The final Architectural Design Project is built on the theme ā€œSustaining Humanitiesā€, introducing Architecture for people, place
and time. People experience architecture through the sense of place which is built over time. The nation of threading these
three entities together through careful and site specific design, one must learn to understand the historical qualities of the site
as well as its immediate environment, its identity and diversity of the community that inhabits the area. Concepts relating to
sustainability are to be induced within the details of architectural considerations whilst applying suitable technologies for the
design to be realized.
Understanding the site context and the targeted user group is the key to designing site-specific architecture. With that in
mind, site investigations are carried out as a group, both in a marco and micro scale to consider the positive impacts this pro-
posed building might bring to the users. Targeted user groups are drawn out simultaneously with primary design intentions,
along with planning of programmes to reply to this.

The Culture and Innovation Centre will serve as the Muar Cityā€™s cultural landmark and public activity center. The project calls for
a design that adhare to main criteria, appreciation of city/townā€™s and innovativeness; exhibit the ingenuity and craftmanship
of the people and teach the visitors and the younger about what they need to know about the city.
The cultural and innovation centre in order to adhare with the site, both tangible and intangible factors of the site area to be
explored. From there, the programme and function of the cultural hub can be defined. In conjunction to that, the buildingā€™s
performance, feasibility, sustainability, builldability are to be taken care of as well, to produce a legible design scheme.
With the given brief, the building must not larger than 2000 sq.mts. and not lesser than 1800 sq.mts. built-in a minimum of 3
levels maximum 5 levels which inclued the covered circulation spaces. Basement parking does not count in floor area and level
requirements. Fully open spaces, landscaping and others are not to be included in area calculation.

01 To design spaces that will effectively to show case and promote the culture of Muar City.
02 To align design, which will create a positive impact to the immediate neighborhood, more engaging and inviting hance,
encourge people to stay and explore.
03 To respect and positively affect site and neighboring places with it is highly engaging design. Where in designed public areas
serves as a platform to engage people thru exhibition, workshop and other type of activities.
04 The architecture or the design can be iconic image to the city and a cultural landmark.
05 To incorporate an element of sustainability and green in design, educating people about the importance of healthy living
and environment. Likewise as a representation of the cityā€™s credibility as the cleanest tourist city in Asean region.
06 Design should comply with pertinent guidelines and regulations. Compliance with buildability, safety and building require-
ments.
07 Design that will incorporate new means of making cultural centers more relevent and enticing for locals of todayā€™s gener-
ation and tourists who visit the country.

Jalan Maharani represents itself as an ā€˜Adaptiveā€™ community, a slow and peaceful town just along the river side. It is currently
a R&R stop surrounding with Muar Municipal Council (MPM) at both sides and old shophouses at the opposite of the road. The
site is granted with an excellent view towards the Muar River.

of the inland river edges. The system helps manage
the pepper and gambir plantations.

After the World War II, Muar acted as an adminstra-
tive town for the Japanese.
Gambir leaves are used for leather tanning before
chemicals replace its use.

Traffic infrastructure altered due to the bridge. Jalan
Maharani redirected into a one-way road.
Catalyst for change in the town of Muar, as the
bridge allows easy access. Travellers can now head
to their destination without stopping by Muar.
Local craftsmen adapted concept of labour division
from Taiwan which allows mass production of fur-
niture made from rubber wood.
2010s
Muar was awarded Asean Clean Tourist City Stan-
ndard Award 2017.
Royal Town of Johor title displayed at the entrance
of Sultan Ismail Bridge.
H I S T O R Y
The newer industrial district across the river (mainly microelectronics facto-
ries) shows that there is a market for skilled workers that are potential con-
sumers in Muar.
Before the bridge was built, Muar was a transit town
where people stay and rest before travelling further. To
take advantage of this, shophouses are built to provide
both commercial and residential purposes.
Due to the economic development, shophouses are often
converted for commercial purposes for both floors.
Shophouses are sometimes renovated to fulfill the own-
ersā€™ needs of increasing spaces. A new floor level may be
introduced to allow spaces for living while the other two
floors are used for commercial purposes.

seen at the site due to the lack of attraction and entertainment facilities at the site.

Jalan Maharani presents itself as an ā€˜Adaptiveā€™ community, a slow and peaceful town just along the river side. The site has
become a quiet place with not much happening due to lack of attarction and entertainment facilities.
All cinemas in Muar are no longer in existence as technology has killed their trade, but during those days when entertainment
in Muar town was rare, these cinemas played a significant role in providing Muarians the best entertainment they could yearn
for.
Since there isnā€™t much art or visual media entertainment left to promote or spark the interest of the younger generation, this
could be a great chance for the cultural innovation centre to play a big role in reviving Muarā€™s root of film art form.
In addition, the innovation in the old film making style helps attract the interest of the younger generation. It gives them a rea-
son to stay within Muarā€™s community and devolop it for the future, recreating a node to help restore Muarā€™s pride and to reinvent
itself as artistic industry to the extent of worldwide.
Usually the ā€˜BLACK BOXā€™ canā€™t be appreciate by the limited user experience, thus having the drive to create a building that helps
to offer a much more extensive experience of cinema.

