Health Facts, India

 World’s biggest democracy with 1.21 billion population
  (17% of world’s population)
 But… 21% of the world’s global burden of disease
 One of the highest rates of TB

 Life expectancy: 64yo M/ 67yo F
 Greatest burden of maternal, newborn and child deaths
  in the world
 High probability of dying before 5yo
 Country with one of the worst sanitation
Child Mortality

 Probability of dying under five (per 1000): 61%
    PNA, prematurity, diarrhea
Causes of death
HIV and TB
                   India Globally

TB HIV

         malaria

Water and Sanitation
A subjective
analysis
Poop
“Popping a squat”
Benefits of Squatting
 Digestive diseases and sciences published study in 2003
 Sitting requires more effort than squatting
 Compared straining forces and strength of defecation effort during normal
         BM
 Time from sensation of defecation until time of satisfactory bowel emptying
 Objective measurement of intensity of defecation

 Squatting helps straighten the angle of the rectum
 More incidences of developing chronic traumatic hiatal hernia (and
     GERD) when not squatting
But….

not many people in India have access to these
advantageous “squat johns” (toilets/latrines)
Health Achievements

 Decreasing infant mortality rate, maternal mortality ratio
 though both are highest among the BRICS countries
 BRICS countries: newly industrialized countries with large,
     fast-growing economies
 Advances and progress towards Polio Eradication
 Bettering economy (part of BRICS) so opportunity to
dedicate more national budget to sanitation and
  healthcare
Turmeric Red Chilies

           Drinks and Food–
           “Peena and Khana”
             Chai, Ginger, Cloves,
             Turmeric, and more!
Dranks

 Chai with fresh Ginger
 Relieves sore throats and cold, Decreases nausea and gastric distress
 antioxidants and other polyphenols that
help reduce inflammation and provide pain relief
 AND it has aphrodisiacal properties! ;D
 Chai with Cloves: high in Mg, Vit C and Vit K
 Chai with Cardamom: better digestion of fats and soothes mucus
membranes, helps with gallstones, kidney stones, acid reflux
 Buttermilk: vit B2 and B12, K+, digestive aid (probiotic), low fat
  and high calcium
 Coconut water:
    cytokinins with anti-aging, anti-carcinogenic and anti-thrombotic effects
 Bioactive enzymes that help with digestion and metabolism
    Potassium and vitamin C
Indian Food – DELISH!

 Lentils: legume family
 Proteins like isoleucine and lysine
 Fiber, folate, vitamin B1, iron
                                                            Daal
 Paneer: cottage cheese (milk curdling)
 Rich in protein, easy to digest, high in calcium and
     helps with osteoporosis
    Promotes weight loss

               Saag Paneer
Turmeric: Curcumin family
A study published in the journal Arthritis and
Rheumatism showed that this orange spice reduced joint
  swelling in arthritic rats

UCLA studies show curcumin is given to aging mice and the
beta-amyloid plaques that coat the brain that lead to
  Alzheimer’s

 Red chilies (Mirchi): capsaicin family
 University of Tasmania 2006 research positive effect on
      subjects’ insulin levels (anti-diabetic)
     Vitamins A, B, C and phytonutrients
 Inhibits growth of E. coli, pseudomonas solanacearum, and
      bacillus subtilis
 Weight management (significant in 1-2 years)
 Increased energy expenditure (by about 50kcal/day), increased
         lipid oxidation, and reduced appetite
 Regular consumption reduced abdominal adipose tissue

Editor's Notes

  1. “ In Spring 2000 world population estimates reached 6 billion; that is 6 thousand million . This map (map on right) adjusts each country to reflect the proportion of tis population that lives on less than $2/day. Population is very weakly related to land area. However, Sudan which is geographically the largest country in Africa, has a smaller population than Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and Tanzania.” “ Note how India and China, both countries with large population have a large area on the map. However, note the relative size of sites in Africa, whose population is considerably less dense.” <http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=233>
  2. As seen on this map, there is a markedly increased proportion of death due to infection in the developing world. A considerable amount of this is related to HIV/AIDS, especially in Sub-Saharan africa. Not just cause of death, but of morbidity: - We estimated that stunting, severe wasting, and intrauterine growth restriction together were responsible for 2·2 million deaths and 21% of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for children younger than 5 years (Black 2008) (***double check) http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=233
