Back issues of the LCBO Vintages Magazine are thoughtfully offered by the purveyor of fine wine and premium
spirits. Now that’s a relief. Ontario LCBO customers and dreamers will not be in a tizzy if they miss an issue of
the tempt-o-gram put out by the friendly not-in-your-neighborhood merchants.
Too bad you have to travel out of your hood into Vintages Land to get your Vintages Magazine fantasies
fulfilled. Most of us would be happy to walk to the convenience store and thrill to the sight of even a small
selection of vin ordinaire. Alas, this is not currently the case. So back we go to the Vintages Magazine for solace.
Flipping through three years of electronic versions of the LCBO Vintages Magazine is a journey to the center of
a universe in which the LCBO makes its ever-rotating Vintages collection part of their discover the world
marketing strategy. However, products from the Vintages side of the world are decidedly pricier than the vin
ordinaire on their more general store shelves.
You can be a Vintages insider and get email messages about whatever plummy, vanilla, floral, hinting of licorice
or slightly wet dog nosings you might desire. But it’s no substitute for an electronic tip toe through pages of
garrulously rapturous descriptions of their overpriced collections of Ports, Sauvignon Blanc, VQA, Icewine,
Pinot Noir, Rieslings, and Zinfandels.
What a hangover is in store for the LCBO Vintages Magazine reader when they see that it’s all about the same
thing all the time. Too much money for too little wine.
Read about the caves of Southern France, the Gewurztraminer of Germany and the lush reds of Australia and
Chile. Essentials, classics and special offers abound in the back issues of the LCBO Vintages Magazine.
You can almost taste the tangy yet caressing virtues of, well, just about any region in the world where the wines
of the month are the wines of eternity. It seems there is not a wine region they would not have you visit through
their magazine.
There’s everything from French Chateaux and Italian Villa vineyards to California terroir and back, with an
occasional magazine devoted to the VQA’s from Niagara wineries.
Most Ontarians wonder why the pricey and glossy Vintages Magazine is necessary when the LCBO is pretty
well the only avenue for wine purchase in the province. Some would use the “M” word.
In any case the LCBO Vintages Magazine is all about travel, that is, the long and winding road to the LCBO
store located in a heady stratosphere not anywhere near your mortal postal code.
