1. Negative numbers are
numbers that are
less than zero.
We write a minus sign in
front of the digits to show
that they are negative.
2. Looking at number lines can help us
to understand negative numbers.

Lower numbers are on
the left and higher
numbers are on the right.
5 is higher than -7
-1 is higher than -9
Is -8 higher or lower than 7?
Is 14 higher or lower than -15?
3. We use negative
numbers in many
different ways.
The temperature
is -7oC.
It’s VERY cold!
My bank balance is -£100.
I owe the bank 100 pounds!
The coordinates of the
green circle are (-6, 4).
Level -3 is three
floors below
ground floor.
4. When you are solving negative number problems
with a calculator, look for the +/- key.
Let’s work out -5 + 7
using a calculator.
