Counselling
Task 1: Describe the purpose and nature of counselling The function of personal counselling is to
help people to resolve problem areas in their life. Counselling provides an opportunity for the person
to explore the difficult feelings, thoughts and behaviours that have blocked the way to satisfying
relationships, personal happiness. The purpose of counselling is to help clients achieve their
personal goals, and gain greater insight into their lives. One hopes that by the end of this process one
will be more satisfied with his or her life. Counselling is not a process where the counsellor tells the
client what he or she should do or decides choices for the client to make. Rather it is an opportunity
for the client to come to a greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Counselling is based on trust and honesty where the counsellor offers to client unconditional respect
and regard without being judgemental. Working in a confidential setting, counselors listen
attentively to their clients and offer them the time, empathy and respect they need to express their
own feelings, and perhaps understand themselves from a different perspective, thereby reducing
their confusion and enabling them to make changes in their life if they decide to do so. 2,
Responsibilities to all clients: Counsellors take all reasonable steps to avoid harm to their clients as a
result of the counselling process, they faced with situations which extend the boundary of their
competence seek supervision and consider referral to other professionals. In the event of harm
resulting from counselling, counsellors take responsibility for restitution. Professional indemnity
should be considered. They are responsible for setting and maintaining professional boundaries
within the counselling relation. 3, maintaining competent practice: Practitioners are responsible for
ensuring that they have training in the use of counselling skills and that this training is appropriate
and sufficient for the counselling work they undertake. They are responsible for working within the
limits of their competence. Both practitioners and the organisations for whom they work have a
responsibility for monitoring and developing the practitioner's

Bowenian Family Therapy
The goal of each session is to manage anxiety and increase the client's level of differentiation,
incorporating "I–statements" (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 227). The evaluation interview
begins with a telephone call between a combination of family members (Goldenberg, Goldenberg,
2013, p. 223). A therapist is to remain neutral and avoid being triangled into family issues. Sessions
focus on symptoms in relation to the presenting problem (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 223).
The counselor gages each member's perspective of the issue, while remaining aware of patterns of
emotional functioning (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 223). Sessions conclude with intentions to
understand third–generation family systems. This part of the technique ... Show more content on

Bohlinger (n.d.) states, "The Bowenian therapist would work to impart three important lessons to
their clients: self–determination, self–advocacy, and re–engaging with the self in relationship"
(Bohlinger, n.d.). The structural therapist is interested in boundaries between the client and the
others around them, as oppose to the client's intrinsic self. (Bohlinger, n.d.). Bowenian therapists
work to help clients maintain and balance relationships, unlike the experimental therapist, who
confronts the client on strengths and weaknesses, in hopes that they will accept both aspects of
individuality (Bohlinger, n.d). Also, Bowenian therapy is interested in "historical" processes, instead
of historical emotions and problems (Bohlinger, n.d.). An interesting aspect of Bowenian therapy is
the lack of termination. Bowen believed differentiation is an ongoing process, unlike majority of
family therapies (Walsh, Harrigan, 2003, p.

Career Analysis : Career Counseling
Career Counseling Theory
It appears that the most appropriate model of career counseling would depend on how much insight
the client has, their stage of development, their age and cultural background, and their career and
developmental maturity. All of an individuals life experiences, their personal and career goals and
aspirations for the present and future will affect their choices regarding career development. There
are differing opinions on which factors play the most important role in career development. For the
purpose of this paper I will focus on Donald Super's developmental theory, as well as his life–span,
life–stage model, and integrate narrative career counseling that has proven effective in my own
personal career choices. Narrative career counseling helped me narratively construct my career
decisions through my knowledge, experiences and what I found to be meaningful. The process of
narrative counseling includes clients revealing facts about their past and present career development,
and their design for the future (Hughs, Gibbons & Mynatt, 2012). Evaluating how a client interacts
with their environment and choices made, narrative career counseling is an active approach to learn
about them through these interactions. The client's story, or narrative, usually begins with a difficult
situation or transition, and leads into the middle stage that includes obstacles preventing a move
forward toward their goal and the instruments that can be utilized to reach their

Essay about Discrimination Model of Supervision
CASE STUDY
Supervision Case Study
Deirdre Cotter Garfield

CASE STUDY The discrimination model of supervision developed by Bernard & Goodyear,
(1998) has three primary focus areas in training novice counselors these include use of intervention,
what the supervisee is doing in the session that is observable, conceptualization or how the session
work is being conducted and the level of understanding the supervisee has regarding client themes
and application of specific counseling session interventions, and personalization, the supervisors
own approach or method. This model embeds three essential supervisory roles, teacher, counselor

Another approach to use in the teacher role would to initiate videotaping some sessions. Reviewing
his audiotape seems to elicit increased anxiety, by moving to videotaping a session the supervisor
could actually observe Michael in the counseling session and could reinforce skills used with the
client, build upon strengths and identify challenges to receive additional training in. Using videotape
allows for the review of nonverbal communication, client incongruence, or lack of synchrony
between the client and the supervisee to be recognized (Erford,2010). This supervision provides
increased focus for Michael to receive feedback on his approach while allowing review
systematically the delivery of services. Using the counselor role in supervision will provide an
opportunity to increase his competencies while also recognizing that Michael is at the beginning of
his clinical internship experience and his academic lens must now evolve into practical theoretical
applications and developing competencies. Assuring him will also be important to reduce his
verbalized insecurity, by exploring his affective insecurity and any defensive reactions, which may
interfere in his self awareness and growth as a counseling professional( Stenack & Dye,1982).
It is also important in this case to learn more about Michaels own personal and cultural experiences

Becoming A Licensed Professional Counselor
Robert F. Kennedy, brother of president John F. Kennedy, is quoted saying, "Each time a man stands
up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a
tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring
those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and
resistance." Throughout my life certain events whether they be high or lows, triumphs or failures,
have shaped my desire to earn a Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in pursuit
of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. In August of 2011 I was blessed to become the
small group leader of fifteen high school freshman girls. Each one of my fifteen girls had a face and
each of those faces had a story to tell. In Grace Baptist Church 's Youth Ministry, small groups are
the primary way that we connect with our students. The mission of our small groups are to create a
safe and welcoming environment where the students can grow in their relationships with Jesus and
each other. In order to accomplish these goals I am responsible for mentoring my group of girls on a
weekly basis. I meet with them twice a week for two hours at a time. By starting with this group of
young women as freshman in high school and continuing with them through their senior year I was
able to form trustworthy bonds with each one of them. During my second year as a leader one of my
girls, we will

The Characteristics Of Jesus Christ And The Counseling World
The world is full of counselors, therapists, psychologist, and many more mental help specialists but
what can be difficult is attempting to discover what makes a counselor great. It can be agreed upon
that some of the characteristics that make up a great counselor include, but are not limited to:
empathy, compassion, being nonjudgmental, trust, confidentiality, and commitment. These are all
traits of Jesus Christ who is referred to as the Great Counselor. It has taken the mental health
industry decades to even begin to reach the place Jesus reached in His three years of ministry. By
comparing Jesus and the counseling world one can see why Jesus is referred to as the Great
Counselor and where the counseling world does well in helping individuals but still falls short.
Throughout the Bible we hear Jesus refered to as the Great Counselor, that He is the Messiah, the
Great Healer. The Bible does not merely claim this but later shows the statements to be true during
Jesus' ministry. While Jesus was alive on this earth He was criticized for who He chose to spend
time with tax collectors and sinners, the rejects of the society and although Jesus was seen as above
them He did not judge them. Instead He says to the Pharisees questioning Him in Mark 2:13–17,
"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the
righteous, but sinners" (New International Version). This passage is clearly referring to salvation but
it can also be taken

Characteristics and Behaviors of Effective Counseling
Characteristics and Behaviors of Effective Counseling In order for the counseling process to be
effective for the client the characteristics and behaviors of the mental health counselor must be
effective. To be an effective mental health counselor the process must include both the art and
science of helping clients when they struggle. This paper will address both effective and ineffective
characteristics of the given transcript along with an explanation of how a counselor's characteristics
or behaviors influence a session with a client.

