2. Experimental Units: Volunteers with
coughs gathered at a doctors office
Explanatory Variable: Categorical- Honey
Treatment: No honey, Placebo honey, Real honey
Response Variable: If their cough is cured or not after one week. The
response variable would be categorical as no value is measured.

4. Principles of Experimental Design
Control
Control group- the 30
people who don’t get
honey
Randomization
Gather 90 people with coughs,
write their names on slips of
paper, put in a hat and shake,
the first 30 names selected will
be assigned to the No Honey
group, the next 30 selected will
be in the Placebo Honey group,
the remaining people will be
placed in the Real Honey
group.
Replication
Repeat experiment on
different subjects in order
to quantify variation. This
experiment could be
repeated in multiple states
in the US to reduce
variation in the response
variables.
5. Blocking
Blocking is not used in
this experiment.
Blinding
Blinding is used on the
experimental units by not
telling them which
treatment they are assigned
to. The evaluators would
also be not aware of which
units got which treatment.
Concerns
One concern is that the
subjects do not undergo all
three treatments so their
response variables cannot
be compared for an
individual subject.
Statistical Analysis
The proportion of subjects that coughs were cured would be analyzed.
