The mouth is an organ that breaks down large food particles into smaller pieces using enzymes so that food can be easily digested as it moves down the esophagus. It contains enzymes that break down carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, sugars, amino acids, glucose and fatty acids in the food. Starch from food is also extracted and sent to the stomach. The mouth is adapted for its function of breaking down food through the use of enzymes that break large molecules into smaller pieces for digestion.
