmentation is, though, not entirely imaginary as he or she has a life splintered from all that
is familiar and constantly experiences a sense of alienation. The italicised words at the close of the
poem give voice to the immigrant but this only gives away a difficulty with English. The unfinished
verbs, 'Me not know' and 'It like they only...' are drawn attention to by Duffy in order that the reader
may ponder what it would be like to face the same language problem. The final words of the poem,
'Imagine that' remind us of the opening and there is quite a clear impression that Duffy is adopting an
undisguised didactic stance. As a skilled and empowered user of the English language herself she is
drawing attention to the lot of those who are marginalised because of their deficiency in its use. Carol

Cultural Effects on English Language Collocation as...
Abstract
In English language, there are many fixed, identifiable, non–idiomatic phrases and construction. Such
groups of words are called recurrent combinations, fixed combination or collocation. Collocation fall
into two major groups: grammatical collocation and lexical collocation.
For people who regard the English language as a foreign language or second language, it's so difficult
to express it as perfect. This mini research paper talks about Cultural Effect on English Language
Collocation as Foreign Language to help them more understanding in how to mastering English.

Strong: A large number of collocations are strong or very strong. For example, we most commonly talk
of rancid butter, but that does not mean that other things cannot be rancid.
2. Weak: These are words which co–occur with a greater than random frequency. Many things can be
long or short, cheap or expensive, good or bad. However, some things are more predictable, which
could be called collocation; for example, white wine or red wine.
3. Medium strength: These are words that go together with a greater frequency than weak collocations.
Some examples are: hold a meeting; carry out a study.
The context in which a collocation is used is important. Certain collocations or expressions are
appropriate for certain contexts. Factors such as a difference in status or a social distance between the
speaker and the hearer can affect the choice of collocational phrases. For example, we would not greet
our boss by saying How's it going?; however, it is all right to greet a friend that way. This example
suggests that knowledge of connotation and formality is important in deciding which collocation to use.
(Deveci, 2003).
Language and culture
There are many ways in which the phenomena of language and culture are intimately related. Both
phenomena are unique to humans and have therefore been the subject of a great deal of anthropological

In this textbook, materials management includes all activities in the flow of materials from the supplier
to the consumer. Such activities include physical supply, operations planning and control, and physical
distribution. Other terms sometimes used in this area are business logistics and supply chain
management. Often, the emphasis in business logistics is on transportation and distribution systems
with little concern for what occurs in the factory. Whereas some chapters in this text are devoted to
transportation and distribution, emphasis is placed on operations planning and control. Distribution and
operations are managed by planning and controlling the flow of materials through them and by using
the system's resources to achieve a desired customer service level. These activities are the responsibility
of materials management and affect every department in a manufacturing business. If the materials
management system is not well designed and managed, the distribution and manufacturing system will
be less effective and more costly. Anyone working in manufacturing or distribution should have a good
basic understanding of the factors influencing materials flow. This text aims to provide that
understanding. APICS defines the body of knowledge, concepts, and vocabulary used

What Is LGBT?
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and along with heterosexual they describe
people's sexual orientation or gender identity. These terms are explained in more detail here.
Lesbian
A lesbian woman is one who is romantically, sexually and/or emotionally attracted to women. Many
lesbians prefer to be called lesbian rather than gay.
Gay
A gay man is one who is romantically, sexually and/or emotionally attracted to men. The word gay can
be used to refer generally to lesbian, gay and bisexual people but many women prefer to be called
lesbian. Most gay people don't like to be referred to as homosexual because of the negative historical

Sexual orientation also refers to a person's sense of identity based on those attractions, related
behaviours, and membership in a community of others who share those attractions. Three sexual
orientations are commonly recognised – heterosexual, homosexual (gay and lesbian) and bisexual.
Homophobia
Homophobia refers to fear of or prejudice and discrimination against lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
It is also the dislike of same–sex attraction and love or the hatred of people who have those feelings.
The term was first used in the 1970s and is more associated with ignorance, prejudice and stereotyping
than with the physiological reactions usually attributed to a 'phobia'. While homophobic comments or
attitudes are often unintentional, they can cause hurt and offence to lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
Transphobia
Transphobia refers to fear of or prejudice and discrimination against people who are transgender or who
are perceived to transgress norms of gender, gender identity or gender expression. While transphobic
comments or attitudes are often unintentional, they can cause hurt and offence to transgender people.

