What immunizations should I receive?
• Flu vaccine each fall or winter can prevent many types of flu and reduce your chances of
developing pneumonia.
• Immunizations for pneumococcal pneumonia, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B are recommended
for all individuals who may be at risk because you have a chronic condition.
• Keep up-to-date on tetanus (lockjaw) and diphtheria immunizations with a booster shot
every 10 years.
• Finally, many dangerous childhood diseases such as: measles, mumps, rubella (German
measles), pertussis (whooping cough), chickenpox, hepatitis B, polio, tetanus (lockjaw), and
Haemophilus influenza type b may cause illness, permanent disability, or death and are often
far more serious in adults.
Where can I receive immunizations?
• Your physician or primary care provider will be able to give you the immunizations that you
require based on your age, risk factors, and previous illnesses.
• Many work sites now offer more common immunizations such as the flu shot.
Why is immunization so important?
• Immunization allows you to avoid diseases that cause serious illness, disability or death.
• Influenza and pneumococcal disease cause cold and flu-like symptoms that may result in
discomfort and absence from work. They may also cause pneumonia or more serious illness
that can lead to death.
• Childhood diseases such as measles, mumps, and chickenpox often cause illnesses that are far
more serious in adults.
