Super Bowl III took place at the historic Orange Bowl in
Miami, Florida, on January 12, 1969. The game saw the
11-3 New York Jets of the American Football League
(AFL) take on the National Football League’s (NFL) 13-1
Baltimore Colts. The Colts, led by quarterback Johnny
Unitas, were heavily favored to win the game. However,
after a scoreless first quarter, Jets running back Matt
Snell managed a four-yard touchdown run to give New
York a 7-0 lead at intermission.
3. SUPER BOWL III
Jets kicker Jim Turner continued to press the New
York advantage with a pair of field goals in the third
quarter. After a third field goal to open the fourth
quarter, the Jets found themselves up 16-0 and on
the cusp of victory. With just over three-and-a-half
minutes remaining in the game, Baltimore running
back Jerry Hill finally broke Baltimore’s scoring
drought. The Colts managed to recover an onside
kick and progress to the New York 19-yard line after
three completed passes by Unitas. The Jets held the
Colts to three incomplete passes from that point,
reclaiming the football on downs and securing a 16-7
Super Bowl victory.
