Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness that affects central vision and the ability to see fine details. AMD is progressive and primarily affects those over 50, with deposits accumulating beneath the retina in early stages. There are two advanced forms: wet AMD, where new blood vessels break through the retina and cause rapid vision loss; and dry AMD, where retinal cells in the central retina die off in a expanding area. Wet AMD can be treated through eye injections that block VEGF-A and new blood vessel growth, while there is currently no treatment for dry AMD.
