Marketing Plan KSA: Accredited Business Knowledge Company: Towson University Athletic Department (Internship) What I’ve Done: I was asked by my supervisor to create a marketing plan for the upcoming gymnastics season at Towson University. This was one of my first assignments during my internship this semester. I was asked to come up with as many creative and innovative ideas for marketing gymnastics here at Towson University as I could. I researched other gymnastics and college athletics marketing ideas and tailored them to fit Towson’s population. What it Means: This was the first project I completed on my own without any guidance from others. Creating marketing plans for athletics is something that I could see myself potentially doing one day. Doing this project changed the way I look at sports forever. I now see sports more from a marketing perspective, especially at the college level. My supervisors took my suggestions under advisement when creating the marketing campaign for gymnastics upcoming season. Where it Leads: I had always loved sports, but I had never really considered finding a job in the sports industry, that changed with this marketing plan. I quickly realized upon completing this assignment that a job in sports marketing is something I would love to do. Ideally I would love to one day develop marketing and recruiting plans for college athletics. This assignment is an example of exactly something I would be doing in a position like that. I found coming up with ideas and using the creative side of my brain very enjoyable, which is another thing I had not really gotten to do in the past.

1. Promotional Video
a. A short 30-second video of last season’s most daring and impressive
flips and tricks set to music to get people excited for the season
b. Play at halftime of football/basketball games
c. As well as in the University Union, LA Building, etc.
d. Would let those that don’t know about the gymnastics team and show
them what they are missing
2. Move fundraising event closer to or on campus
a. This would raise the level of awareness of not only the fundraiser but
for the team as well
b. Bateman’s, Green Turtle, etc.
3. Get the Towson Gymnastics Twitter page (@Towson_GYM) more involved
a. Follow more students and attempt to increase number of followers
b. The more followers the more people that will see your message
c. Integrate with other teams at Towson to create a family feeling
between athletic teams
4. Improve use of YouTube.
a. Put together highlights after each meet and upload them through
either TheTowsonTigers account or new account specifically for
Gymnastics
b. Have @Towson_GYM tweet the link to the highlights
c. Have interviews with players and coaches and upload them as well
5. Put up weekly videos detailing the lives of a member(s) of the team
a. Would give people a behind the scenes look at what its like to be a
Division 1 athlete
b. Make people feel closer to athletes and athletic department
c. *This may work better with a more prominent athlete or sport*
6. Expo on Burdick Field
a. Grab everyone’s attention
b. Let them know details about upcoming meets
7. Breast Cancer Awareness Meet
a. Donate half of proceeds to breast cancer research
b. Pink leotards
c. Honor an organization or person
d. Invite survivors to the meet with free ticket
8. Get involved with local area Gymnastics Gyms
a. Go out into community and raise level of awareness
b. Discounted tickets to young gymnasts
c. Could even do some instruction
9. Hall of Fame Day
a. Bring back all of the previous Gymnastics HOFers and honor them
10. Keep website updated