Reflecting with the client during a session is very important to make sure the counselor and client is
both on the same thought.
Characteristic Two The second statement of the counselor that was a good characteristic was when
he stated "Great. That is a good start. Let's talk some more about where that frustration comes
from." (Laureate Education, Inc., 2012). The counselor used an open–ended question to allow the
client to give an answer with a more elaborate answer than just yes or no. Also the counselor was
supportive of the client's choice to focus on himself at this point in his counseling. According to
Cooper (2010) "open questions will allow for a more meaningful response and give more control to
the client." If a client is guarded in their responses open–ended questions will allow them to disclose
what they feel comfortable disclosing without them feeling so pressured to give information.
Ineffective Characteristics Effective skills will help to improve the relationship between the
counselor and the client. When these skills are ignored or not used the relationship will suffer.
According to Healing Path Counseling (2013) some ineffective characteristics for communication
include giving minimal responses, going blank, and being indirect. In order to overcome being
ineffective a professional

The Goals And Interventions Of The Strategic Family Therapy
Strategic family therapy developed in the 1950s, by the works of Gregory Bateson, Jay Haley, Don
Jackson, and John Weakland. Also, known as the "Palo Alto group" from the Mental Research
Institute (Murdock, 2017). Several key identifying concepts of this therapy are to solve client
problems, achieve family goals, change individual dysfunctional and problematic behaviors. The
strategic family therapy targets self–sustaining changes in the family environment. Goals and
Interventions The Goals and interventions of the Strategic family therapy will apply to Ana's case
because the primarily goals of therapy are to change family dynamics to eliminate or reduce risk
taking behaviors. For example, this therapy may bring Ana unconscious thoughts to the conscious
level, if she allows the counselor to explore her communication with her family and husband. Ana
will experience this though several interventions of the therapy, such as reframing and restructuring.
Ana will also experience this through problem solving patterns and her transition into being a
mother.
Theory Duration:
The strategic family therapy can be done in 8 to 24 sessions. But Szapocznik, believe that the
therapy lasts over three months for 12 to 24 sessions. The duration of this theory is brief and short
term in the counselling process because it is problem focused. This strategic family therapy
approach will be in sequence with Ana's insurance restriction because they have authorized her to
complete eight

For this project, I am placing myself in a hypothetical context as a staff pastoral counselor at my

overarching goal for life to serve others in the capacity for which the Lord has gifted me and

Pastoral–As leaders of the church, pastors are in a position to offer soul care and counseling to their
congregation. Equipped with theological understanding coupled with education and experience in
counseling, pastors are uniquely qualified to offer support in the realm of mental health.
Counseling–Purposeful conversations between the counselor and the counselee, resulting in clear,
realistic expectations of the outcome of the sessions.
Confidentiality: Confidentiality is a core ethical requirement regarding information shared between
the counselee and the counselor. Counseles can be assured that information shared in sessions will
be held to the strictest confidence; however, counselees must be made aware that there are instances
where the counselor is required to break confidentiality. Information shared by the counselee
regarding actual or threatened harm to self or others must be reported to the proper authorities.
Homework: There may be take–home assignments for the counselee to complete between sessions.
Homework is a useful tool and may include outside readings, observations, journaling, worksheets,
etc.
Note–taking: The counselor may take notes during sessions. These notes will remain confidential
and most often consist of positive comments or ideas that the counselor wishes to incorporate based
on input from the counselee.
Termination: The termination process will begin to take place during session 4, at which time the
counselee will be

Legal & Ethical Issues with Advertising and Online Counseling
Since the end of World War 2, the technology one sees around them and uses everyday has grown
exponentially. In the field of counseling, phones, fax machines, copiers, and computers are all used
to run everyday operations and transfer information. Despite how great technology can be, ethical
issues can arise because of it. For example, talking on the phone with a client in a crisis situation can
create a condition in which confidentiality can be breeched. (McMinn, 1999).
One new way in which technology has been used to extend the services of the counseling field is
through online counseling. According to Corey (2011), online counseling can be beneficial because
some consumers want brief and anonymous therapy, some clients who are ... Show more content on

LaCombe's online counseling business and advertising.
The first ethical issue with this online counseling venture is the fact that it is labeled as an online
counseling program for people in crisis, but one does not need to provide their name to get therapy.
This breaks two ethical codes found in the American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics
(2005). The first one is ACA: A.1.a which cites that as a counselor, one is responsible for the welfare
of the client's and promoting that welfare. The second one is A.12.c which states that counselors
should avoid using technology assisted counseling services when it would be better or more
appropriate to use face to face services (ACA, 2005). If a suicidal individual goes on Dr. LaCombe's
site and let's their online therapist know, how is said therapist supposed to get that individual help if
they do not know their name? In addition, it may be more appropriate to help people in crisis in
person as opposed to over the internet.
Secondly, according to Corey (2011), many online counseling providers do not have an intake
procedure, a confidentiality waiver, or informed consent write up. Dr. LaCombe's site does not have
an intake procedure or confidentiality waiver. Her website has some aspects of informed consent
such as a statement about live counseling versus online counseling and payment. That said she does

What Makes Me Different? Essay
If one were to ask what makes me different, I think the most distinctive characteristic I possess is the
diversity of experiences I have encountered. One scene has remained vivid in my mind as my
undergraduate years have gone by, and it involves a situation with my father. It was a bright and
sunny August afternoon, a perfect move–in day for my new room on Dutch Quad. The car was filled
to capacity, with clothes, shoes, bins, and school supplies and we were on our way to campus. While
on the highway, I noticed my dad trembling. Drivers behind us on the highway were flashing their
lights and driving past our windows with anger. Still driving, his hands started to shake and he
would let them off the wheel, as tears started to roll down his eyes. I realized that he was going
through an episode. "Dad, pull over for a second." "No, I've got to get you to school." In that
moment, I was fearful, yet having been rather recently informed that my dad was diagnosed with
bipolar disorder, it ignited something in me that I couldn't explain at the time, but I am now fully
aware of. I told him again, firmly, "Dad, please pull over for a second" and I felt as though he could
see in my eyes, the love I had for him. He finally pulled over and I embraced him. I then got in the
driver's seat, having only passed my road test two days prior, and drove the rest of the way to
Albany where I then made sure he got the appropriate medical attention needed. I visited him every
day while simultaneously

