Bioluminescence
is when an
organism gives off
light.
It happens when
energy is released
by a chemical
reaction.

Lantern fish have
photophores that
run along their
body. The process
of bioluminescence
uses the chemicals
luciferin and
luciferase.

4. When?
There can be a
different times that
a lantern fish can
glow. During
mating season
lantern fish glow.
When they are
communicating
they glow too.

5. Why?
Lantern fish use
their special gift for
many reasons. They
can attract mates,
communicate, and
blend into their
surroundings.
