3.  The UK construction industry is plagued with
some severe problems (Cheok et al
2001;Green et al 2004)
 First call for change 1944 - since then Egan
report & Latham reports.
 “Never Waste a good crisis” 2009-Highlighted
that industry has responded inadequately to
call of change.
 Since then BIM has been mentioned in the
new Construction Strategy on 31 May 2011.

4. Why BIM matters?
The BIM mandate:
 “Vision 2016: All public sector projects of over £ 5 million
to be procured through Full collaborative BIM (Level 2)”.
 The public sector has a potentially powerful lever with which
to change behaviour within its suppliers.
What power does the public sector has?
 Public sector-Accounts for 37.83% of construction
outputs.(ONS 2012)
 62.1% of public sector projects is over 5 million GBP(ONS
2012).
 Knock on effect on private sector clients.

5.  Implementing BIM effectively requires significant
changes in the way construction businesses
work.
 In Finland, most organisations reported that BIM
implementation not only requires learning new
software applications, but also requires
reinventing the workflow, train staff and assign
new responsibilities and thus is more about
people and process change.
 BIM implementation is much more about people
and process than technology. (Wilkinson
2012;Arayici 2011)

6. The challenging reality is………
 BIM level 2 will be required by public sector from 2016 on
projects over £ 5 million.
 BIM will require fundamental changes for organisations.
 Change is more about people and process than just
technology .
 People within construction organisations have been very much
resistant to call of change although it is for the betterment.

 Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the reality of practice by
understanding how people in a construction organisation
respond to the„ content of change that BIM will involve.