Why I Chose to Become a Mental Health Counselor Essay
Why I chose to become a mental health counselor
Counseling others is a difficult job that requires people to listen, take notes, and respond in ways
that are positive and helpful. It is important that trust be built between the counselor and the patient
so that the patient will feel comfortable speaking about issues that are private or embarrassing.
There are many different types of counselors including drug counselors; marriage counselors, grief

their lives in different ways. Counselors are trained to offer advice and listen to issues that may be

They help people address aging problems or emotional and mental health issues. Often working
with a group, they counsel individuals and their families dealing with drug or alcohol addictions.
The counselor helps their clients prevent and rectify conflicts or problems. A mental health
counselor gets his or her information through observations, interviews and tests so they can decide
the best course of action to help their client. Some of the other professionals they work closely with
when necessary are psychologists, family and marriage workers, psychiatric nurses, school
counselors, psychiatrists, and social workers. Many counselors choose to specialize in specific areas
or with certain age groups like substance abuse or teenagers.
A mental health counselor often helps their clients make positive choices and changes due to the
decisions and insights they help facilitate. Many counselors work in hospitals with psychiatric
patients or with mentally ill adults in continued day treatment programs. Some choose private
practice or practice in counseling centers, government agencies, and corporations and youth homes.
They usually work in pleasant and comfortable surroundings, working a standard workweek. Some
counselors are available weekends or evenings for the convenience and needs of their clients.
Mental health counselors are an extremely valuable part of the healthcare system.

Integrative Approach For Counseling And Its Effects On...
Integrative Approach to Counseling
Key Concepts
The central idea in an integrative approach to counseling is one of a patient's ability to affect their
life through the choices they make. William Glasser suggests most people's unhappiness stems from
the lack of meaningful relationships, and most relationships are either successful or a disaster based
on the choices we make (Corey, 2013). Patients are able to positively or negatively impact their
mental well–being by making choices that deepen their interpersonal relationships.
Expanding on Glasser's ideas, existentialism and the choices it offers, gives an individual the
opportunity to experience freedom. They are no longer tied to a deterministic view of life, but are
instead given license to create the life they wish to have, unencumbered by the weight of societal,
cultural, or familial expectations (Corey, 2013).
Both choice theory and existentialism closely mirror ideas taught in Protestant Christianity: people
are free to make choices about their behavior and lifestyle, and all choices have an outcome. That
outcome can be positive (salvation), or negative (damnation). If one believes the rules as explained
in the Bible, the outcome of one's life rests in their choices.
Counselor's role
In most cases, the counselor will best serve their client by taking on a "not–knowing" role in the
relationship, allowing the client to become the expert in their own lives (Corey, 2013).

Existential counselling is a philosophical form of counselling which addresses the situation of a
person's life and situates the person firmly within the predictable challenges of the human condition.
Existential counselling considers human living to take place within four dimensions: physical,
social, psychological and spiritual. It shows each of these dimensions to be constituted like a force
field, within which predictable paradoxes, tensions and dilemmas play out. Human beings can learn
to deal with these tensions and conflicts more effectively by facing up to the negatives as well as the
positives of their lives, including the tensions of life and death, love and hate, strength and weakness
and meaning and absurdity. Best known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We may even choose actions that cause harm to ourselves or to others. Reflecting on these
behaviours, with the help of a psychologist, gives us insight into the reasons we chose these actions
and helps us to learn from our mistakes and make better choices in the future. You do not need to be
an 'existentialist' to benefit from existential therapy; you need only a desire to be happier and a
willingness to reflect upon how your choices are part of the solution. Existential Therapy is an
approach to counselling that helps us to understand ourselves, other people and the world we all
inhabit together. Existential Therapy helps people to build confidence that they are making good
choices. Existential Therapy is not reserved solely for people who suffer from severe psychological
problems; it is for everyone who is having trouble making a good decision when they experience the
kind of challenges issued by life. Existential Therapy provides an opportunity to explore the world
including the dreams, fantasies and spiritual dimensions of our existence. Talking about it helps to
identify dilemmas, develop a strategy to deal with them and then grow from the experience. Irvin

Consider What Exactly Makes a Good Counselor.
In an essay of 2500 words, consider what exactly makes a good counselor.
Counseling is a process where a person tries to assist another person to be able to handle his or her
problems. A counselor is not just there to give advice; it is also based on mutual trust and
understanding. Counseling is an opportunity for us to help people to mentally adjust to different
situations.
A good counselor should display sincerity, good listening skills and be able to assist people in
gaining a better understanding of themselves and their problems. A good counselor above all should
be really interested in the person and their problems. Insincerity is very easy for most people to
detect and makes the counseling sessions less effective. A good and sincere ... Show more content

Hearing comes naturally, but listening well does not always come naturally. Clients seem to trust
those they think have listened and have tried to understand them. We should always watch what our
body language is sending out to our client, we should also be very careful of what comes out of our
mouths, and the verbal communication, which is exchanged between us, and the client. We can
easily give our clients false hopes or damage their self–confidence by one misunderstood word.
Another thing, a good counselor should always keep the clients sessions confidential. What ever is
said to us should be kept confidential and should not be past on to a third party, there are exceptions
depending on age of the person, mental state, and the nature of conversation being held which can
warrant us passing on confidential information to a third party. Boundaries should always be set
from the beginning so both of us know how far we can go and what's acceptable and what is
unacceptable.
'Characteristics of a good counselor'
As a counselor we need to gain trust from our clients, a client will not open up and go into any detail
or area bothering them if they have no trust in the counselor.
All counseling skills acquired will be next to worthless without a degree of trust from the client.
To be effective as a counselor we need to earn the trust from the client. As counselors we need to use
a mixture of skills to be effective. These skills

Counselor´s Record Keeping System Essay
A clear, well–organized record–keeping system is essential for counselor who provides treatment,
nutritional assessment and consultation services. But setting up such systems can be challenging.
For one, a counselor need to attack the fine balance between the need to maintain client privacy and
confidentiality and the need to communicate with insurers, other treating professionals and larger
health systems. Counselor's records must also follow the state and federal laws (King & Klawitter,

For counseling to continue, insurance information needs to be on file making sure that co–payments

she will have to provide the correct information and any payments that are not made yet.