Orientation (APA, 2008) and Answers to Your Questions About Transgender Individuals and Gender

Jose, IV–St. Lorenzo Ruiz "Making Inference" An Inference Defined In order to knock the verbal section of your standardized test or even the reading portion of your test in school right out of the ballpark, you need to know what an inference is, first. An inference is an assumption made based on specific evidence. We make inferences all the time in real life. For instance, your girlfriend might say to you, "Nice hair," and you could make the inference that she is being rude because she was smirking when she said it. In life, it's pretty easy to infer the implied meaning – the meaning not stated directly – because you can use context clues like body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Step 2: Trust the Passage Now that you're certain you have an inference question on your hands, and you know exactly what an inference is, you'll need to let go of your prejudices and prior knowledge and use the passage to prove that the inference you select is the correct one. Inferences on a multiple–choice exam are different from those in real life. Out in the real world, if you make an educated guess, your inference could still be incorrect. But on a multiple–choice exam, your inference will be correct because you'll use the details in the passage to prove it. You have to trust that the passage offers you the truth in the setting of the test, and that one of the answer choices provided is correct without stepping too far outside the realm of the passage. Step 3: Hunt for Clues Your third step is to start hunting for clues – supporting details, vocabulary, character's actions, descriptions, dialogue, and more – to prove one of the inferences listed below the question. Take this question, for example: Based on the information in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Usage of Punctuation Marks in Academic Writing Name: Instructor: Subject Title: Date: Usage of punctuation marks in academic writing Introduction These are symbols which indicate the organisation in written language, structure and the intonation to be observed in a sentence when it is read aloud. In the written English, It has been necessary to eliminate the ambiguity existing in a sentence. For this reason, punctuation marks have been in used to bring out the intended meaning of a sentence rather than the variations that can be gotten from it. The punctuation practice had not been embraced in fully but not long after printing was invented, many of these marks have been added till to date. It is slightly the width size of an 'n' and it is slightly long when compared to a hyphen. It is used in joining compound modifiers having open compound elements. E.g. In the New–York city, the guy was named in the latest journal produce by the leading writer. Or, He went to North Carolina–Virginia boundaries to see his fiancée who live there. Also, it is used when expressing time periods. E.g. He will be in Nigeria in the time between Jan–May this year. (b) He laid the two tables back–to–back in the van when they were as to arrange the furniture. (used as a compound word). And the last example shows the use of a hyphen between syllables of a word. i.e. When we went to our grandpa, we were able to meet with the disputed thought–full couple. A glance at the table of contents is enough to show that the sequence of chapters is erratic and closer inspection reveals that the scope of individual chapters is far wider than appears at first sight. Philosophic doctrines (which, according to the author, are the basis of the talismanic art), theory of magic, astronomical, astrological and physical lore, extensive directions for the practice of the art, and accounts of the peoples by whom it is employed are jumbled together throughout the book, with no discernible guiding principle. If a systematic arrangement is anywhere perceptible, it is in the astrological and astronomical material, though even this is far from selfcontained or methodically ordered. Subjects which belong together are separated (e.g., the geographical sections on pp.171 ff. and 394 ff.), long, discursive definitions, appearing in unexpected places, further break the sequence (e.g., pp.78 and 343)–. and there is a great deal more to make the reader's task more difficult. This manner of writing may well be intentional, whether to make the magical sections appear less suspect by interlarding them with theoretical passages, or to make certain doctrines seem less strange by administering them in small doses, or to demonstrate the equal validity of the magical and philosophical material, or for a combination of all three reasons. The topic of our report is "Office Memo: Contrast between Theoretical Concept and Actual Practice". In this report, we showed the differences as well as the similarities between theoretical concept and actual practice. At first, we gathered