Getting to Know Literacy Learners 
• Cognitive 
• Reading inventories 
• Find each child’s instructional reading level 
• Evaluate accuracy, self correction rate, comprehension, and fluency 
• In Reading Inventories, Dr. Peter Afflerbach mentions the 
importance of using reading inventories to guide instruction 
(Laureate Education Inc., 2010) 
• Afflerbach suggests that teachers note miscues and evaluate 
whether or not students are reading for meaning (Laureate 
Education Inc., 2010)
Getting to Know Literacy Learners 
• Non-cognitive 
• Interest inventory 
• Select texts of interest in order to motivate students/reach all learners 
• Consider background knowledge/experiences 
• Select texts that relate to child’s own life/experiences 
In Getting to Know Students, Dr. Janice Almasi mentions that 
educators must find out about the whole child, including their 
interests, motivations and background knowledge (Laureate 
Education Inc., 2010)
Selecting Texts 
• Informational/semiotic text 
• Include more non-fiction text to prepare students for upper grades 
and the adulthood 
• Incorporate more texts with graphs, charts, and icons 
• Avoid 4th grade slump 
• According to Susan Neuman in Informational Text in the Early Years, 
early childhood educators must expose students to more expository text 
so they know how to read and understand it. Otherwise, students will 
struggle when making the switch from learning to read to reading to 
learn (Laureate Education Inc., 2010) 
• Neuman suggests teaching reading for the purpose of learning 
(Laureate Education Inc., 2010)
Interactive Perspective 
• Metacognition 
• Teach students how to use appropriate reading strategies and self 
regulate while reading 
• In Interactive Perspective: Strategic Processing, Dr. Janet Almasi 
explains metacognition as being aware of how to attack a text and 
knowing which strategies to use while solving unknown words 
(Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

• Critical Thinking 
• Author’s purpose 
• Fiction vs Nonfiction 
• In Critical Perspective, Dr. Janice Almasi encourages educators to 
teach students how to examine the believability/credibility of a text 
as well as the author’s purpose/perspective (Laureate Education 
Inc., 2010)

• Meaningful responses 
• Include written responses 
• In Response Perspective-Reading-Writing Connection, Dr. Richard 
Vacca mentions that reading and writing reinforce each other 
(Laureate Education Inc., 2010) 
• Vacca also mentions that writing helps you construct knowledge 
and build connections (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

Getting to Know Literacy Learners • Cognitive • Reading inventories • Find each child’s instructional reading level • Evaluate accuracy, self correction rate, comprehension, and fluency • In Reading Inventories, Dr. Peter Afflerbach mentions the importance of using reading inventories to guide instruction (Laureate Education Inc., 2010) • Afflerbach suggests that teachers note miscues and evaluate whether or not students are reading for meaning (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

Getting to Know Literacy Learners • Non-cognitive • Interest inventory • Select texts of interest in order to motivate students/reach all learners • Consider background knowledge/experiences • Select texts that relate to child’s own life/experiences In Getting to Know Students, Dr. Janice Almasi mentions that educators must find out about the whole child, including their interests, motivations and background knowledge (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

Selecting Texts • Informational/semiotic text • Include more non-fiction text to prepare students for upper grades and the adulthood • Incorporate more texts with graphs, charts, and icons • Avoid 4th grade slump • According to Susan Neuman in Informational Text in the Early Years, early childhood educators must expose students to more expository text so they know how to read and understand it. Otherwise, students will struggle when making the switch from learning to read to reading to learn (Laureate Education Inc., 2010) • Neuman suggests teaching reading for the purpose of learning (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

Interactive Perspective • Metacognition • Teach students how to use appropriate reading strategies and self regulate while reading • In Interactive Perspective: Strategic Processing, Dr. Janet Almasi explains metacognition as being aware of how to attack a text and knowing which strategies to use while solving unknown words (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

Critical Perspective • Critical Thinking • Author’s purpose • Fiction vs Nonfiction • In Critical Perspective, Dr. Janice Almasi encourages educators to teach students how to examine the believability/credibility of a text as well as the author’s purpose/perspective (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)

Response Perspective • Meaningful responses • Include written responses • In Response Perspective-Reading-Writing Connection, Dr. Richard Vacca mentions that reading and writing reinforce each other (Laureate Education Inc., 2010) • Vacca also mentions that writing helps you construct knowledge and build connections (Laureate Education Inc., 2010)