A Child With Developmental Delays
When Mia was only two–years–old, her parents noticed that she was not up to speed with other
children her age. This discovery led her to the genetics department at A.I. DuPont Children's
Hospital. For a child with developmental delays, I only saw that she lit up the room with her energy
and friendly nature, which made me fall in love with her as she explored the room. While the
counselor consulted her parents, Mia continued to come up to me and grab my hands, something
that she apparently did quite frequently. During the appointment, her mother began to cry, worried
that she may have inadvertently caused Mia's condition during pregnancy. Her father had concerns
that his first child may never be able to live a normal life and have children of her own. The
counselor eased the parents' concerns by educating them on her syndrome and basic genetics as well

Psychology, Theology, And Spirituality
The book "Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christianity Counseling" by Mark R. McMinn
(2011) is an informative read that delves into the issues of practically integrating concepts of
psychological counseling in the Christian context. Some of the questions that McMinn (2011)
aspires to address in the book include whether it is appropriate to pray with clients, the role of
confession during the therapy process, whether counselors should use scripture memory during the
interventions as well as the role of forgiveness and sin during the counseling therapies. The author
also looks at the secret spiritual life pursued by Christian counselors. Indeed, as the author vividly
points out, the value of counseling interventions especially in the Christian context relies more upon
the character of the individual rather than one's theoretical orientation or technical training
(McMinn, 2011).
Through exhibiting a positive character, Christian counselors and psychologists can learn spiritual
discipline, which gradually transforms them and increases their likelihood of reflecting the
redemptive capacity, humility, forgiveness and compassion found in Christ. Through finding this
spiritual disciple, Christian counselors can be in a better position to offer their services to
disgruntled clients. The author acknowledges that despite the enormous healing potential of
scripture, counselors seldom use it during counseling interventions. Hence, according to McMinn
(2011), depending on the

Limitations Surrounding Online Counseling
With the limitations surrounding online counseling, the cousnselor may lack the ability to meet a
client's immediate or crisis needs in the same way that face–to–face therapy can. In particular, online
services that have delayed communication may not respond to a client quickly enough to assist them
in a meaningful way (Finn and Barak 2010). In addition, when a client does have immediate needs,
communicating through text lacks the same type of empathy that can be conveyed in face–to–face
interactions (Richards and Vigano 2013). Consequently, people utilizing online counseling may not
feel supported to in the same way when it comes to urgent or crisis situations, as they would be if
they were utilizing traditional services. Despite possible

Advice From A Friend As A Therapist Essay
Advice to Counselors–in–Training Amongst the advice that she shared with me, there were a few
key components of advice that really stood out me to me. Upon asking Stephanie about any times
she felt threatened as a therapist she shared of it being a good practice to have a personal protocol
that enables you to talk clients down or to deflect and break out of a physical hold. She maintains
that as a counselor, it is important to, "fall back on listening to your gut if something feels wrong.
You don 't have to justify it. Set a boundary. Your intuition is your best friend as a therapist." I found
this invaluable advice and I felt so ready with confidence to serve. If there is a situation that
becomes inappropriate, Stephanie advises not to feel bad about it or make a big deal out of it. If it is
violating the contract, I have a right to move them along. She then shared something that I found to
be so profound, "Don't let the paperwork scare you. You don 't know anyone unless you 're with
them". She has found that the people she felt would be frightening are some of the "coolest" people
and that a lot of people just need someone to protect and feel safe and protected by and then they are
devoted to you for life. You just have to maintain that you are a safe person with the words that you
use. Reflection Stephanie also shared that like her, I would grow to unlearn the things I've have
taught myself. She advised that boundaries are good. The hard thing for

legal and ethical considerations that serve as a guidelines during interventions. These suggestions

If Manuel's answers demonstrate imminent danger, emergency services should be called
immediately and all information gathered from the initial conversation should be documented.
For the purposes of this paper, an assumption that Manuel is not in immediate danger is made, and
he chooses to sign a written contract stating that he will not make any attempt on his life before
having another discussion with a counselor. While a written contract cannot guarantee that Manuel
will not choose to harm himself during this period, adolescents who sign this type of contract will
typically comply. At this point, a follow–up meeting is scheduled, which will allow time to consider
the assessment information in formulating the scope of the problem, and provide intervention
strategies for Manuel's continued treatment (McWhirter et al., 2017).
Consultation and Supervision In order to provide Manuel with the best therapeutic approaches,
colleagues should be consulted, who are willing to question the intervention strategies from not only
a therapeutic perspective, but also keeping in mind ethical and legal guidelines (McWhirter et al.,
2013). One method of consultation that is proving to be helpful is the formation of consultations

allows clients and professionals to communicate over the internet without having to communicate in

counseling in which the clients will feel more comfortable and less intimidated.
On the other hand, clients are more likely to be open and honest when communicating through

Before beginning the online process, each client has to fill out an online questionnaire. Once
Jacqueline receives the client's questionnaire, she will then review it and provide suggestions.
Clients can e–mail her as many times as they would like. Furthermore, if a client wants to
communicate over the phone, then Jackie will prepare a different schedule for the clients in which it
is a different process than the online process ("Marriage Matters, LLC – Online Counseling", 2013).
Additionally, Jackie provides online counseling that allows clients to work with their spouses
through online interaction. In general, Jackie believes that online counseling works because clients
are able to get assistance quickly about their main concerns. Nevertheless, Jackie feels that she
provides a concrete understanding and provides suggestions and recommendations that will help
clients to clarify, resolve, or improve the situation that is present. Jackie strives at working with
many clients by providing follow–up clarification and explanations if need be. This will help clients
to improve their lives and be able to move forward in life without any obstacles. Furthermore, Jackie

I am writing this letter to you as I am very concerned about Richard not getting the counseling that

Richard was not present at his first court–appointed therapist appointment yesterday. Rich called
minutes before the appointment start time and told the counselor, Stephen Kavanagh L.M.H.C., that
the bus was running late and rescheduled the 1:30pm weekly appointment to the following week at

to weekly counseling appointments with Richard but unilaterally changed the weekly appointments
to bi–weekly appointments at 2:30pm without any input or consideration of myself, when the

Premarital Counseling Essay
What is Premarital Counseling?
Premarital Counseling is defined as a type of therapy that helps couples prepare for marriage and it
is often provided by a licensed therapist. Therapist is known as a marriage or family therapist. There
are also the options of seeking counseling through your religious institution if that works better for
you and your future spouse (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2013) .
How to prepare for Premarital Counseling?

Doing so will strengthen you and your spouse's relationship prior to marriage and perhaps get some
things in check first. Premarital counseling also teaches communication and conflict resolution
techniques. This will help to increase the level of marital satisfaction. It is also found/suggested that
greater communication skills reduce the risk of divorce. The counseling should also bring up
discussions that are vital to a couple's relationship. Whatever these things are they should be hatched
out before so there are no surprises in the relationship. These issues may be minor or major
depending on what's discussed. This may be a time to sort out like gender roles, expectations, and
finances most importantly. Premarital counseling is basically making you aware of strengths and
growth areas therefore insuring a happy and long future together as one (Stebbins, 2011; Duncan,
Childs & Larson, 2010).
Types of Premarital Counseling
As stated earlier there are various approaches to premarital preparation simply because there are
some many different types of people to connect to the different approaches offered (Duncan, Childs
& Larson, 2010). Furthermore there has been no significant evidence that says that any one
approach is more effective than others (Duncan, Childs & Larson, 2010). So based on information

