Population Density in Canada
Directions: Follow the instructions below and use your textbook and an atlas to answer the questions.

1. Use page 149 in the textbook and a Population Density Map of Canada to create population density maps for
each country.
                                                  Population
Canada 0-5 United States
                                                                       5-50
                                                                     50-100
                                                                    100-250
                                                                   Over 250

*Don’t forget to fill in your key!

2. What are two differences you see between the populations of the United States and Canada?
      -

       -

3. What is one similarity you see between the populations of the United States and Canada?
      -

4. Why do most people in Canada choose to live near the U.S. border?

5. Use your population map and the Economic Activity map on page 161 in the textbook. How does population
density affect land use in the northern areas of Canada?

6. Use the Data Bits information located on pages 117 and 179 of the textbook. Usually the better a country’s
standard of living, the more luxuries citizens of that country can afford.
    • What conclusion can be made about the standard of living in Mexico compared to the standard of living
       in Canada?

   • How would you compare the standard of living in Canada to the standard of living in the United States?

7. On page 161 of the textbook look at the Economic Activity Map of Canada. How would you summarize
Canada’s natural resources?
8. Look as the Population Chart on page 117 of the textbook. Why do you think more people are likely to live in
urban areas as opposed to rural areas?

9. Use the pie graph on page 121 of the textbook. What ethnic group makes up the largest percentage of
Canada’s population?

10. Compare the populations of the Canada, the United States, and Mexico by creating a graph like the one on
page 121 of the textbook.

United States – 291,500,000

Canada – 31,600,000

                                                                                               = 50,000,000
Mexico – 104,900,000

11. Using the information in the chart below, answer the questions to compare the level of development of Latin
American countries with that of Canada and the United States.
                                        Population Working in Agriculture
Country Percentage of Population GNP per Capita
                                            Working in Agriculture
                     Canada 2% $19,640
                      Cuba 20% $1,650
                     Mexico 18% $3,700
United States (1900) 23% Figures not available
               United States (2008) 0.6% $29, 080

   a. Does having a higher percentage of people working in agriculture mean a country has a higher or lower
      standard of living? Why?

   b. Does this information help explain the similarities between standard of living in the United States and
      Canada? Why?