theoretical knowledge about the office memo such as– its layout and functions from several books. Than, we entered into the practical field and collected two samples of office memo and information about its functions from two renowned organizations. This organizations are– 1. Sonali Bank Limited 2. Social Islami Bank Limited After that, we analyzed both theoretical knowledge and practical information about memo and contrasted between the two. We mainly focused on the layout of memo, but also illustrated functions of memo. In case of Sonali Bank Limited, we found that more elaborate layout of memo are used in communication. This layout is different in many ways from the theory such as– ornamental language is used. But the layout of the memo used by Social Islami Bank is close to the theory to an extent. But in this organization, memo is used for functions that are different from the theoretical ones. Many Indians claim that it is very similar to British English, but this opinion is based on a surface level examination of lexical similarities. • 10. Essay Standard English In contemporary society the Standard variety of English is the most commonly used as it is respected and associated with a higher prestige. Its usage is also advocated by prescriptivists who believe that it is the 'correct' and only variety that should be used. Standard English is usually seen in formal settings, where its usage is necessary for official and public purposes. However, contextual factors play a vital role in determining the most appropriate variety to be used, which is supported by the Principle of Appropriateness. Certain contexts where a non–standard variety is necessary are in social media settings and in communities of different ethnicities, where they are undeniably required to create solidarity between speakers. ... A number of students also tried to make the contention that Standard English was not necessary, without appreciating the irony they were discussing the topic using Standard English. Standardisation and codification were often not well understood. Few students explored the importance of orthography and grammar in maintaining a Standard English and why these combine to create a variety of English that is understood by most of the population. The following extract provided a broad range of relevant and contemporary examples that enabled the student to provide strong evidence in support of why other varieties of English have a value and place in Australian society. There is good use of metalanguage and the paragraphing is structured and cohesive. There are many people in society, especially those with a prescriptivist attitude, who strongly believe that the Standard is 'intrinsically superior to other varieties', as stated by K Burridge. It is clear however that this is not true, when one considers the ability of ethnolects and Aboriginal English to express identity and finer nuance. Ethnolects occur when features of someone's first language or 'mother tongue' are adopted into their second language, in this case English. Features can include the phonological addition of vowel sounds to the ends of nouns e.g. bread /_/ (common to Greek and Italian); the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this sentence, there is nothing grammatically unusual or "deviant" in the way the words of the sentence are put together. However, in the following verse from a poem, the grammatical structure seems to be much more challenging, and makes more demands on our interpretative processing of these lines: ex.9–2 Four storeys have no windows left to smash But in the fifth a chipped sill buttresses Mother and daughter the last mistresses Of that black block condemmed to stand, not crash. The sentence in line 2 of this verse that starts with But in the fifth is unusual in that the predicate of the sentence is made up of a sequence of embedded elements, as we can see if we write them out in a full form: "A chipped sill buttresses mother and daughter who are the last mistresses of that black block which is condemned to stand, not crash." Furthermore, the main verb in this sentence is buttress. This word can be either a noun or a verb, but we would argue that it is more likely to occur as a noun in less literary contexes. Feedback sessions must be a beneficial experience for the student if the teacher shows the strong points as well. If the teacher tries to make comments and corrections on the final version of the student paper, the teacher would be exhausted and the student would be discouraged. One alternative can be giving feedback through the process of writing. That is, while the student is planning and organizing his ideas, the teacher can comment on the unity and coherence of ideas. Or while the student is writing his draft, the teacher can proofread for word–order, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Emily Dickinson's Capitalization and Punctuation The poetry of