Ethical Issues In Counseling Profession
During this week, there were two events that took place that awaken my awareness of how
dangerous the counseling profession is if one doesn't pay close attention to clients/patients and
follow all rules and regulations (state, federal, ethical). There was a patient admitted to the floor that
was extremely agitated in the ED. He was found "dangling" off a local bridge and brought in TDO
by the police. The patient slept for the first few hours after being admitted to the floor from the ED.
When he woke up, he was agitated and began to pace the floor. There was another patient, a 4 foot 9
female, that had been verbally aggressive towards other patients and staff. While the male patient
was pacing the floor, the female patient was verbally aggressive towards another patient and the
male patient assumed she was talking to him. He immediately became physically aggressive towards
the patient by lifting her and slightly throwing her against the wall. At that moment, the staff called
the appropriate code for security to arrive. Once security arrived, he became even more ... Show

I explained to her that I have seen similar events; however, it was with adolescents. I have

of the patients. During that time, all the patients were either crying from being scared, angry at the
aggressive patients, psychotic, or smelly. There was on patient in the room that started masturbating
while staring at me. At that moment, I left the room and went to the staff and told them that I needed
a break. I told them to imagine being in a small room with 12 patients, some psychotic, angry,
and/or angry, and one male patient masturbating while starring you down. Gratefully, they

Title: Ethical Vignette
Abstract
In this paper I will discuss the ethical vignette as it deals with confidentiality and ethical dilemmas
that counselor's face. I will reflect on a video presentation as well as the North Carolina rules and

confidentiality is important and what the rules says about it. This will help me and others to become

Next I looked at what ACA code of Ethics mandates that we do concerning these matters. In Section
B.1.c counselor has to respect the rights of all clients to confidentiality and cannot share the
information without client consent or without legal or ethical justification. Also in Section C.2.e and
f states that the Counselors should take reasonable steps to consult with other counselors or related
professionals when they have questions regarding their ethical obligations or professional practice
and they must take continuing education so that they can maintain reasonable levels of awareness.
Response
My reaction to the video at first was "This is a long video" then I began to really listen to what they
were talking about and reflect on what they were saying and how it applies to me right now. I began
to change my thought process on how serious this really is. Now believe me I know how important
it is because I work in the field every day, but it made me want to make sure that I'm doing the right

The Benefit Of Options In Therapy
Some people make appointments to see their therapist in person, others choose online counseling.
As a counselor and therapist who offers both, my experience is that neither is better or worse than
the other, they are just different. Each approach to therapy has its own advantages and benefits.
When There is No 'Body Language', the Focus is on the Therapy
Some people have an idea that because online counselors will not see body language, they are at a
disadvantage in their job and may not be as effective as face–to–face counselors. But how
significant is 'body language' when considered against what is being said and heard? Online
therapeutic conversations actually have the potential to be more focused than a discussion between

We have already covered how the different approaches to online therapy have their own advantages
that may outweigh 'body language' and other specific disadvantages in some situations. In terms of
the risks or other concerns, I think it is important to point out that internet based therapy makes
counseling and therapeutic support possible for many people who would not otherwise be prepared
to engage with a therapist.
A lot of people who have consulted me through online appointments might not have even tried
counseling if the online options were not available. Should these people be denied access to
counseling just because they are not prepared to sit down in an unfamiliar space with a stranger they
have never met?
Online counseling and therapy are inevitably the direction that much therapeutic practice will take in
the future. Internet based talk therapy has the potential to help many people because it is
comfortable, private and actually does put the consumer back in

The Integrative Intervention Model Of Child Based Play
"Many traditional family therapists often exclude small children from the therapeutic process"
(Wehrman & Field, 2013). Although therapists may feel as though conducting a session with
children present can be challenging, it is strongly encouraged to do so. The integrative intervention
model of child–based play is an effective method in which therapists should use when treating
families. Recent research concludes that the "integration of children and families involved in
counseling will benefit the family when all family members are present" (Wehrman & Field, 2013).
Results of this method of therapy provide therapeutic change for families in their communication
and relationships. Examples of play–based activities that can be used in ... Show more content on

As a result of these behaviors, sessions may be unproductive. Child and parental involvement in
counseling produce positive family dynamics and increase the communication skills within families.
The "current movement in the counseling profession is to combine family counseling and play
therapy so that all members of the family benefit from creative, therapeutic interventions"
(Wehrman & Field, 2013). Creativity allows the family to be engaged with one another. As stated
previously, there are several play–based activities counselors can use in family therapy. Puppets and
dolls symbolize a family member's reality or fantasy in which they act out scenes that portray what
they are feeling. Expressive art is used to create pictures illustrating the perspectives individual
family member. The integrated model provides many advantages for children. Play–based activities
encourage children to work through their thoughts and feelings. Children are more likely to
participate in the process when given toys rather than sitting on the couch. Another advantage is that
it "offers the child a powerful way of mastering his or her world and is crucial to cognitive
development, personality formation, and social adaptation" (Wehrman & Field 2013). Play itself is
important in child development. With the addition of play in therapy, children will be able to lean
and develop even more. Counselors can apply there skills while interacting with children.

Crisis Counselor: A Case Study
Crisis can occur on a personal or societal level. When a person experiences personal trauma their
experience of a situation or event can leave them feeling as though they have exhausted his/her
coping skills, self–esteem, power and social support. These can be situations where a person is
making suicidal threats, experiencing threat, witnessing homicide or suicide, or experiencing
personal loss. While a person is experiencing a crisis on the individual level it is important for
counselors to primarily assess safety. Societal or mass trauma can occur in a number of settings and

