How often have we heard politicians promising to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United
States? Perhaps I am over thinking it, but unless you're making some very expensive items it'll be
challenging to provide American workers minimum wage and put together such and keychains.
Come to think about it, there are a few really expensive items like all of Apple's products which
have low material cost and sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Those parts would be
fantastic pay workers a decent wage and to make in America. Wait, when American workers can
pay a couple of hundred dollars a month to do it overseas, why make here? And and so the
difficulty continues.
As sales manager for mill work facilities and Union store fixture I comprehend more than ever how
important labor unions are to our work force. With many Americans working harder than ever we
find many corporations cutting on shifts to less than 30 -hours so they are ineligible for health
benefits. We're becoming a nation of part time workers, which is not likely to endure us live the
American dream and to raise families.
As a result of Labor Unions which we are members of, there are lots of safeguards for us.
We often sit around and discuss the future of our kids and also the new generation to what types
of occupations will soon be available to them in regards. Technology comes up a lot.
Computers and robots have replaced many production jobs. A bottling plant to get a drink firm can
replace 100 human workers with only 2 human workers and a string of robotic stations . More
individuals jobless by technology. Robotics have been studied by many young college grads in
the expectations to develop a vocation in that area. There are businesses that are actually
designing robots capable of building robots!
Now let's get onto building! Well, I felt the exact same manner until I researched the robotics
industry and found a startling new theory: Robotic construction workers!
Yes, it is authentic, based on Science Journal, a prototype of a new robot known as "termes" has
been developed that may one day revolutionize the construction industry. The robots were
supplied by engineers with building blueprints, and then left them alone. The TERMES
constructed the structures by detecting and responding to the other robots around Engineers--
with no further instruction from humans.
Since they function independently, precisely the same construction plan could be implemented by
a dozen TERMES or a hundred of these. The prototype TERMES use specially built bricks to
construct towers, castles, and pyramids. The researchers say they may also manage simple jobs
like laying sandbags down before floodings.
Imagine construction sites where robotics replace human workers. Carpenters and construction
workers can be displaced by the robots and the websites requiring only minimum oversight.
While this technology is still in image, the reality is the fact that they have successfully created the
beginning phases of its development. While those of us middle-aged carpenters may not need to
compete with R2D2 taking over our jobs, future generations may very well have to address this
new technology that may threaten their livelihood.
My advice to those up and comers in the business....become a shop steward to help you see over
the robot workers!
There is an interesting video put out by Harvard that shows these Termes in action:
