2. Experiment
• 600 infants from the moment they are born until they
reach the age of 18 will begin their treatments. Instead
of drinking normal beverages, they will only be
permitted to drink regular coffee, decaffeinated coffee,
or any beverage except coffee. Their parents would also
log how much of the designated beverage they drank
every single day of their life until the child turns 18. All
subjects would receive the same kind of coffee or
decaffeinated coffee.
4. Will Blocking Be Used?
• There will be two blocks of the infants- male
and female. This will eliminate the lurking
variable of gender.
5. How is the sample representative?
• The sample is representative because one can
only test if coffee stunts your growth on a
subject who is not yet fully grown.
• We would select 300 males and 300 females
randomly on any given day from hospitals in
the state of Pennsylvania.
7. Variables Measured and Compared
• Total height
• Height gained per year
• Amount of beverage(s) consumed
8. Experimental Concepts
• We would use things such as control groups,
placebos, and blinding.
• The people who were free to drink beverages
as they please would be the control group.
• The placebo would be the decaffeinated
coffee.
• The people who received coffee or
decaffeinated coffee would be blinded.
9. Randomization
• First, we would assign every male infant a
number 1-300. Then we would assign every
female infant a number 1-300. We would then
create two slips of paper for each number
between 1-300. We would put the first group
of 300 slips in one bag, and the second group
of 300 slips in another. We would then select
100 slips from each bag, and each set of 200
would be assigned to one of the 3 treatments.