Counselling provides an opportunity for the person to explore the difficult feelings, thoughts and behaviours that have blocked the way to satisfying relationships, personal happiness. The purpose of counselling is to help clients achieve their personal goals, and gain greater insight into their lives. One hopes that by the end of this process one will be more satisfied with his or her life. Counselling is not a process where the counsellor tells the client what he or she should do or decides choices for the client to make. Rather it is an opportunity for the client to come to a greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Counselling is based on trust and honesty where the counsellor offers to client unconditional respect and regard without being judgemental. Working in a confidential setting, counselors listen attentively to their clients and offer them the time, empathy and respect they need to express their own feelings, and perhaps understand themselves from a different perspective, thereby reducing their confusion and enabling them to make changes in their life if they decide to do so. 2, Responsibilities to all clients: Counsellors take all reasonable steps to avoid harm to their clients as a result of the counselling process, they faced with situations which extend the boundary of their competence seek supervision and consider referral to other professionals. In the event of harm resulting from counselling, counsellors take responsibility for restitution. Professional indemnity should be considered. They are responsible for setting and maintaining professional boundaries within the counselling relation. 3, maintaining competent practice: Practitioners are responsible for ensuring that they have training in the use of counselling skills and that this training is appropriate and sufficient for the counselling work they undertake. They are responsible for working within the limits of their competence. • 6. Bowenian Family Therapy The goal of each session is to manage anxiety and increase the client's level of differentiation, incorporating "I–statements" (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 227). The evaluation interview begins with a telephone call between a combination of family members (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 223). A therapist is to remain neutral and avoid being triangled into family issues. Sessions focus on symptoms in relation to the presenting problem (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 223). The counselor gages each member's perspective of the issue, while remaining aware of patterns of emotional functioning (Goldenberg, Goldenberg, 2013, p. 223). Sessions conclude with intentions to understand third–generation family systems. This part of the technique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bohlinger (n.d.) states, "The Bowenian therapist would work to impart three important lessons to their clients: self–determination, self–advocacy, and re–engaging with the self in relationship" (Bohlinger, n.d.). The structural therapist is interested in boundaries between the client and the others around them, as oppose to the client's intrinsic self. (Bohlinger, n.d.). Bowenian therapists work to help clients maintain and balance relationships, unlike the experimental therapist, who confronts the client on strengths and weaknesses, in hopes that they will accept both aspects of individuality (Bohlinger, n.d). Also, Bowenian therapy is interested in "historical" processes, instead of historical emotions and problems (Bohlinger, n.d.). An interesting aspect of Bowenian therapy is the lack of termination. Bowen believed differentiation is an ongoing process, unlike majority of family therapies (Walsh, Harrigan, 2003, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Career Analysis : Career Counseling Career Counseling Theory It appears that the most appropriate model of career counseling would depend on how much insight the client has, their stage of development, their age and cultural background, and their career and developmental maturity. All of an individuals life experiences, their personal and career goals and aspirations for the present and future will affect their choices regarding career development. There are differing opinions on which factors play the most important role in career development. For the purpose of this paper I will focus on Donald Super's developmental theory, as well as his life–span, life–stage model, and integrate narrative career counseling that has proven effective in my own personal career choices. Narrative career counseling helped me narratively construct my career decisions through my knowledge, experiences and what I found to be meaningful. The process of narrative counseling includes clients revealing facts about their past and present career development, and their design for the future (Hughs, Gibbons & Mynatt, 2012). Evaluating how a client interacts with their environment and choices made, narrative career counseling is an active approach to learn about them through these interactions. The client's story, or narrative, usually begins with a difficult situation or transition, and leads into the middle stage that includes obstacles preventing a move forward toward their goal and the instruments that can be utilized to reach their ... • 10. Essay about Discrimination Model of Supervision CASE STUDY Supervision Case Study Deirdre Cotter Garfield Walden University CASE STUDY The discrimination model of supervision developed by Bernard & Goodyear, (1998) has three primary focus areas in training novice counselors these include use of intervention, what the supervisee is doing in the session that is observable, conceptualization or how the session work is being conducted and the level of understanding the supervisee has regarding client themes and application of specific counseling session interventions, and personalization, the supervisors own approach or method. This model embeds three essential supervisory roles, teacher, counselor and consultant in providing effective supervision. The teacher's primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another approach to use in the teacher role would to initiate videotaping some sessions. Reviewing his audiotape seems to elicit increased anxiety, by moving to videotaping a session the supervisor could actually observe Michael in the counseling session and could reinforce skills used with the client, build upon strengths and identify challenges to receive additional training in. Using videotape allows for the review of nonverbal communication, client incongruence, or lack of synchrony between the client and the supervisee to be recognized (Erford,2010). This supervision provides increased focus for Michael to receive feedback on his approach while allowing review systematically the delivery of services. Using the counselor role in supervision will provide an opportunity to increase his competencies while also recognizing that Michael is at the beginning of his clinical internship experience and his academic lens must now evolve into practical theoretical applications and developing competencies. Assuring him will also be important to reduce his verbalized insecurity, by exploring his affective insecurity and any defensive reactions, which may interfere in his self awareness and growth as a counseling professional( Stenack & Dye,1982). • 12. Becoming A Licensed Professional Counselor Robert F. Kennedy, brother of president John F. Kennedy, is quoted saying, "Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." Throughout my life certain events whether they be high or lows, triumphs or failures, have shaped my desire to earn a Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in pursuit of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. In August of 2011 I was blessed to become the small group leader of fifteen high school freshman girls. Each one of my fifteen girls had a face and each of those faces had a story to tell. In Grace Baptist Church 's Youth Ministry, small groups are the primary way that we connect with our students. The mission of our small groups are to create a safe and welcoming environment where the students can grow in their relationships with Jesus and each other. In order to accomplish these goals I am responsible for mentoring my group of girls on a weekly basis. I meet with them twice a week for two hours at a time. By starting with this group of young women as freshman in high school and continuing with them through their senior year I was able to form trustworthy bonds with each one of them. During my second year as a leader one of my girls, we will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Characteristics Of Jesus Christ And The Counseling World The world is full of counselors, therapists, psychologist, and many more mental help specialists but what can be difficult is attempting to discover what makes a counselor great. It can be agreed upon that some of the characteristics that make up a great counselor include, but are not limited to: empathy, compassion, being nonjudgmental, trust, confidentiality, and commitment. These are all traits of Jesus Christ who is referred to as the Great Counselor. It has taken the mental health industry decades to even begin to reach the place Jesus reached in His three years of ministry. By comparing Jesus and the counseling world one can see why Jesus is referred to as the Great Counselor and where the counseling world does well in helping individuals but still falls short. Throughout the Bible we hear Jesus refered to as the Great Counselor, that He is the Messiah, the Great Healer. The Bible does not merely claim this but later shows the statements to be true during Jesus' ministry. While Jesus was alive on this earth He was criticized for who He chose to spend time with tax collectors and sinners, the rejects of the society and although Jesus was seen as above them He did not judge them. Instead He says to the Pharisees questioning Him in Mark 2:13–17, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners" (New International Version). This passage is clearly referring to salvation but it can also be taken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Essay Characteristics and Behaviors of Effective Counseling Characteristics and Behaviors of Effective Counseling Characteristics and Behaviors of Effective Counseling In order for the counseling process to be effective for the client the characteristics and behaviors of the mental health counselor must be effective. To be an effective mental health counselor the process must include both the art and science of helping clients when they struggle. This paper will address both effective and ineffective characteristics of the given transcript along with an explanation of how a counselor's characteristics or behaviors influence a session with a client. Reflecting with the