2. Phoneme Segmentation
• Rationale
– After assessing my tutee using the
phonological awareness assessment, it was
apparent that she struggled with
identifying the sounds that make up a
whole word.
• Content Standards
– 1.10 Generate the sounds from all the
letters and letter patterns, including
consonant blends and long- and short-
vowel patterns (i.e., phonograms), and
blend those sounds into recognizable
words.
3. Lesson Objectives
• Identify beginning, middle and ending sounds
• Practice reading words aloud
• Be able to break a word into individual sounds
• Established Goal
– Given the 2 and 3 sound words, students will be
able to identify the number of phonemes in given
words in order to demonstrate phoneme
segmentation.
4. Lesson Procedures
• Teacher says the word. Students repeat the
word and then slide each sound into the
appropriate box with the chips or pennies.
One chip represents each individual phoneme.
Students then say the whole word to “put it
all together”.

6. Formative and Summative Assessment
• Formative
– Monitor Student Learning
• Letter Sounds, Sounding out of words
• I will record each word and make note of the
letters/words she was and was not able to identify.
• Summative
– The student is meeting the standard when they
can generate the sounds from all the letters and
blend those sounds into recognizable words.
7. Closure
• The key point of the lesson is to be able to
break each word into individual sounds.
• This main objective & standard will be
addressed at the beginning and end of the
lesson.