Emily Dickinson is one of the most recognizable of the 19th century. Dickinson's poetry stands out because of its unconventional use of capitalization and punctuation. Her poems contain capitalized words which are not normally capitalized. Her poems are noted for the frequent use of the dash. Literary scholars have attempted to interpret Dickinson's unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Some believe that it was merely part of Dickinson's penmanship (Weisbuch 73). They therefore edit Dickinson's poetry and publish them in standardized form. Others believe that the capitalization and punctuation were a conscious effort on Dickinson's part. These scholars notice the little nuances of Dickinson's dashes, such as whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Dickinson is not consistent in her capitalization (Porter 140). She does not capitalize every single noun. As demonstrated above, the word "light" is not capitalized. Furthermore, Dickinson also capitalizes words which are not nouns, as seen in lines 4 – 6 of "He fumbles at your Soul". The word "ethereal" is an adjective, but Dickinson chooses to capitalize it. He stuns you by degrees – Prepares your brittle Nature For the Ethereal Blow The capitalized words are the key words of the poem. They add weight to the lines, tipping the balance of the poetic rhythm. The reader is invited to ponder over their meaning and significance (Miller 59). The capitalization gives Dickinson's poems concreteness and symbolism (Miller 58). The reader's attention is drawn to these capitalized words. They form an image in the reader's mind. For example, in the first example, the capitalized words are Slant, Winter, Afternoons, Heft, Cathedral, and Tunes. These words alone evoke the image of a cold and lonely day which burdens the heart like the heavy and mournful tones of an organ. Just words "Winter Afternoons" carry sensations of frigidness, bleakness, and loneliness. "Winter Afternoons" set the scene and describe the mood (Porter 141). The words "Ethereal Blow" strike the reader as an oxymoron. Ethereal implies something light, delicate, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The poem Originally, published in The Other Country (1990), draws specifically from memories of Duffy's family's move from Scotland to England when she and her siblings were very young. The first–born child, Duffy was just old enough to feel a deep sense of personal loss and fear as she traveled farther and farther away from the only place she had known as home and the family neared its alien destination. This sentiment is captured in Originally, in which it is described in the rich detail and defining language of both the child who has had the experience and the adult who recalls ... The 'hate name' of the racists is sprayed on a 'brick wall' the harshness and unyielding nature of which is symbolic of the mentality of those who do such things. The unfamiliar, snowy weather and artificial 'neon lights' create the impression for the immigrant that the country moved to is 'coming to bits'. This image of fragmentation is, though, not entirely imaginary as he or she has a life splintered from all that is familiar and constantly experiences a sense of alienation. The italicised words at the close of the poem give voice to the immigrant but this only gives away a difficulty with English. The unfinished verbs, 'Me not know' and 'It like they only...' are drawn attention to by Duffy in order that the reader may ponder what it would be like to face the same language problem. The final words of the poem, 'Imagine that' remind us of the opening and there is quite a clear impression that Duffy is adopting an undisguised didactic stance. As a skilled and empowered user of the English language herself she is drawing attention to the lot of those who are marginalised because of their deficiency in its use. For example, we most commonly talk of rancid butter, but that does not mean that other things cannot be rancid. 2. Weak: These are words which co–occur with a greater than random frequency. Many things can be long or short, cheap or expensive, good or bad. However, some things are more predictable, which could be called collocation; for example, white wine or red wine. 3. Medium strength: These are words that go together with a greater frequency than weak collocations. Some examples are: hold a meeting; carry out a study. The context in which a collocation is used is important. Certain collocations or expressions are appropriate for certain contexts. Factors such as a difference in status or a social distance between the speaker and the hearer can affect the choice of collocational phrases. For example, we would not greet our boss by saying How's it going?; however, it is all right to greet a friend that way. This example suggests that knowledge of connotation and formality is important in deciding which collocation to use. (Deveci, 2003).