client during a session is very important to make sure the counselor and client is both on the same thought. Characteristic Two The second statement of the counselor that was a good characteristic was when he stated "Great. That is a good start. Let's talk some more about where that frustration comes from." (Laureate Education, Inc., 2012). The counselor used an open–ended question to allow the client to give an answer with a more elaborate answer than just yes or no. Also the counselor was supportive of the client's choice to focus on himself at this point in his counseling. According to Cooper (2010) "open questions will allow for a more meaningful response and give more control to the client." If a client is guarded in their responses open–ended questions will allow them to disclose what they feel comfortable disclosing without them feeling so pressured to give information. Ineffective Characteristics Effective skills will help to improve the relationship between the counselor and the client. When these skills are ignored or not used the relationship will suffer. According to Healing Path Counseling (2013) some ineffective characteristics for communication include giving minimal responses, going blank, and being indirect. • 18. The Goals And Interventions Of The Strategic Family Therapy Strategic family therapy developed in the 1950s, by the works of Gregory Bateson, Jay Haley, Don Jackson, and John Weakland. Also, known as the "Palo Alto group" from the Mental Research Institute (Murdock, 2017). Several key identifying concepts of this therapy are to solve client problems, achieve family goals, change individual dysfunctional and problematic behaviors. The strategic family therapy targets self–sustaining changes in the family environment. Goals and Interventions The Goals and interventions of the Strategic family therapy will apply to Ana's case because the primarily goals of therapy are to change family dynamics to eliminate or reduce risk taking behaviors. For example, this therapy may bring Ana unconscious thoughts to the conscious level, if she allows the counselor to explore her communication with her family and husband. Ana will experience this though several interventions of the therapy, such as reframing and restructuring. Ana will also experience this through problem solving patterns and her transition into being a mother. Theory Duration: The strategic family therapy can be done in 8 to 24 sessions. But Szapocznik, believe that the therapy lasts over three months for 12 to 24 sessions. The duration of this theory is brief and short term in the counselling process because it is problem focused. This strategic family therapy approach will be in sequence with Ana's insurance restriction because they have authorized her to complete eight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Confidentiality: Confidentiality is a core ethical requirement regarding information shared between the counselee and the counselor. • 25. Legal & Ethical Issues with Advertising and Online Counseling Since the end of World War 2, the technology one sees around them and uses everyday has grown exponentially. In the field of counseling, phones, fax machines, copiers, and computers are all used to run everyday operations and transfer information. Despite how great technology can be, ethical issues can arise because of it. For example, talking on the phone with a client in a crisis situation can create a condition in which confidentiality can be breeched. (McMinn, 1999). One new way in which technology has been used to extend the services of the counseling field is through online counseling. According to Corey (2011), online counseling can be beneficial because some consumers want brief and anonymous therapy, some clients who are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... LaCombe's online counseling business and advertising. The first ethical issue with this online counseling venture is the fact that it is labeled as an online counseling program for people in crisis, but one does not need to provide their name to get therapy. This breaks two ethical codes found in the American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics (2005). The first one is ACA: A.1.a which cites that as a counselor, one is responsible for the welfare of the client's and promoting that welfare. The second one is A.12.c which states that counselors should avoid using technology assisted counseling services when it would be better or more appropriate to use face to face services (ACA, 2005). If a suicidal individual goes on Dr. LaCombe's site and let's their online therapist know, how is said therapist supposed to get that individual help if they do not know their name? In addition, it may be more appropriate to help people in crisis in person as opposed to over the internet. • 27. What Makes Me Different? Essay If one were to ask what makes me different, I think the most distinctive characteristic I possess is the diversity of experiences I have encountered. One scene has remained vivid in my mind as my undergraduate years have gone by, and it involves a situation with my father. It was a bright and sunny August afternoon, a perfect move–in day for my new room on Dutch Quad. The car was filled to capacity, with clothes, shoes, bins, and school supplies and we were on our way to campus. While on the highway, I noticed my dad trembling. Drivers behind us on the highway were flashing their lights and driving past our windows with anger. Still driving, his hands started to shake and he would let them off the wheel, as tears started to roll down his eyes. I realized that he was going through an episode. "Dad, pull over for a second." "No, I've got to get you to school." In that moment, I was fearful, yet having been rather recently informed that my dad was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it ignited something in me that I couldn't explain at the time, but I am now fully aware of. I told him again, firmly, "Dad, please pull over for a second" and I felt as though he could see in my eyes, the love I had for him. He finally pulled over and I embraced him. I then got in the driver's seat, having only passed my road test two days prior, and drove the rest of the way to Albany where I then made sure he got the appropriate medical attention needed. • 31. Integrative Approach For Counseling And Its Effects On... Integrative Approach to Counseling Key Concepts The central idea in an integrative approach to counseling is one of a patient's ability to affect their life through the choices they make. William Glasser suggests most people's unhappiness stems from the lack of meaningful relationships, and most relationships are either successful or a disaster based on the choices we make (Corey, 2013). Patients are able to positively or negatively impact their mental well–being by making choices that deepen their interpersonal relationships. Expanding on Glasser's ideas, existentialism and the choices it offers, gives an individual the opportunity to experience freedom. They are no longer tied to a deterministic view of life, but are instead given license to create the life they wish to have, unencumbered by the weight of societal, cultural, or familial expectations (Corey, 2013). Both choice theory and existentialism closely mirror ideas taught in Protestant Christianity: people are free to make choices about their behavior and lifestyle, and all choices have an outcome. That outcome can be positive (salvation), or negative (damnation). If one believes the rules as explained in the Bible, the outcome of one's life rests in their choices. Counselor's role In most cases, the counselor will best serve their client by taking on a "not–knowing" role in the relationship, allowing the client to become the expert in their own lives (Corey, 2013). Existential counselling is a philosophical form of counselling which addresses the situation of a person's life and situates the person firmly within the predictable challenges of the human condition. Existential counselling considers human living to take place within four dimensions: physical, social, psychological and spiritual. It shows each of these dimensions to be constituted like a force field, within which predictable paradoxes, tensions and dilemmas play out. Human beings can learn to deal with these tensions and conflicts more effectively by facing up to the negatives as well as the positives of their lives, including the tensions of life and death, love and hate, strength and weakness and meaning and absurdity. Reflecting on these behaviours, with the help of a psychologist, gives us insight into the reasons we chose these actions and helps us to learn from our mistakes and make better choices in the future. You do not need to be an 'existentialist' to benefit from existential therapy; you need only a desire to be happier and a willingness to reflect upon how your choices are part of the solution. Existential Therapy is an approach to counselling that helps us to understand ourselves, other people and the world we all inhabit together. Existential Therapy helps people to build confidence that they are making good choices. Existential Therapy is not reserved solely for people who suffer from severe psychological problems; it is for everyone who is having trouble making a good decision when they experience the kind of challenges issued by life. Existential Therapy provides an opportunity to explore the world including the dreams, fantasies and spiritual dimensions of our existence. Talking about it helps to identify dilemmas, develop a strategy to deal with them and then grow from the experience. • 35. Consider What Exactly Makes a Good Counselor. In an essay of 2500 words, consider what exactly makes a good counselor. Counseling is a process where a person tries to assist another person to be able to handle his or her problems. A counselor is not just there to give advice; it is also based on mutual trust and understanding. Counseling is an opportunity for us to help people to mentally adjust to different situations. A good counselor should display sincerity, good listening skills and be able to assist people in gaining a better understanding of themselves and their problems. A good counselor above all should be really interested in the person and their problems. Insincerity is very easy for most people to detect and makes the counseling sessions less effective. Clients seem to trust those they think have listened and have tried to understand them. We should always watch what our body language is sending out to our client, we should also be very careful of what comes out of our mouths, and the verbal communication, which is exchanged between us, and the client. We can easily give our clients false hopes or damage their self–confidence by one misunderstood word. Another thing, a good counselor should always keep the clients sessions confidential. What ever is said to us should be kept confidential and should not be past on to a third party, there are exceptions depending on age of the person, mental state, and the nature of conversation being held which can warrant us passing on confidential information to a third party. Boundaries should always be set from the beginning so both of us know how far we can go and what's acceptable and what is unacceptable. 