Interactive 3D live digital projection in the room allows the visitors to experience the
advanced technology intergrating with the nature.
Stopmotion uses figurines to film, therefore acting skills are not needed in this field,
which opens up a lot of opportunity to the visitors to get involve in the progress of
stopmotion movie. An amazing hands-on experience for them to remember.
The workshop itself can only be access by specific user, where as the visitors can
have visual interaction with the artist inside.
All of the sculpture are made by the local artist in the workshop and transported
to the gallery with the plateau elevator. Visitors can see the artworks with different
prespective when they are at different level.
This amphitheater gradually sinks down to the basement from the ground floor, it
showcase some of the local creators short films, movies and trailers. Basically, it is
more of a gathering lobby for Muarā€™s community.
The green roof takes form of a giant stairs, it invites for a stroll to the top. This ab-
stract cascade of green forms a delightful background for film recording. Local film
maker or young creator can come to this public roof garden for their own project.

A total of 20 car parking lots, 2 service
parking, 2 handicap car parking and 9
motorcycle parking lots are provided in
the basement carpark.
Those intimate spaces are all located
at the basement of the building as well,
such as film production, movie theater,
the dark room and etc.
Ground floor is the public realm to
attarct the visitors by providing multi-
ple entrances, not to mention the dif-
ferent route available to the public, giv-
ing them a calm scenery along the Muar

Third floor consists of the figurine gal-

their work from the stopmotion work-
shop.
Second floor is more open to the visi-
tors, to maintain the transparency of
the building itself. Hence, there is a in-
door garden with seatings and projec-
tions to let the people enjoy the beauty
scenary of the river or the movie.

On the fifth floor, it is known as the goal
of the building where it is the exhibition
hall of the creators to show off their
outcome as in a documentory form and
also a interaction platform for the visi-
tors and creators. The spiral stairs and
the lifts on this level are accessible to
the rooftop garden.

The site lacks of urban shelter and therefore the building directly receives sunray drom sunrise and sunset throughout the day.
Furthermore, the concentrated activities of traffic and construction in surrounding creates an urban heat island and threatens
the thermal comfort of users in the site.

After studying the solar analysis, the solid facade extrude up to prevent direct sunlight penera-

The direction of wind flow in the site is most prominent from North East and South East. In order to achieve thermal comfort and
cool the internal temperature of the building while avoiding excessive intake of sunlight, through orientation and allocation of
openings had to be considered upon design process.

The stack effect within the monolithic structure of building was archieved with vertical voids or air-wells to enhance the ventilation of air within the building.
As the breeze of air flows in from the north east, with the help of orientation of inner structure, the air is lead to the central air well, rising up through the
change of temperature whereby the hot air gets replaced with newly flown cool air from outside again.

  • 4. The final Architectural Design Project is built on the theme ā€œSustaining Humanitiesā€, introducing Architecture for people, place and time. People experience architecture through the sense of place which is built over time. The nation of threading these three entities together through careful and site specific design, one must learn to understand the historical qualities of the site as well as its immediate environment, its identity and diversity of the community that inhabits the area. Concepts relating to sustainability are to be induced within the details of architectural considerations whilst applying suitable technologies for the design to be realized. Understanding the site context and the targeted user group is the key to designing site-specific architecture. With that in mind, site investigations are carried out as a group, both in a marco and micro scale to consider the positive impacts this pro- posed building might bring to the users. Targeted user groups are drawn out simultaneously with primary design intentions, along with planning of programmes to reply to this. A B S T R A C T i n t r o d u c t i o n
  • 5. I N T R O D U C T I O N The Culture and Innovation Centre will serve as the Muar Cityā€™s cultural landmark and public activity center. The project calls for a design that adhare to main criteria, appreciation of city/townā€™s and innovativeness; exhibit the ingenuity and craftmanship of the people and teach the visitors and the younger about what they need to know about the city. The cultural and innovation centre in order to adhare with the site, both tangible and intangible factors of the site area to be explored. From there, the programme and function of the cultural hub can be defined. In conjunction to that, the buildingā€™s performance, feasibility, sustainability, builldability are to be taken care of as well, to produce a legible design scheme. With the given brief, the building must not larger than 2000 sq.mts. and not lesser than 1800 sq.mts. built-in a minimum of 3 levels maximum 5 levels which inclued the covered circulation spaces. Basement parking does not count in floor area and level requirements. Fully open spaces, landscaping and others are not to be included in area calculation. i n t r o d u c t i o n P R O J E C T
  • 6. O B J E C T I V E S 01 To design spaces that will effectively to show case and promote the culture of Muar City. 02 To align design, which will create a positive impact to the immediate neighborhood, more engaging and inviting hance, encourge people to stay and explore. 03 To respect and positively affect site and neighboring places with it is highly engaging design. Where in designed public areas serves as a platform to engage people thru exhibition, workshop and other type of activities. 04 The architecture or the design can be iconic image to the city and a cultural landmark. 05 To incorporate an element of sustainability and green in design, educating people about the importance of healthy living and environment. Likewise as a representation of the cityā€™s credibility as the cleanest tourist city in Asean region. 06 Design should comply with pertinent guidelines and regulations. Compliance with buildability, safety and building require- ments. 07 Design that will incorporate new means of making cultural centers more relevent and enticing for locals of todayā€™s gener- ation and tourists who visit the country. i n t r o d u c t i o n

