The novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding is about a group of British schoolboys whose plane crashes on a deserted island where the
only survivors are the kids. In the novel, the writer shows the conflicts between different types of society. These young boys are faced with the

The next symbol, Jack, stands for savagery. Jack started on the island as the head of a small choir and left as the chief of a savage tribe. Jack's
tribe believed that hurting and killing was a better way to control a society rather than rules and reasoning. Jack begins to become savage when he

To make the mask a little more interesting I have created two flaps that cover the mask except for the two eye sockets. On the flaps you will see a
map of the island with much detail and color to represent the luscious landform and will provide the feeling of what's going on inside the island

of the Flies, by William Golding is a very important and analytic novel about how even the most innocent of people have the capacity for evil. It is
part of Golding's underlying theme that everyone has the capacity for evil, even innocent English boys. The boys represent the fragility of society. This
can be shown in the events in which the conch shell is included throughout the story. There are several protruding events that clearly show how the
conch represents order and society, and how fragile society is. Thus, Golding uses the conch to symbolize the fragility of society as when they found it
order was established, once they start to ignore it, society starts to deteriorate, and once it shatters order and society are gone.

followed the rule that allows the holder to speak freely. Grudgingly, the people listened to the chief to keep themselves alive, because he was a

When the boys first start a fire on top of the mountain, Piggy holds the conch and attempts to speak. But Jack scolds him by saying, "The conch
doesn't count on top of the mountain, so you shut up" (Golding 39). Boys like Jack begin to place restrictions on the conch and lose respect for it
and for one another. Then one day at an assembly, Jack places even less importance on the conch excluding more of the boys and weakening the
equal order and authority that the conch provides. Jack says, "We don't need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things...It's time some
people knew they've got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us" (Golding 92). Jack's statement here clearly connects the end of the
conch to a change in the social order. Jack is slowly becoming a power–hungry dictator, and the orderly influence of the conch is replaced by man's evil
desires. In the end, the conch loses significance to all but Piggy, and most of the boys turn into evil savages. Piggy tells Ralph to call an assembly,
and Ralph only laughs. Finally, after Piggy' glasses are stolen, Piggy tells Ralph, "Blow the conch, blow as loud as you can." The forest echoed; and
birds lifted, crying out of the treetops, as on that first morning ages ago" (Golding 154). Piggy believes that the authority of the conch will once again
bring the boys together, but only four boys meet in this assembly. The rest have joined Jack's savage tribe.

This diorama showcases the first meeting the boys have in Lord of the Flies after crashing onto the island, one of the most important meetings they
will have. Ralph, "the boy with fair hair...", sits on the large log that runs "parallel to the beach, so that when Ralph sat he faced the island but to the
boys was a darkish figure against the shimmer of the lagoon" (pg. 7, 77). He also holds the conch, being the one who fished it from the water and the

As already stated, this is when Ralph is voted in as chief, giving him control over the boys. Also, this is when Ralph makes one of his biggest
blunders, giving Jack control over the hunters. Both of these events are very important to later events in the story, notably when Jack leaves the
tribe to form his own and his hunters follow. However, that is not the only reason this scene is important. This scene is great to use to see how far
the boys have lost civil manners. Just a day after, or maybe less, after the crash, they still are civilized and it would be crazy to call them savages.
They even voted on chief instead of one of them just taking over. Therefore, we can compare the events later in the book to this scene to see how far
they have lost civil manners. Although Jack lost the chance to be voted chief later in the book once they are back from the search for the beast, it
doesn't stop him from just ignoring the vote and forming his tribe. Compare that to when he accepts the vote in this scene, despite losing, and it shows
they no longer respect authority or the rules that help keep civilization together, making this scene very useful to compare to later

Symbolism is key to understanding Golding's Lord of the Flies that had been called the best book of the century or "The most influential novel...since
salinger's catcher in the rye" by time magazine. This novel is indeed a very reputable one that everyone should read. However, in order to do that the
reader must understand the symbolism used many times thought the novel. Thought, the novel the conch is one of the few major symbolic objects that
changes drastically and meaningfully during the duration of the novel. As soon as the reader is introduced to the first major characters in this

Piggy acts as a conscience when rumors of ghost and monsters are spread, and he ends the gossip by explaining ghosts are not logical or scientific,
meaning they do not exist. Piggy uses his smarts to make sundials for the boys to keep track of the time, and with RalphВ’s combination of

element that brought the boys together was the conch shell. One of the main characters, Ralph, used the conch shell to call anyone else who is on the

Hence, Ralph is evaluating the situation and the children 's response by holding up the conch. The children respond, "Let him be chief with the
trumpet–thing" (Golding, 22). Clearly, Ralph is using the conch to establish authority on the island.
In the second place, Ralph uses the conch to discipline the children on the island. Golding writes, "They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly
because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority" (59). Indeed, this clearly demonstrates established
authority, and the children obey Ralph because he displays leadership ability. The children see the conch as a powerful instrument, worthy of reverent
obedience. Ralph further introduces discipline by using the conch to silence the children when he wants to address them at the meeting. Golding
writes, "Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence" (23). To clarify, Ralph holds up the conch, indicating that he displays the conch as a symbol
of his demand for obedience. Golding says, "there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the
conch" (22). Once again, the conch in this case commands respect and establishes obedience.
In the third place, the conch inaugurates civility amongst the children. As an example, during one of the meetings, Jack silently requests to hold the

In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, three significant symbols throughout the novel include the conch shell, the beast, and the Lord of the Flies.
These symbols not only aided in the development of the characters but also in their rescue. By the time the boys are rescued the meaning of each
symbol has either been diverted or given a new interpretation.
When the group of boys first arrived at what they believed was a desolate island the conch shell was one of the first things they discovered. Not
only used as a form of unification, the conch shell became a tool used to keep order. It placed a system, similar to democracy, in effect for the boys.
The conch shells' sole purpose was to mimic the role of a microphone: in the sense that at group meetings the conch was to be held by each speaker.
This system allowed everyone an equal chance to speak their thoughts while remaining uninterrupted.
Throughout the novel, however, the value of the conch shell begins to disintegrate. The conch shell emulates structure among the boys, and without
it, the boys begin to lose their rationality. In chapter five even Ralph begins to realize the value of the conch shell is in danger. He is worried if he
tries to reassemble a disbanded meeting that the boys will ignore him and forget the importance the conch shell holds. As time on the island begins to
pass the value of the once almighty conch loses more and more significance. When Ralph visited Jack's newly established camp that's when the other
boys completely disregarded any authority the conch shell once possessed. Finally, in chapter eleven when
