1. We use ‘an’ before words that
• begin with a vowel sound ( a.e.i.o.u)
an aeroplane an eagle an igloo
an orange an umbrella an ice-cream
• begin with a silent ‘h’

2. We use ‘a’ before
• words that begin with consonants
a house a cup a lizard
a snake a necklace a violin
• words that begins with a vowel but do not have a vowel
sound when spoken

* to refer to a particular person, animal or thing.

• before a thing or person of which there is only one.
