Do Carrots Affect Vision?
Dr. Fay, Mr. Comber
Subjects/Experimental Units
Participants in the sample (see sample)
Sampling Design
In each state, men and women will be separated into
homogenous groups. Randomly, 50 members of each
gender will be selected from each state. If someone
refuses to participate, then another individual will be
randomly selected of the same gender. In total, there will
be 2500 men and 2500 women. From here, the men and
women are randomly assigned to either the control group
or the experimental group.
Explanatory Variable
Amount of carrots in the designed diet
(quantitative)
Treatment
In the experimental group, the diet that
participants will indulge in will have 1 cup of
carrots a day in addition to the other aspects of
the diet.
Response Variable
Vision/eyesight (quantitative)
Experiment
The individuals will receive a check-up at the doctor’s office where they will
partake in an eye exam in addition to other irrelevant tests. This will occur
before the “diet.” Then, the individuals will be randomly separated into two
equally sized groups with equal representation of each gender in each group.
This will be done by compiling an alphabetical list and assigning numbers
0001-2500 to each name of each gender. Using technology, while ignoring
repeats, 1250 names will be picked per gender. These participants will be a
part of the experimental group. Those who were not picked will be a part of the
control group. One of the two groups will be assigned a meal plan with
breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks provided; however, it will not contain
carrots. The other group will be assigned an identical meal plan; the only
difference being that 2 cups of carrots will be added per day. The two groups
will undergo the diet for 30 days. After the diet the individuals will have a
doctor’s visit again where their vision will be tested to see if there is a change
from the initial eye test.
Principles
● Control
o A control group is used, the diet without carrots
● Randomization
o Participants are randomly assigned to either the
experimental group or the control group
● Replication
o The experiment can be repeated in a manner that is
essentially the same
Blocking (Randomized)
The population is separated into homogenous
groups (male and female) and then randomly
assigned to the control or experimental group.
Blinding
Participants will be told that this is a new weight
loss diet. They will have no knowledge about
what the real purpose of the experiment is.
Concerns
-People will not abide by the diet fully