It is currently a R&R stop surrounding with Muar Municipal Council (MPM) at both sides and old shophouses at the opposite of the road. The site is granted with an excellent view towards the Muar River. s i t e i n v e s t i g a t i o n & c o n t e x t u a l s t u d i e s S I T E

The system helps manage the pepper and gambir plantations. 1830s 1940s After the World War II, Muar acted as an adminstra- tive town for the Japanese. Gambir leaves are used for leather tanning before chemicals replace its use. PEPPER PEPPER GAMBIR Rubber replaced gambir to become the most im- portant crop in Malaya by early 20th century. CURRENT RUBBER TAPPING METHOD 1990s Traffic infrastructure altered due to the bridge. Jalan Maharani redirected into a one-way road. Catalyst for change in the town of Muar, as the bridge allows easy access. Travellers can now head to their destination without stopping by Muar. Local craftsmen adapted concept of labour division from Taiwan which allows mass production of fur- niture made from rubber wood. 2010s Muar was awarded Asean Clean Tourist City Stan- ndard Award 2017. Royal Town of Johor title displayed at the entrance of Sultan Ismail Bridge. H I S T O R Y
  • 10. The newer industrial district across the river (mainly microelectronics facto- ries) shows that there is a market for skilled workers that are potential con- sumers in Muar. Before the bridge was built, Muar was a transit town where people stay and rest before travelling further. To take advantage of this, shophouses are built to provide both commercial and residential purposes. Due to the economic development, shophouses are often converted for commercial purposes for both floors. Shophouses are sometimes renovated to fulfill the own- ersā€™ needs of increasing spaces. A new floor level may be introduced to allow spaces for living while the other two floors are used for commercial purposes. 01 02 03 l a n d u s e M A R C O S T U D I E S s i t e i n v e s t i g a t i o n & c o n t e x t u a l s t u d i e s

  • 19. D E S I G N I N T E N T I O N Jalan Maharani presents itself as an ā€˜Adaptiveā€™ community, a slow and peaceful town just along the river side. The site has become a quiet place with not much happening due to lack of attarction and entertainment facilities. All cinemas in Muar are no longer in existence as technology has killed their trade, but during those days when entertainment in Muar town was rare, these cinemas played a significant role in providing Muarians the best entertainment they could yearn for. Since there isnā€™t much art or visual media entertainment left to promote or spark the interest of the younger generation, this could be a great chance for the cultural innovation centre to play a big role in reviving Muarā€™s root of film art form. In addition, the innovation in the old film making style helps attract the interest of the younger generation. It gives them a rea- son to stay within Muarā€™s community and devolop it for the future, recreating a node to help restore Muarā€™s pride and to reinvent itself as artistic industry to the extent of worldwide. Usually the ā€˜BLACK BOXā€™ canā€™t be appreciate by the limited user experience, thus having the drive to create a building that helps to offer a much more extensive experience of cinema. p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d & d e s i g n i n t e n t i o n

An amazing hands-on experience for them to remember. The workshop itself can only be access by specific user, where as the visitors can have visual interaction with the artist inside. All of the sculpture are made by the local artist in the workshop and transported to the gallery with the plateau elevator. Visitors can see the artworks with different prespective when they are at different level. This amphitheater gradually sinks down to the basement from the ground floor, it showcase some of the local creators short films, movies and trailers. Basically, it is more of a gathering lobby for Muarā€™s community. The green roof takes form of a giant stairs, it invites for a stroll to the top. This ab- stract cascade of green forms a delightful background for film recording. Local film maker or young creator can come to this public roof garden for their own project. p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d & d e s i g n i n t e n t i o n

Second floor is more open to the visi- tors, to maintain the transparency of the building itself. Hence, there is a in- door garden with seatings and projec- tions to let the people enjoy the beauty scenary of the river or the movie. 2F 3F The vintage cinema on this level is to give a chance for the younger genera- tion to experince the past. 4F On the fifth floor, it is known as the goal of the building where it is the exhibition hall of the creators to show off their outcome as in a documentory form and also a interaction platform for the visi- tors and creators. The spiral stairs and the lifts on this level are accessible to the rooftop garden. 5F p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d & d e s i g n i n t e n t i o n

In order to achieve thermal comfort and cool the internal temperature of the building while avoiding excessive intake of sunlight, through orientation and allocation of openings had to be considered upon design process.