'Characteristics of a good counselor' As a counselor we need to gain trust from our clients, a client will not open up and go into any detail or area bothering them if they have no trust in the counselor. This discovery led her to the genetics department at A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital. For a child with developmental delays, I only saw that she lit up the room with her energy and friendly nature, which made me fall in love with her as she explored the room. While the counselor consulted her parents, Mia continued to come up to me and grab my hands, something that she apparently did quite frequently. During the appointment, her mother began to cry, worried that she may have inadvertently caused Mia's condition during pregnancy. Her father had concerns that his first child may never be able to live a normal life and have children of her own. • 43. Psychology, Theology, And Spirituality The book "Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christianity Counseling" by Mark R. McMinn (2011) is an informative read that delves into the issues of practically integrating concepts of psychological counseling in the Christian context. Some of the questions that McMinn (2011) aspires to address in the book include whether it is appropriate to pray with clients, the role of confession during the therapy process, whether counselors should use scripture memory during the interventions as well as the role of forgiveness and sin during the counseling therapies. The author also looks at the secret spiritual life pursued by Christian counselors. Indeed, as the author vividly points out, the value of counseling interventions especially in the Christian context relies more upon the character of the individual rather than one's theoretical orientation or technical training (McMinn, 2011). Through exhibiting a positive character, Christian counselors and psychologists can learn spiritual discipline, which gradually transforms them and increases their likelihood of reflecting the redemptive capacity, humility, forgiveness and compassion found in Christ. Through finding this spiritual disciple, Christian counselors can be in a better position to offer their services to disgruntled clients. The author acknowledges that despite the enormous healing potential of scripture, counselors seldom use it during counseling interventions. Hence, according to McMinn (2011), depending on the ... Upon asking Stephanie about any times she felt threatened as a therapist she shared of it being a good practice to have a personal protocol that enables you to talk clients down or to deflect and break out of a physical hold. She maintains that as a counselor, it is important to, "fall back on listening to your gut if something feels wrong. You don 't have to justify it. Set a boundary. Your intuition is your best friend as a therapist." I found this invaluable advice and I felt so ready with confidence to serve. If there is a situation that becomes inappropriate, Stephanie advises not to feel bad about it or make a big deal out of it. If it is violating the contract, I have a right to move them along. She then shared something that I found to be so profound, "Don't let the paperwork scare you. You don 't know anyone unless you 're with them". She has found that the people she felt would be frightening are some of the "coolest" people and that a lot of people just need someone to protect and feel safe and protected by and then they are devoted to you for life. I will explain why confidentiality is important and what the rules says about it. This will help me and others to become a better counselor. Next I looked at what ACA code of Ethics mandates that we do concerning these matters. In Section B.1.c counselor has to respect the rights of all clients to confidentiality and cannot share the information without client consent or without legal or ethical justification. Also in Section C.2.e and f states that the Counselors should take reasonable steps to consult with other counselors or related professionals when they have questions regarding their ethical obligations or professional practice and they must take continuing education so that they can maintain reasonable levels of awareness. Response My reaction to the video at first was "This is a long video" then I began to really listen to what they were talking about and reflect on what they were saying and how it applies to me right now. I began to change my thought process on how serious this really is. Now believe me I know how important it is because I work in the field every day, but it made me want to make sure that I'm doing the right things the way that they are supposed to be done. • 70. The Benefit Of Options In Therapy Some people make appointments to see their therapist in person, others choose online counseling. As a counselor and therapist who offers both, my experience is that neither is better or worse than the other, they are just different. Each approach to therapy has its own advantages and benefits. When There is No 'Body Language', the Focus is on the Therapy Some people have an idea that because online counselors will not see body language, they are at a disadvantage in their job and may not be as effective as face–to–face counselors. But how significant is 'body language' when considered against what is being said and heard? Online therapeutic conversations actually have the potential to be more focused than a discussion between therapist and client in the same room. The distractions of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We have already covered how the different approaches to online therapy have their own advantages that may outweigh 'body language' and other specific disadvantages in some situations. In terms of the risks or other concerns, I think it is important to point out that internet based therapy makes counseling and therapeutic support possible for many people who would not otherwise be prepared to engage with a therapist. A lot of people who have consulted me through online appointments might not have even tried counseling if the online options were not available. Should these people be denied access to counseling just because they are not prepared to sit down in an unfamiliar space with a stranger they have never met? Online counseling and therapy are inevitably the direction that much therapeutic practice will take in the future. Internet based talk therapy has the potential to help many people because it is comfortable, private and actually does put the consumer back in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. My Interview At Christian Brothers University My Interview The person I interviewed for this assignment was Professor Steve Rivera. He is a professor at Christian Brothers University (CBU). Mr. Rivera is the department chair for the adult program and the department chair in the psychology department for CBU. He has a bachelor's degree, –EdD in Counseling Education Supervision, and is a Licensed School Counselor. The interview took place in Mr. Rivera's office at Christian Brothers on June 17, 2016 at approximately 1:30 P.M. We decided to meet there due to the limited time we had since he had summer classes later on that day. Even though Mr. Rivera had a desk in his office, he set two chair aside for the interview so we could be face to face instead of him being on one side of the desk and me on the other. His approach told me that he was very excited and motivated to help me with this project. After going to the MSU counseling center and emailing the only counselors that could be available, I could not arrange an interview with any of them. Not finding anybody in Starkville I called the counseling center at the University for Women in Columbus, MS only to find out that both of the counselors there were already booked for our class. A conversation about my project then started between a close friend of mine that goes to CBU. I mentioned that I had not been able to find an available counselor to interview. To my luck she mentioned that her professor from the previous semester was a counselor. She gave me his contact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. The Integrative Intervention Model Of Child Based Play "Many traditional family therapists often exclude small children from the therapeutic process" (Wehrman & Field, 2013). Although therapists may feel as though conducting a session with children present can be challenging, it is strongly encouraged to do so. The integrative intervention model of child–based play is an effective method in which therapists should use when treating families. Recent research concludes that the "integration of children and families involved in counseling will benefit the family when all family members are present" (Wehrman & Field, 2013). Results of this method of therapy provide therapeutic change for families in their communication and relationships. Examples of play–based activities that can be used in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result of these behaviors, sessions may be unproductive. Child and parental involvement in counseling produce positive family dynamics and increase the communication skills within families. The "current movement in the counseling profession is to combine family counseling and play therapy so that all members of the family benefit from creative, therapeutic interventions" (Wehrman & Field, 2013). Creativity allows the family to be engaged with one another. As stated previously, there are several play–based activities counselors can use in family therapy. Puppets and dolls symbolize a family member's reality or fantasy in which they act out scenes that portray what they are feeling. Expressive art is used to create pictures illustrating the perspectives individual family member. The integrated model provides many advantages for children. Play–based activities encourage children to work through their thoughts and feelings. Children are more likely to participate in the process when given toys rather than sitting on the couch. Another advantage is that it "offers the child a powerful way of mastering his or her world and is crucial to cognitive development, personality formation, and social adaptation" (Wehrman & Field 2013). Play itself is important in child development. With the addition of play in therapy, children will be able to lean and develop even more. Counselors can apply there skills while interacting with children. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
