4. Industry Profile Fluorspar is a mineral
composed of calcium and
fluorine and is used for a
variety of metallurgical,
chemical and ceramic
processes. They are also
sometimes cut into gems to
be used in ornamental
objects. China, Mexico and
Mongolia are the largest
fluorite producers in the
world.
Global Fluorspar Market: Snapshot
The demand in the global market for fluorspar
is anticipated to increment at a moderate
CAGR of 2.7% during the forecast period of
2017 to 2025, reaching a valuation of
US$1,860.8 mn by the end of 2025, up from its
evaluated worth of US$1,505.3 mn in 2016.
Growing demand for fluorochemical,
escalating requirement of aluminum and steel
as a result of prospering construction sector,
and increasing usage of fluorspar in Li-ion
batteries are some of the key factors
augmenting the demand in the global
fluorspar market. On the other hand,
environmental concerns and collective efforts
to reduce the usage of fluorocarbon chemicals
are two hindrances faced by this market.
6. Substitutes
• Fluorosilicic acid is used to produce aluminum fluoride (AlF3), but
because of differing physical properties, AlF3 produced from FSA is not
readily substituted for AlF3 produced from fluorspar.
• Fluorosilicic acid has been used to produce HF, but this practice has not
been widely adopted.
• Synthetic fluorspar could potentially be recovered by the Department of
Energy’s two depleted uranium hexafluoride conversion plants in
Paducah, KY, and Portsmouth, OH.
• However, the preferred product is currently aqueous HF rather than
fluorspar. Aluminum smelting dross, borax, calcium chloride, iron oxides,
manganese ore, silica sand, and titanium dioxide have been used as
substitutes for fluorspar fluxes.
