Movie – Reading is Fun

    1. Purpose: The purpose of this movie is to show students why reading is important to their
lives. The presentation will describe the reasons and what things people read. The
presentation will briefly describe what people need to do to learn to read.

The following standards will be addressed:

    • Information Literacy Standard 2: the student who is information literate evaluates
        information critically and competently.

Information Literacy Standard 4: the student who is information literate uses information to
enrich understanding of career, community, health, leisure, and other personal situations. The student
constructs meaningful personal knowledge based on that information and communicates that knowledge
accurately and creatively across the range of information formats.

    2. Learner Analysis

            a. Age/Gender: The target audience consists of 20 boys and girls between the ages
                of four and five.

            b. Cultural Background: The class will consist of a mixture of African-American,
Caucasians and multi-racial students. The students’ backgrounds are varied. The
students’ socioeconomic levels range from below poverty to middle class. Most
of the students will come from single parent households. Several students will
live in a house that includes the single parent and a grandparent or just the
                grandparent.

            c. Educational Level: The students will be preparing to enter into Pre-K and will
have a wide range of abilities. There will be students can recognize some or the
entire alphabet. The other students will range from being able to recognize one or
two letters to being able to recognize the majority of the alphabet. Most of the
students will not be able to write their names and will be in the second stage of
writing which is scribbling without letter like forms. Several of the students will
have never been in any type of day care or school setting. The education level of
the parents will vary from high school drop out to college graduates.

                            • Special Needs/Accommodations: There are no special
                                accommodations for this activity.
d. Specific Entry Skills: The students must be able to sit and watch a movie for a
short period of time. The students must be able to focus on the movie. The
students must be able to process the information mentally to use the information
draw conclusions. Using the movie will promote students interest in learning to
            read.

        e. Learning Styles: At this stage the students learning styles are still developing.
However, girls in general prefer verbal and linguistic styles of learning while boys
            prefer kinesthetic activities.

        f. Motivation – Keller’s ARCS Model

Attention – The students’ attention will be gained by the introduction. The
students will be drawn in by their interest in the characters.

Relevance – The presentation will increase student’s interest reading. Many
students may not understand how important reading is their lives as it is a skill
they have not acquired yet. This movie will help students to see how reading will
            impact their lives.

Confidence – The students will be confident that the information that they are
receiving in accurate. They will be know that they can use the information to
            base new ideas on.

Satisfaction – The students will gain information about how reading will affect
their future. This will give the students the confidence of knowing that what they
are learning is important and useful.

        g. Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences – the students and their parents aren’t able to
            be surveyed at this time.

3. Objectives:

        a. When the presentation is viewed by parents, grandparents or guardians there will
be an 80% decrease in general questions about the students activities.

        b. When the presentation is viewed by the students there will be a 70% increase in
the students desire to attend school.

4. Theory of Instruction: The theory of instruction and learning that will be incorporated
into this presentation is Social-Psychological Perspective. This theory will be applied
with this presentation in the viewing of the presentation. Parents and students will view
the presentation in small groups. During and after they have watched the presentation
they will be able to discuss among themselves different aspects of the classroom and the
activities thereby allowing them to make more concrete associations in learning.
